Hum—hum—hum!
The surrounding shadows rippled. From the realm of shadows, a dense swarm of dark figures fanned out, lurking in every corner of New York. They would serve as Lin Feng's eyes and ears, monitoring every movement in the city.
At the same time, Lin Feng set his sights on some of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s "goodies"—like the design blueprints for the New Element. If he could get his hands on those, he could strike a deal with Tony Stark and even make the billionaire owe him a massive favor. The prospect of having the legendary Iron Man at his beck and call was exciting, even with a system at his disposal.
As for Director "Braised Egg" Nick Fury?
He could stay in his own lane. Lin Feng wasn't a selfless hero; he had no interest in being a S.H.I.E.L.D. puppet.
...
Meanwhile, at Stark Industries.
Tony Stark finished his conversation with Natasha and headed back to his estate with his bodyguard Happy and his secretary, Pepper Potts. Sitting in the back of the luxury car, Tony opened his laptop and began typing away. The screen displayed the latest intelligence gathered by Jarvis.
"No ID? Unknown origin? Who exactly is this guy? Is he one of those legendary sorcerers?" Tony's mind was swirling with doubt.
Jarvis had been investigating Lin Feng. To Tony's surprise, the man seemed to have appeared out of thin air; there were no records of him anywhere. His activities could only be traced back three days. Currently, he was staying with a girl named Jessica.
"Maybe I can do something. If I can get on his good side, I might get a chance to study that armor..." Tony's eyes flickered. He wasn't ready to give up.
Though he possessed the pride of a genius, the power of the Black Rhino Armor was simply beyond current technology—it was at least decades ahead of its time. He could work on his own research, of course, but befriending Lin Feng was a strategic alternative. Besides, the man was his savior.
In the name of science, it's not called 'simping,' right? Tony thought to himself.
He decided to take the opportunity to try one more time. He picked up his phone and dialed his close friend in the military, Colonel Rhodes.
The call connected quickly, and a worried male voice came through. "Tony, are you okay? I just heard there was a terrorist attack at Stark Industries. What the hell happened?"
"Nothing much. Just Obadiah Stane trying to kill me," Tony quipped.
Happy, in the driver's seat, twitched his lips, barely suppressing a laugh. Pepper, sitting beside Tony, looked at him with eyes full of concern. No matter how big the crisis, Tony always maintained that flippant attitude.
"Uh..." On the other end of the line, Rhodey's face went dark. Could Tony ever be serious for once?
"Anyway, cut the chatter," Tony said, getting straight to the point. "I need you to help me arrange a set of identification documents. Should be simple for you, right? Don't tell me you don't have the pull."
"ID documents?" Rhodey hesitated, his curiosity piqued. "That's easy enough. But I'm curious—who is important enough to make you go through all this trouble?"
"An extraordinary individual," Tony said meaningfully.
Naturally, he wouldn't go around announcing Lin Feng's existence. In fact, he intended to help hide Lin Feng's identity. That was why he had Jarvis delete the surveillance footage—though it seemed the man himself had already taken precautions.
"Fine, I won't ask," Rhodey sighed, realizing he wouldn't get a straight answer. "I don't need to know who it is, but if I'm getting him documents, I at least need a name."
"His name is Lin Feng. Asian."
...
S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters, Briefing Room.
"Obadiah Stane is dead. Tony Stark did it."
"According to plan, I expressed S.H.I.E.L.D.'s goodwill to Stark and reached an agreement."
"Tomorrow, Stark Industries will coordinate with the authorities to announce that Obadiah Stane died in an accidental plane crash."
Natasha finished her report to Nick Fury. She stood there with a calm, indifferent expression. To her, whether in the past or now, S.H.I.E.L.D. was just a job. Only by constantly living on the edge of death could she forget her past traumas and feel that her existence had meaning.
"Mm. You did well, Natasha." Nick Fury's dark face showed no emotion. He waved a hand dismissively. "Go and get some rest. There shouldn't be any new missions for you for the next few days."Natasha remained noncommittal, simply nodding before making her exit. She strode out of the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, the roar of her motorcycle echoing as she sped away. However, her mind was far from settled.
"Obadiah Stane's death is likely not as simple as it seems on the surface. What exactly is Tony Stark trying to hide?"
Recalling her previous conversation with Stark, Natasha's eyes flickered with suspicion. It was perhaps a blend of her intuition as a woman and her instincts as a top-tier agent, but she could tell that when Tony spoke of Stane's demise, he was pointedly glossing over certain details.
The fact that she had attempted to pull the surveillance footage only to find it deleted was a dead giveaway. It was a classic case of "the lady doth protest too much"—or in this case, a billionaire being far too thorough in covering his tracks.
