Chapter 8 - THE FIGHT BEFORE FLIGHT

KAEL POV

Marcus came at him like a wounded beast.

The Alpha of Silvercrest dropped his human form and shifted mid-stride. His massive gray wolf form emerged with a roar that shook the ritual chamber. His scarred face twisted with rage. His yellow eyes burned with the need to kill.

He was trying to jump over Kael's shoulder. Trying to get to Liora.

Kael had anticipated it.

He shifted into his own wolf form and launched himself upward to meet Marcus head-on. The collision between them was brutal. It was like two mountains crashing together. The force of their impact shook the entire chamber. Warriors stumbled. The Alphas watching stepped backward. Torches flickered from the wind they created.

Kael felt ribs crack as Marcus's weight slammed into him.

But Kael was faster.

He was younger. Stronger. Hungrier. And he had something Marcus didn't have anymore. He had a reason to win that went beyond pride or territory or power. He had a mate to protect.

Kael twisted mid-fall and used Marcus's own momentum against him. He spun and brought his fangs up toward the older Alpha's exposed belly. Marcus rolled away but not fast enough. Kael's teeth raked across his shoulder, tearing through fur and flesh.

Blood poured onto the stone floor.

Marcus howled.

The sound was fury and pain combined. The Alpha tried to counter but Kael was already moving. He didn't play. He didn't posture. He fought to end this. Now.

He pressed forward with controlled brutality. Every move was designed to wound. Every strike was aimed at a vital location. His fangs found flesh again and again. His claws tore into muscle.

Around them, the Alphas were shouting.

Some were calling for Marcus to finish him. Some were recognizing that Kael had invoked ancient law and that attacking him now would violate everything their civilization was built on. The chamber erupted into argument even as the two wolves fought for dominance on the blood-soaked floor.

Kael didn't hear any of it.

He was focused entirely on one thing. Breaking Marcus's will to continue. Breaking his confidence. Making him understand that Liora was not an acceptable target.

Marcus tried to shift his stance but his shoulder was too damaged. Pain flashed across his face every time he put weight on the wounded side. His movements were getting slower. More desperate.

Kael pressed harder.

The fight lasted maybe two minutes. It felt like a lifetime and an instant at the same time. All violence and blood and the primal need to protect what was yours.

Marcus backed down.

The older Alpha stopped attacking and turned his body sideways, showing submission while still remaining in wolf form. It was a calculated gesture. Enough to acknowledge defeat without completely surrendering his status.

But it was submission nonetheless.

Kael stood over him with fangs bared.

His mouth opened and he delivered a message that every wolf in the chamber would understand.

Touch her again and I will kill you. Next time I will not stop.

The threat hung in the air between them.

Marcus's yellow eyes burned but he didn't challenge again. He couldn't. He was wounded and weakened. Kael was fresh and absolutely lethal.

Kael shifted back to human form.

Blood dripped down his chest from claw marks. His breathing was heavy. His muscles ached from the intensity of the fight. But he was standing and Marcus was kneeling and that was all that mattered.

He looked directly at the council.

His voice carried absolute authority.

Shadowpeak Pack is leaving this chamber. I am taking my claimed mate and my warriors back to Shadowpeak territory. Any pack that follows us with weapons will be met with war. Any pack that attempts to harm my mate will face my challenge. This is not a threat. This is law.

The Alphas exchanged glances.

Soren stepped forward from the shadows. His white streaked hair fell across his face as he smiled that smile that showed no kindness.

The council will convene. A trial will be held. And the fate of the abomination will be decided through proper channels.

Kael met his gaze directly.

The fate of my mate will be decided by her strength and her choice. No council. No trial. Just her power and her will.

He turned away from Soren before the elder could respond.

Vex was already organizing the Shadowpeak warriors. They were forming a protective circle, their weapons drawn but not raised. A show of force but not an immediate threat. The message was clear. Shadowpeak was leaving. Try to stop them at your peril.

Kael extended his hand toward Liora.

She was standing in the shadows where he had left her. Her violet eyes were wide. Her silver hair was disheveled. She looked terrified and powerful and absolutely beautiful.

She took his hand without hesitation.

Her fingers were ice cold but her grip was sure. She trusted him. After everything that had happened, after the chaos and the violence and the revelation that she now had power beyond measure, she was choosing to trust a stranger who had claimed her as mate.

Kael squeezed her hand gently and pulled her close.

They walked toward the chamber exit together.

Every eye in the room was on them.

The Alphas watched. The warriors watched. The council elders watched. Marcus watched with wounded fury. Even the servants who had tried to be invisible now stared openly at the Omega who had revealed herself and the Alpha who had chosen to defend her.

Liora held her head high as they walked.

She didn't look at the faces staring at her. Didn't acknowledge the danger or the judgment or the execution sentence that was already being decided in the minds of the people watching her leave. She just walked beside Kael like she was someone who belonged at an Alpha's side.

Like she had always belonged there.

They reached the chamber entrance.

The moonlight outside was bright enough to cast clear shadows. The night was cold and clean and full of possibility. Kael could see the Shadowpeak warriors gathered below, their horses ready, their weapons maintained.

They were minutes away from escaping this place.

Minutes away from getting Liora to safety.

Then Liora stopped walking.

Kael felt her grip tighten on his hand. He turned to look at her face.

She was staring back at the ritual chamber. Back at Marcus who was still in wolf form, watching her leave. Back at the council who were already whispering about the trial. Back at the world that had just decided she needed to die.

Her violet eyes were bright with tears but her voice was steady.

They're going to vote for my execution, aren't they?

It wasn't a question. She already knew the answer.

Kael pulled her closer.

Yes. But we won't let them get to that vote.

How? Her voice was barely a whisper. I just showed them I can control them. I just proved that everything they believe about rank and power and hierarchy is a lie. They will never forgive that. They will hunt me forever.

Kael tilted her chin up with one finger.

His silver eyes locked onto her violet ones.

Then we will show them that they need to learn a new way. Together. You and me. That's what mates do. We don't just survive. We rebuild.

She didn't look convinced but she was still holding his hand.

Vex appeared beside them.

We need to move. Marcus is already sending signals. The other packs are organizing. They're not going to let us leave without resistance.

A sound echoed through the mountains.

Not a wolf howl. But a horn. The hunting horn of the pack warriors. The signal to mobilize. The call to arms.

Marcus was already beginning his hunt.

Kael pulled Liora down the mountain path with Vex leading the way. The Shadowpeak warriors moved around them in tight formation. Their horses were ready. Their weapons were drawn. Every one of them had just chosen to stand with their Alpha against the entire werewolf hierarchy.

They were minutes away from Shadowpeak territory.

Minutes away from where Kael could defend Liora with full Alpha authority. Where his pack would fight to their last breath to keep her alive. Where the ancient laws would protect her from immediate execution.

But even as they rode hard through the darkness, Kael could hear more horns.

More packs were gathering.

More warriors were mobilizing.

Word was spreading through the territories like wildfire. An Omega with impossible power. An Alpha heir who had claimed her as mate. A violation of the natural order that had to be corrected immediately.

The entire werewolf world was waking up.

And it was coming for Liora.
