Lady Margaret was the last person standing. She passed a small look at them before retreating as well, closing the door gently behind her.
The moment their presence was no longer felt, Penelope's attention returned to the furious Lady. "Yes," She responded.
The room felt quiet and empty now. It was left with the three ladies and the coachman who appeared more than willing to join the others.
Lady Sophia's eyes narrowed at her response. "Which friend?" She asked. "For all I know, you hardly keep close acquaintances, let alone friends."
Penelope did not hesitate. "Lady Agnes."
The name came easily.
Agnes was an acquaintance of the family, a lady with whom Penelope had shared several afternoons during the previous Season. She was not particularly close to her, but she was sufficiently familiar to make the explanation believable.
Lady Sophia regarded her for a moment. "Lady Agnes?" She repeated. "And why, precisely, were you with Lady Agnes?"
