Chapter 1 - Divorce on Our Anniversary

Amelia's POV

I arrived at the restaurant five minutes late.

The waiter guided me to the window table where Daniel was sitting.

I remembered the first time we came here three years ago. Daniel had just proposed to me that night. He looked nervous as he held the ring box in his hand.

"Amelia" he said softly, "I can't promise you wealth right now, but the world is yours. I will work hard so you never regret choosing me.

Back then, his eyes were full of warmth,

Back then, I believed every word he said.

I smiled faintly at the memory.

My fingers touched the small anniversary gift I had prepared for him inside my bag.

It was a simple silver watch.

I had spent weeks saving for it because I wanted tonight to be so special.

But as I looked at Daniel, the excitement in my chest slowly turned into unease.

Daniel was never this quiet, especially not today our anniversary.

I should've known that something was wrong the moment Daniel asked me to meet him at the restaurant.

Our anniversary restaurant.

The same place where he once held my hand across the table and promised me the world and we would grow old together.

But tonight his eyes were cold,

colder than I had ever seen before.

I sat across from him, nervously twisting the napkin in my hands.

"Daniel, did something happen at the company today?" I asked softly.

 But he didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he pushed a document across the table.

The white paper slid slowly toward me.

 My heart skipped a beat.

"Sign it." He muttered icily.

I frowned and picked it up, curious and afraid.

The moment my eyes landed on the bold title at the top, my breath itched .

Divorce Agreement.

My fingers began to tremble.

"Daniel...What exactly is this?" My voice came out barely above a whisper.

I knew what it was, but I don't think he was in his right senses.

He leaned back in his chair, his expression emotionless.

"It's exactly what you think it is."

His sentence followed my whispers inside my head; echoes of his past promises. The world around me went silent. I could only hear the loud pounding of my heart.

Not even the music in the restaurant.

Or the sound of people talking around us.

"Is this….a joke?" I forced out a smile.

but Daniel didn't smile or laugh.

Instead, he turned his head towards the entrance his eyes sparkled.

That was when I saw her.

A beautiful woman walked toward our table, her heels clicking confidently against the marble floor with a bright smile. She stopped beside Daniel and placed a hand gently on his shoulder.

My stomach dropped.

The way she stood there…it was like she already belonged to him.

Daniel looked at me again, his voice calm and cruel.

 "This is Sophia."

And she's carrying my child.

"Your child?"

She smiled sweetly.

"Hello, Amelia."

my chest tightened painfully.

I did not need anyone to explain anything to me anymore.

The way Daniel did not push her hand away.

The way she looked at him.

And the way he looked at her.

Everything finally began to make sense.

"So…this is why?" I whispered.

Daniel sighed impatiently.

"Amelia, let's not make this difficult for both of us."

My nails dug into my palm.

"Difficult you say." I repeated my voice shaking.

"Today is our third wedding anniversary."

"I know," he said flatly.

The words felt like a knife in my chest.

Sophia suddenly laughed softly.

"Oh, Daniel, you didn't tell me that."

Daniel did not respond.

Instead, he looked at me again.

"You should sign the papers. I will compensate you generously."

Compensate me.

As if three years of marriage could be bought like a business deal.

My eyes welled up in tears, but I refused to let them fall.

"So this is it?" I asked.

"You are leaving me for her?"

Daniel did not hesitate.

"Yes."

We have been together for three good years Amelia. No child from you.

My whole world shattered.

Three years ago, when Daniel had nothing I stood by his side.

I supported him when his company was collapsing.

I stayed with him when everyone else left.

But now that he was successful….

Now that he was rich…

 I was no longer useful.

Sophia leaned closer to him.

"Daniel, we should not keep Amelia waiting. I'm sure she understands."

I looked down at the divorce papers in my shaking hands.

Then slowly, I picked up the pen.

If he wanted freedom so badly…

Then I would give it to him.

But Daniel Carter had no idea.

The woman he was abandoning tonight.

Would soon become the one he could never reach again.

I signed my name.

 And at that moment.

My marriage officially ended.
