Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Project Proximity

Chapter 15: Project Proximity

The afternoon sun filtered through the classroom windows as Tae Kook sat at his desk, bag still slung lazily over one shoulder. His notebook was open, but his mind wasn't on the assignment.

"…Focus, Kooky," he muttered under his breath. "…Lab work first. School projects later."

Yet, across the room, Han Soo Min quietly prepared her materials for the new project the teacher had assigned. She arranged her pens, papers, and books with precise care, her calm composure as unsettling as it was fascinating.

Tae Kook's eyes followed every small movement.

"…Why does she make everything so precise?" he whispered. "…Impossible."

Suddenly, Yoo Min Ho leaned over his shoulder, grinning like he had discovered a treasure.

"Oi! You're staring again! Today's project pairs are… oh, look at that! Kooky and Soo Min!"

Tae Kook groaned softly. "…Yes. I know."

Min Ho's eyes twinkled. "Perfect. Time for controlled genius to meet… observational genius. Chaos incoming!"

From behind a corner, Ae Rin crouched, notebook in hand.

"…Observation 160: Project proximity achieved. Observation 161: Kooky fluster level increasing. Observation 162: Soo Min calm as ever. Dangerous."

She scribbled furiously.

When the teacher called their names, Tae Kook slowly rose, maintaining a calm exterior, and walked toward Soo Min's desk.

"…Kim Tae Kook," she said softly, looking up at him.

"…Han Soo Min," he replied quietly.

No words. Just awareness.

As they began to work together, Tae Kook noticed something different. The project involved analyzing patterns in small mechanical devices—a topic strangely reminiscent of his lab work at home.

"…Interesting," he muttered quietly. "…Not too different from home experiments."

Soo Min glanced at him. "…You seem… familiar with this," she said softly.

"…I have some… experience," he replied, careful to sound casual. "…Nothing special."

Min Ho, lounging nearby, whispered theatrically: "Oooh! Did you hear that? She noticed! Kooky can't hide it anymore!"

"…Shut up," Tae Kook muttered, focusing on the small gears and patterns before him.

Ae Rin scribbled from behind a stack of chairs. "…Observation 163: Kooky internally panicking. Observation 164: Secret lab skills almost revealed. Observation 165: Chaos potential—high."

As they worked side by side, Tae Kook realized how naturally they complemented each other. Her calm observation balanced his calculated movements. He didn't have to speak much; a single glance, a subtle nod, and the work flowed seamlessly.

"…Efficient," he muttered softly. "…Dangerously efficient."

Soo Min looked up briefly. "…You notice everything, but you hide it well," she said calmly.

Tae Kook blinked. "…Yes," he replied softly. "…Careful is… safer."

Min Ho leaned closer, smirking. "Careful, huh? More like flustered genius. Admit it, man. She's got you."

"…I am… not," Tae Kook muttered under his breath, though his fingers fumbled slightly as he adjusted a tiny gear.

Ae Rin whispered excitedly: "…Observation 166: Kooky flustered despite control. Observation 167: Hands trembling slightly. Observation 168: Human chaos confirmed."

For a brief moment, they worked in complete silence. Tae Kook's mind, usually filled with calculations and formulas, now found itself distracted by the faint rhythm of Soo Min's breathing, the subtle movements of her pen, the quiet intensity in her eyes.

"…Focus," he muttered under his breath. "…Not her. Project."

Yet, every glance, every small motion carried weight. Every quiet exchange was… meaningful.

The bell rang, signaling the end of the period. Tae Kook carefully closed his notebook, sliding it into his bag. Soo Min packed her things with the same calm precision.

"…We'll continue tomorrow?" she asked softly, glancing at him.

"…Yes. Tomorrow," he replied quietly, voice low but certain.

Min Ho clapped slowly from his desk. "Bravo! Round two of interactions complete. Survived without fainting. Impressive."

"…Annoying," Tae Kook muttered under his breath.

Ae Rin scribbled her final note for the day:

"…Observation 169: Kooky's controlled life disrupted by proximity and skill overlap. Observation 170: Soo Min's influence expanding steadily. Observation 171: Chaos and curiosity guaranteed. Future developments unpredictable."

As Tae Kook walked out of the classroom, backpack slung over one shoulder, he realized quietly that some projects weren't about mechanics or patterns.

Some projects… were about people.

And this one… was already more complicated than he had expected.
