Chapter 17 - CHAPTER-17

Chapter 17: Unanswered Echoes

The Restaurant Parking Lot – 06:30 PM.

The sky has turned a deep, bruised indigo. HAEYOUNG stands by her car, waving a final goodbye to Chaeyoung. As she slides into the driver's seat, the silence of the car is broken by the sharp vibration of her phone.

An Unknown Number flashes on the screen. She hesitates, then swipes to answer.

Haeyoung: "Hello?"

Silence. Only the faint, static hum of the line greets her.

Haeyoung: (Frowning) "Hello? Is anyone there? Hello?"

On the other end of the line, JUNGHAN is sitting in his dark office, the phone pressed tight to his ear. Hearing her voice—clear, steady, yet slightly tired—makes his heart do a strange, uncomfortable somersault. He had the words practiced, but now they're stuck in his throat. He just listens to her breathe for a second too long.

Junghan: (Finally, his voice low) "Hello..."

Haeyoung: "Who is this?"

Junghan: "It's Junghan Kim. The Director."

Haeyoung: (Surprised, leaning back against her seat) "Oh. Hello. How... why are you calling me, Mr. Director?"

Junghan: "I wanted to ask why you didn't come to work today."

Haeyoung: "I took a leave of absence. That's why."

Junghan: "Are you okay?"

Haeyoung: (Taken aback by the softness in his tone) "Huh? What?"

Junghan: (Quickly shifting back to his 'Professional' mask) "I mean... are you sick? My company's contract with the airport is only for a month. We can't afford to delay the workflow or waste time because a senior pilot is missing."

Haeyoung: (A small, knowing smile touches her lips) "Oh, I see. Rest assured, Mr. Director, I'll be back at the airport tomorrow. I just wasn't feeling well today."

Junghan: "Good. Take care of yourself. And... you shouldn't stand in the rain like that again. It's not good for you."

Haeyoung: "Thank you for asking after my well-being, Director."

Junghan: "It's fine. Save my number."

Haeyoung: "I will."

As the line clicks dead, Haeyoung stares at the screen. She types in 'Director Junghan Kim' and saves it. Across town, Junghan does the same, staring at the name 'Captain Hong' as if it were a complex blueprint he's trying to solve.

The Sidewalk – Near the Airport.

HYUNA and JAE-WON are walking hand-in-hand toward a restaurant, the neon lights of the city reflecting in their eyes. They look like the perfect "new couple," but the bubble is burst when Hyuna's phone rings.

Hyuna: "Yes, Mom?"

Mom: (Urgent) "Hyuna, are you coming home with Junghan? I've invited his mother over tonight."

Hyuna: "What? Why? Mom... why now?"

Mom: "I forgot to tell you—Aunty Lee is getting remarried. She wants to share the news properly. We have a long family connection, so I invited her over."

Hyuna: "Yeah... okay. I'm coming."

She hangs up, her face clouded with worry. Jae-won notices the shift immediately.

Jae-won: "What did she say?"

Hyuna: "My mom invited guests, so I have to get home early. I'm sorry, Jae-won. Can we do dinner tomorrow instead?"

Jae-won: (Nodding, though disappointed) "Of course. Is everything okay?"

Hyuna: "It's Junghan Sunbae. Our families are... well, they're very close. My dad and his dad are best friends, and our moms are the same. But his family life is so messy. His parents divorced years ago, and he barely speaks to them. Now his mom is remarrying... I can't help but worry about how he's feeling. This will hurt him."

Jae-won stops walking and turns to her, his expression serious. He reaches out and tucks a lock of hair behind her ear.

Jae-won: "Hyuna, listen to me. You shouldn't care about that anymore. Stay away from matters that take a toll on your mental health. He's a grown man; he has to handle his own family. Don't let his shadows dim your light."

Hyuna looks at him—at the safety and simplicity he offers—and smiles. "You're right. Thank you."

The Design Hub – Late Night.

The airport is quiet, but JUNGHAN hasn't moved from his desk. He has an invitation sitting in his pocket—an invitation to the Park family home (Hyuna's house).

He knows his mother will be there. He knows the man she is marrying will be there, smiling and pretending they are one big, happy family. After the divorce, Junghan felt abandoned, like a discarded sketch from a project that failed. He has spent years building walls of "Directorship" and "Art" to keep his parents out.

He looks at the door. He should go. It's polite. It's "family."

But then he looks at his phone, at Haeyoung's newly saved number. He feels a sudden, sharp pang of rebellion. Why should he go and watch his mother start a new life while he's still haunted by the old one?

He grabs his car keys and heads for the exit—not toward Hyuna's house, but toward the open road, his red eyes reflecting the lonely glare of the streetlamps.
