Chapter 1 - Divorce on Our Anniversary

Amelia's POV

"Sign it." He muttered icily.

Daniel's voice was cold. Flat. Unfamiliar.

The divorce papers slid across the table and stopped right in front of me.

For a second, I didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Didn't think.

I just stared at the document like my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.

Divorce Agreement.

The words blurred.

A sharp ringing filled my ears.

This… had to be a joke.

Right?

I slowly lifted my head and looked at the man sitting across from me.

My husband.

Daniel Carter.

But the man in front of me didn't look like the one I knew.

His eyes were distant. Detached.

As if I meant nothing to him anymore.

Just minutes ago, I had walked into this restaurant with a small smile on my face.

Five minutes late.

The waiter had led me to this same table by the window.

The same table.

Three years ago, Daniel had proposed to me here. I could still remember it so clearly.

The way his hands trembled slightly as he held the ring. His voice softened when he said…

"Amelia… I can't promise you wealth right now. But I promise I'll work hard so you never regret choosing me."

Back then, his eyes were warm.

Back then… I believed him.

My fingers tightened slightly around my bag.

Inside it was the gift I had prepared for him.

A simple silver watch and a silver bracelet.

I had spent weeks saving for it. Because today was special.

Our third wedding anniversary.

I wanted it to be perfect and lovely.

But now…

I looked at the papers again.

My chest tightened.

"Daniel…" My voice came out barely above a whisper. "What is this?"

Even as I asked, I already knew. I just did not want to believe it.

He leaned back in his chair, completely unaffected.

"It's exactly what you think it is."

His tone was indifferent. Like we were discussing business.

Not ending a marriage.

My fingers trembled slightly as I picked up the document.

The paper felt heavier than it should.

"Is this… a joke?" I forced a small smile.

A weak one.

A desperate one.

The painful smile.

But Daniel didn't smile. He did not react either.

Didn't even look guilty.

Instead, he turned his head towards the entrance.

And for the first time since I arrived…

His eyes sparkled.

Similar to the first day he met me.

That was when my heart dropped.

I followed his line of sight.

And I saw her.

A woman walked toward us with slow, confident steps. Her heels clicked softly against the floor.

Her posture was elegant. Her smile bright.

She is Beautiful.

Too beautiful.

She stopped beside Daniel like she belonged there.

Like she had always belonged there.

Then she gently placed her hand on his shoulder.

And Daniel didn't move it away.

My stomach twisted painfully.

"This is Sophia," Daniel said calmly.

His voice carried no hesitation.

No shame.

No guilt and fear.

Then he added—

"And she's carrying my child."

The world stopped completely .

Only the loud pounding of my heart.

My grip on the paper tightened.

"Your… child?"

The words felt foreign in my mouth.

Sophia smiled at me.

Soft.

Polite.

Almost… kind.

"Hello, Amelia."

I couldn't breathe.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The distance.

The late nights.

Avoiding my flirting.

The coldness.

The way he stopped looking at me the same way. It all led to this moment.

"So…" My voice trembled despite my effort to stay calm. "This is why?"

Daniel sighed like he was already tired of the conversation.

"Amelia, let's not make this difficult."

"Difficult you say?"

A hollow laugh almost escaped my lips.

My fingers curled into my palm.

"Daniel… today is our anniversary."

We are family.

"I know."

Two simple words.

Spoken without emotion.

They cut deeper than anything else.

Sophia let out a small laugh.

"Oh? You didn't tell me that."

Daniel didn't respond.

Didn't even look at her.

His attention remained on me.

Cold. Detached.

"You should sign the papers," he said. "I'll compensate you generously."

Compensate me.

As if three years of my life could be reduced to a number.

As if everything I gave… meant nothing.

My vision blurred slightly.

But I refused to cry.

Not here.

Not in front of him.

"Three years…" I whispered.

My throat tightened.

"When you had nothing… I stayed."

Images flashed through my mind.

The tiny apartment.

The sleepless nights.

The pain.

"I was there when your company was failing."

"I believed in you when no one else did."

My voice cracked slightly.

"I never left you."

Where have I gone wrong?

Daniel's expression didn't change.

Not even a little.

"But now…" I continued, my chest aching, "now that you have everything…"

I swallowed hard.

"I'm no longer needed?"

Silence.

Heavy.

Suffocating.

Sophia leaned slightly closer to him.

"Daniel," she said softly, "we shouldn't keep her waiting."

Her tone was gentle.

But her words felt like a final push.

I looked down at the papers again.

The ink blurred through my tears.

This was it.

There was nothing left to hold onto.

No explanation.

No apology.

No hesitation.

Just an ending.

Slowly, I reached for the pen.

My hand trembled slightly.

If he wanted to walk away so badly…

Then I wouldn't beg him to stay.

I wouldn't humiliate myself.

Not anymore.

I signed my name.

Amelia Carter.

The ink dried almost instantly.

Just like that—

Three years of marriage ended with a single stroke.

I placed the pen down gently.

My chest felt hollow.

Empty.

But somehow… calm.

I stood up.

Neither of them stopped me.

Not Daniel.

Not Sophia.

And that hurt more than anything else.

I picked up my bag.

The gift inside suddenly felt meaningless.

But I still dropped it on the table.

Then I looked at Daniel one last time.

He didn't look at me.

Not even once.

A small, bitter smile touched my lips.

"Don't worry," I said softly.

"My leaving won't make your life difficult."

Then I turned and walked away.

Each step felt heavy.

But I didn't stop.

I didn't look back.

Because if I did…

I might break.

And I refused to let him see that.

Not anymore.

But Daniel Carter didn't know this.

The woman he discarded so easily tonight…

Would soon become someone he could never reach again.

No matter how much he tried.
