When the bath had been prepared, Anne dismissed the other servant and turned toward Penelope. "Everything is ready, miss."
Penelope nodded. "Thank you."
Anne approached the bed and offered her a hand.
Penelope looked at it. "I can stand."
"I know, miss. I was merely offering."
For a moment, Penelope considered refusing. Then she sighed and accepted the offered hand. "Thank you."
Anne helped her to her feet, remaining close enough to steady her as she crossed the room.
Penelope was grateful for the assistance, though she would never have admitted it aloud.
Once she had reached the screen, Anne helped her arrange her things within easy reach before quietly withdrawing. "I shall be just outside if you need anything."
"Thank you."
Penelope waited until the door had closed before allowing herself a small sigh.
At last, she thought. A little privacy.
She eased herself into the warm bath, letting the water rise around her as she settled against the edge of the tub.
