Chapter 16: The Gravity of Choice
A Quiet Cafe – 10:00 AM.
HAEYOUNG sits by the window, watching the rain from last night leave puddles on the pavement. She hasn't slept. Her intuition—the sharp, pilot's instinct that never fails her—is screaming that something shifted between Jae-won and Hyuna last night.
She couldn't bring herself to put on the uniform today. She called in sick for the first time in three years. Her hand shakes slightly as she dials a number.
Chaeyoung: (Picking up with a loud laugh) "Yooo! How's my favorite pilot calling me in the middle of a shift? You finally quit?"
Haeyoung: "It's been a while, Chaeyoung. Let's meet for lunch."
Incheon Airport – Tarmac.
HYUNA is moving with a new kind of purpose. She spent the entire night weighing 15 years of shadows against 3 weeks of sunshine. She's waiting. Every time the sliding doors open, her eyes dart upward.
JUNGHAN approaches her, looking tired but sharp. He takes the reports from her hand.
Junghan: "The efficiency is up today. Good work, Hyuna."
Hyuna: "Thank you, Sunbae-nim."
Junghan nods, but his eyes immediately drift toward the pilot briefing room. He's looking for the one person who usually ignores him. He waits five minutes, then ten. Finally, JAE-WON walks in, looking refreshed despite the wine from the night before.
Jae-won: "Morning, everyone! Let's get to it."
He catches Hyuna's eye. A secret, warm smile passes between them—a silent "Did you think about it?" Junghan notices the vibe but chooses to focus on his missing puzzle piece.
Junghan: "Where is Captain Hong? She's never late."
Jae-won: "She took a leave today. Authority said she wasn't feeling well. Probably a cold from the rain."
Junghan: (Stepping forward, his voice losing its calm) "What? She's sick? What exactly happened? Was she coughing? Did she—"
The whole team stops and stares. Junghan realizes he's overreacting and clears his throat, adjusting his tie.
Junghan: "I mean... as the project lead, I need to know the status of my pilots. What happened to her?"
Jae-won: "I don't know, Director. She didn't pick up my phone. That's not like her."
Junghan turns and walks back to his office, his mind racing. She was fine at the river. Was it something I said? Or something she saw?
The Restaurant – 01:30 PM.
HAEYOUNG is picking at her salad while CHAEYOUNG watches her with narrowed eyes.
Chaeyoung: "What happened to my stunning, hot, 'I-can-fly-a-Boeing-747' lady? You look low, babe."
Haeyoung: "I'm fine. Just tired."
Chaeyoung: "Liar. You're not happy, but you're not exactly sad either. You're... hollow. Is this about London? Are you finally going to see your parents?"
Haeyoung: "I'm thinking about going there for good. Leaving Korea."
Chaeyoung: "What? Why? You love it here! You stayed here even when they left because of... because of Jae-won, right?"
Haeyoung: "No. That's not why."
Chaeyoung: "Bro, please. You expect me to believe a person like you stayed in a different country for a 'normal friend'? You like him. Admit it."
Haeyoung: "Leave it, Chaeyoung. It doesn't matter anymore. Some things are just better left as they are."
Airport Storage Room – 05:00 PM.
The afternoon light is dim. Jae-won pulls Hyuna into the room and closes the door.
Jae-won: "So? Did you think about what I said? My heart has been at 40,000 feet all day waiting for you."
Hyuna: "I did. You're a good person, Jae-won. A really good person."
Jae-won: "You're better. You're the kind of person who could make anyone fall."
Hyuna: (Taking a breath) "Yes. I'll date you."
Jae-won's face lights up like a runway. "Really? You mean it?"
Hyuna: "Yes. But... I want you to answer one thing. Honestly."
Jae-won: "Anything."
Hyuna: "Captain Hong... Haeyoung. She is your best friend. She's magnetic, beautiful, exotic. Anyone would fall for her without her even trying. Why didn't you fall for her in all these years?"
Jae-won goes quiet. He looks at the floor, his expression becoming serious.
Jae-won: "I know she's the most beautiful woman. And falling for her... yeah, it would be easy. Not just because of her face, but because she's the most real person I've ever met. She's incredibly caring underneath all that ice."
He looks Hyuna in the eye.
Jae-won: "I could have fallen. But I didn't because I respect our friendship too much. I didn't want to ruin the only thing she truly trusts."
Hyuna: "And what if she didn't think of you as just a best friend?"
Jae-won: (Laughing, trying to lighten the mood) "Then she would definitely be my wife by now, not just a girlfriend! She's a lot to handle."
Hyuna hits his arm, laughing. "You're so funny."
Jae-won: "So... officially my girlfriend?"
Hyuna nods and leans into a hug. Jae-won wraps his arms around her, finally feeling like he's landed.
Suddenly, the door swings open. SUNG-MIN stands there with a folder, his jaw literally hitting his chest. His eyes are dinner plates. He slowly backs out, turns, and runs down the hall without a word.
The Authority Office – 06:00 PM.
JUNGHAN is ignoring his design work. He's digging through the pilot emergency contact files. He finds the page for HONG HAEYOUNG. He stares at her phone number.
He picks up his phone, his thumb hovering over the "Call" button. He wants to know if she's okay, but more than that, he wants to know why the airport feels so empty without her.
