Lady Agnes's gaze moved toward her, and Penelope met it.
There was no warning or pleading in her expression that might betray the lie, but a calm, almost ordinary look. She made sure to keep her expression neutral.
Lady Sophia scrutinized her, as though trying to determine the faintest reaction that could betray the lie.
Lady Agnes stared at her for another second before understanding appeared. "Ah," The word came softly, and she immediately added, "Yes."
Lady Sophia relaxed slightly. "I thought so."
Lady Agnes nodded. "She did."
Penelope breathed again. Barely.
Lady Sophia smiled. "I was rather worried when she did not return home."
"I can understand why," She said.
Lady Agnes's expression became more natural now that she had found her footing.
