Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Shadows in the Hallway

Chapter 9: Shadows in the Hallway

The afternoon bell rang.

The hallways erupted into motion—students shuffling, lockers slamming, laughter echoing off the walls. The chaos was familiar to Tae Kook, but today, it seemed louder, sharper.

He walked quietly, hands in his pockets, keeping his eyes ahead. Not on anyone, not yet. But his attention inevitably drifted toward her.

Han Soo Min.

She moved with calm precision through the crowd, small steps, careful glances—not once bumping into anyone. Every movement measured, deliberate, almost… effortless. Tae Kook couldn't help but notice.

"…Impossible," he muttered under his breath.

"KOOKY!"

Predictably, Yoo Min Ho was beside him in an instant, voice booming over the hallway noise.

"Come on, man! Don't just walk silently like some shadow. You're gonna miss your chance!"

"…I'm not missing anything," Tae Kook said flatly. His eyes stayed on Soo Min, who was ahead, passing by the library doors.

Min Ho snorted. "Uh-huh. Sure. You're definitely not going to stare awkwardly at her all day. Totally normal."

Tae Kook didn't answer. He didn't need to.

Behind a locker, Ae Rin crouched, notebook in hand, scribbling like a tiny whirlwind.

"…Observation 83: Yoo Min Ho remains human chaos," she whispered. "…Observation 84: Kooky has lost all internal calm. Observation 85: Soo Min walks like a queen." She grinned mischievously.

Han Soo Min paused near a wall, reaching into her bag. Tae Kook slowed his pace, keeping just enough distance to appear casual.

Min Ho noticed immediately.

"Ahhhh! Perfect!" he whispered loudly, nudging Tae Kook. "Now's your chance! Just say… anything!"

"…Do not—" Tae Kook's words were cut off as Soo Min pulled out a notebook of her own. She flipped a page carefully, writing something silently. Then she glanced around, seemingly aware of everything, yet doing nothing to acknowledge him.

Tae Kook's mind raced.

"…She's writing something… about what? Observation? Notes? Or… nothing at all?" He tightened his grip on his bag. "…Dangerous. Definitely dangerous."

Min Ho whispered from beside him:

"Say something, Kooky! You've been following her like a secret agent for three days. It's time! Just—hi! Wave! Smile! Or I'll do it for you."

Tae Kook narrowed his eyes. "…Do not—"

But Min Ho had already stepped forward, pretending to bump into her slightly.

"Oh! Sorry, Soo Min! Didn't see you there!" Min Ho laughed, far too loudly. "Kooky here wanted to… um… say hi too!"

Soo Min didn't flinch. She looked at Tae Kook calmly.

"…Kim Tae Kook," she said softly.

"…Han Soo Min," he replied quietly, tone neutral.

No anger. No teasing. Just… acknowledgment.

Min Ho threw up his hands dramatically.

"YES! He finally talked! Well, not really, but hey, progress!"

Tae Kook muttered under his breath, annoyed. "…He's impossible."

Soo Min closed her notebook, tucked it neatly into her bag, and tilted her head slightly. "…Are you always this… quiet?"

Tae Kook blinked. "…Mostly."

"…Mostly?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

"…Sometimes," he admitted, almost reluctantly.

A pause stretched between them. Not awkward. Not tense. Just… quiet.

From behind the lockers, Ae Rin whispered, barely containing herself:

"…Observation 86: Kooky just admitted something. Observation 87: She's noticing. Observation 88: This is going very well… and dangerously so."

Min Ho whispered beside Tae Kook, grinning:

"You know… if you just asked her to lunch, you'd be golden. Maybe even heroic."

Tae Kook didn't answer. He only glanced at Soo Min again. Something in her calm, observant eyes had unsettled him in a way he didn't expect.

"…Not heroic," he muttered. "…Dangerous. Definitely dangerous."

Soo Min looked down at her shoes for a moment. Then, without looking up, she said softly:

"…You seem… different from others."

Tae Kook froze slightly. "…Different how?"

"…I don't know," she said, calmly, still quiet. "Just… you notice things. You… observe. But you don't reveal. You hide."

Tae Kook's chest tightened. A strange thrill ran through him.

"…You're observant," he finally said. "…Dangerous too."

Soo Min glanced up briefly, then returned to her notebook.

Min Ho groaned. "Aww, this is perfect. Look at him—speechless! I've never seen Kooky like this!"

Tae Kook gave him a sharp look. "…Shut up."

Ae Rin scribbled furiously one last time:

"…Observation 89: Kooky's secret life has just bumped into something else. Observation 90: Danger level—extremely high. Observation 91: Soo Min… intrigues him."

The bell rang, signaling the end of the break.

Students moved quickly, returning to class. Tae Kook took a slow step back, maintaining distance, careful, calculating.

But his eyes remained on Han Soo Min as she walked ahead, calm, precise, completely unaware of—or completely indifferent to—how much she had just disrupted his carefully controlled world.

And for the first time, Tae Kook realized something: some mysteries were worth getting involved in.
