Chapter 54 - Unusual mission

One week later.

It was morning.

Jace was sitting at his desk in his bedroom.

On the desk sat an old-school typewriter—well, it was old-school for Jace, who had once lived in an era where people typed on smartphones, slim laptops, or computer keyboards.

In this world, however, this typewriter was considered one of the best inventions ever.

'Tak, tak, tak, chichak, tak, tak.'

Jace had to admit, sometimes the sound of typing was quite satisfying, but most of the time, it was annoying; he had even considered stuffing his ears with cotton.

After he ended whatever relationship he had with with Jane, everything went back to normal, though he still felt quite sad about it.

Since transmigrating to this world, Jace had been alone, and he had even spiraled into depression; knowing Jane was there for him had given him a sliver of peace, but now, he was truly on his own.

He had hoped to have a good relationship with Catherine, but that had turned out completely different from what he imagined.

'I was naive,' he thought. 'Well, no matter. It all turned out for the best.'

Now that he didn't have any emotional ties with anyone, he was free from those burdens—free from his limitations.

Yet, a lingering sadness remained within heart.

In the last week, he had focused on visiting different places and schools to act as a Magician.

Other than that, he went on a couple of missions with Natalie, but they were similar to the first one, leaving him quite disappointed.

Boredom crept up on him again, so he decided to do what every other transmigrator would do in another world—inspired by the novels he had read in his previous life and the living example of Emperor Roselle Gustav:

Piracy.

That was what he was doing. He was writing "The Godfather: Part I" from memory on his typewriter.

Naturally, he was tweaking it a bit to adjust the story to this world. As a Seer, his memory was exceptional, and he could just enter cogitation and dream-divine his own memories, making it quite easy.

He was doing it purely for his own amusement—he already had plenty of money—but he was curious to see how the people of this world would react to it.

Though, he realized, writing a book rather than a movie was a different factor entirely.

Nonetheless, he continued writing, following the patterns he had read in other great novels to increase the immersiveness.

'Tak, tak, tak, click, tak—?'

Jace stopped. He stood up just as he heard a knock at the door.

'Knock, knock.'

He walked to the door and opened it.

Natalie stood before him in her usual professional attire.

Jace sighed inwardly; 'I swear, if this is going to be another search-and-capture mission, I'm going to quit working for Catherine.' he mused.

Natalie walked into the living room without an invitation while Jace still stood at the door.

After hanging out for a few days, they had grown somewhat familiar with each other.

While making herself comfortable on the couch, Natalie said, "Get ready. We are leaving."

Jace walked in front of her. "Don't tell me it's another search-and-capture mission," he asked with a slightly annoyed expression.

Natalie looked at him for a moment. "No, today it's different," she said with her usual stoicism.

Jace considered rejecting the mission anyway, but decided otherwise. 'It's not like I have anything better to do.'

With that, he walked to his bedroom.

Natalie meanwhile pulled out a cigarette box, but before she could open it, she heard Jace's voice.

"No smoking in my house!" he shouted from his room.

Natalie sighed in disappointment and tucked the box back into her inner pocket. Her lover, Sarah, didn't allow her to smoke in the house either.

A few minutes later, Jace emerged from his room, dressed in his Magician attire.

Natalie stood up and made her way out of the apartment; Jace followed her.

On the way down, Jace asked, "So, what are we doing today?"

"In the carriage," Natalie said as she continued walking.

A few moments later, they stepped into the carriage. It started moving as soon as they were inside.

Jace was surprised to find that there was already someone else seated in the carriage: a middle-aged man with a long face and average features. He was half a head taller than Jace, and his attire was somewhat similar aswell.

Jace secretly turned on his Spirit Vision to get a look at the man. His spirituality was strong, his body was fit, and his mind was calm.

He figured the man was a sequence 8, but the question of 'which pathway?' remained.....-'wait a minute'

Now that Jace looked closely, there were pair of pupil-less white eyes behind him!.

He was surprised, the man was from 'Mystery Prayer' pathway, seeing that he was a sequence 8 he figured the guy was a 'Melee Scholar'

In backlund Jace didn't have much luck in encountering beyonders from different pathways, except- Arbiter, Lawyer, hunter and one spectator, so he was surprised to meet a guy from different pathway for once

Nevertheless he didn't let his curiosity get mixed with his professionalism.

Jace removed his hat as he sat beside the man and introduced himself. "Hello, I am Jace," he said.

The man smiled and nodded. "Hello Jace, nice to meet you. I am Ivan Homer," he introduced.

"Pleasure to meet you as well, Mr. Homer," Jace said as he made himself comfortable on the seat.

He looked across at Natalie, who was seated opposite them.

Natalie turned her head toward Ivan Homer and gave a slight nod.

Homer pulled a leather bag from his side, opened it on his lap, pulled out a small stack of documents, and passed them to Jace.

Jace took the papers with a slightly confused look, but the confusion disappeared as he started reading.

'Ooh? Interesting.' After reading the papers, he looked up at Natalie, who was watching him.

But it was Homer who spoke.

"This is not a commission from Madam Catherine or MI9. The bounty came from a private source.

I've been investigating the target for about two weeks now. Two thousand pounds for killing the target and delivering the Beyonder characteristic," Homer concluded.

Silence descended upon the carriage. There was no sound other than the carriage wheels rolling over the cobblestones.

Eventually, the carriage halted. Homer got up, greeted them with a farewell, and stepped out. The carriage moved again.

Jace, who had been reading the papers again, looked up at Natalie, who was staring out the window with a calm expression.

"So, we are going to kill a Sequence 7 Psychiatrist who is also a psychopath?" Jace asked, one eyebrow raised.

Natalie shrugged. "That pretty much covers it," she said.
