Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 — A Public Problem

The hospital had rules.

Unwritten ones.

Unspoken ones.

And one that had become very clear over the past week:

Stay out of Vladimir Volkov's way.

It wasn't something anyone had officially announced.

But people understood.

They felt it in the way conversations quieted when he entered a hallway, in the way nurses subtly changed routes to avoid crossing paths with him, in the way even senior staff kept their interactions brief and strictly professional.

He didn't need to threaten anyone.

He didn't need to raise his voice.

His presence alone was enough.

And yet—

There was one person who didn't follow that rule.

Alexander Kazafi.

"Doctor Kazafi, room 312 needs you."

"Doctor, the lab reports—"

"Doctor Kazafi, one minute—"

Alexander moved through the corridor with steady efficiency, his attention shifting seamlessly from one task to another. His expression remained calm, focused, and composed—completely unaffected by the subtle tension that lingered around the ward.

But today—

Something was off.

Not around him.

Around someone else.

Vladimir Volkov had left his room.

Again.

And this time—

He wasn't alone.

Alexander turned the corner and stopped.

There he was.

Standing near the nurse station, towering over everyone as usual—but instead of silence or fear, there was… conversation.

Dr. Emilia Stark stood across from him, arms crossed, completely at ease.

"…you can't just walk out whenever you feel like it," she was saying, her tone firm but not afraid.

Vladimir looked down at her, expression unreadable.

"I can," he replied calmly.

"You shouldn't."

"That's different."

A few nurses hovered nearby, watching nervously.

Not because they expected violence—

But because they didn't know what would happen.

And then—

Vladimir's gaze shifted.

Directly to Alexander.

The effect was immediate.

Like a switch being flipped.

The conversation paused.

The air changed.

"…Doctor," Vladimir said.

Emilia turned slightly, noticing Alexander's presence.

"Oh, perfect timing," she said lightly. "Your patient is refusing to cooperate again."

Alexander walked closer, expression neutral.

"Of course he is."

Vladimir's eyes didn't leave him.

"Busy?" he asked.

Alexander stopped just a few steps away.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"…Too busy?"

The question was simple.

But the tone?

It wasn't.

Alexander's gaze sharpened slightly.

"Is there a point to this?"

Vladimir took a step forward.

Not aggressive.

Not threatening.

But deliberate.

"Yes," he said quietly. "You didn't come to my room."

The hallway went still.

Emilia blinked.

The nurses froze.

Alexander didn't react immediately.

But inside—

Something tightened.

"I had work," he replied.

"You always have work."

"Yes."

Another step.

Closer now.

"And yet," Vladimir continued, "you had time for everyone else."

There it was.

Not loud.

Not obvious.

But clear enough.

Emilia raised an eyebrow slightly, glancing between them.

"…Am I interrupting something?" she asked, a hint of curiosity in her tone.

Alexander ignored that.

"You're out of your room again," he said, redirecting the conversation. "Return."

Vladimir didn't move.

Instead, he said:

"…You didn't answer."

Alexander's patience thinned—just slightly.

"I don't need to."

"No," Vladimir agreed. "You don't."

A pause.

Then—

"…But you will."

That was when Alexander stepped forward.

Closing the distance.

"Mr. Volkov," he said quietly, voice calm but firm, "this is not a negotiation. You're disrupting the ward. Go back."

Silence.

For a moment, it looked like Vladimir might refuse.

Again.

The tension thickened.

Staff held their breath.

Then—

Vladimir smiled.

Not wide.

Not obvious.

But there.

"…You're irritated," he observed.

Alexander's expression didn't change.

"I'm doing my job."

"No," Vladimir said softly. "You're reacting."

That—

Was noticed.

Emilia's gaze sharpened slightly.

Alexander didn't respond.

Instead, he turned slightly.

"Back. To your room."

This time—

Vladimir moved.

But not before his eyes lingered on Alexander for just a second too long.

The walk back was silent.

Alexander walked ahead.

Vladimir followed.

And yet—

Despite the silence, the tension didn't fade.

It grew.

Because now—

People had seen it.

Inside the room, the door closed with a quiet click.

Alexander didn't turn immediately.

He set his clipboard down, adjusted his sleeves, and only then faced him.

"You're causing unnecessary attention," he said.

Vladimir leaned back against the door.

"…And?"

"And it's interfering with hospital operations."

"Is that all?"

Alexander frowned slightly. "What else would it be?"

Vladimir didn't answer right away.

Instead, he pushed off the door and walked closer.

Slow.

Measured.

"You tell me," he said.

Alexander held his ground.

"You're being disruptive," he repeated.

"And you're avoiding the question."

"There is no question."

"Yes, there is."

A pause.

Then—

"Why are you avoiding me?"

There it was.

Direct.

Unavoidable.

Alexander exhaled slowly.

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I have responsibilities."

"And I have eyes," Vladimir replied calmly.

Silence.

Alexander's jaw tightened slightly.

"You're overstepping."

"Am I?"

"Yes."

Another step.

Closer.

"You didn't seem to think so yesterday."

That—

Hit.

Alexander's chest tightened, just slightly.

"That was different."

"How?"

"…It just was."

Vladimir studied him.

Carefully.

"You don't like not being in control," he said.

Alexander frowned. "This isn't about control."

"No?"

"No."

"Then what is it about?"

Alexander didn't answer.

Because he didn't have one.

Not a clear one.

"…Irrelevant," he said finally.

Vladimir's lips curved faintly.

"…Not to me."

Another silence.

But this one—

Felt heavier than anything before.

Because now—

It wasn't just tension.

It was something else.

Something neither of them had defined yet.

And that made it dangerous.

"You're overanalyzing," Alexander said, turning away.

"And you're underestimating," Vladimir replied.

Alexander stopped.

"…What?"

"You."

That wasn't the answer he expected.

Alexander turned back slowly.

Vladimir's gaze was steady.

Focused.

"You think this is just part of your job," he continued. "A difficult patient. A temporary situation."

"It is."

"…Is it?"

Alexander didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"…We'll see."

The rest of the check-up was quiet.

But not calm.

And when Alexander finally left the room—

He didn't slow down.

Didn't look back.

But in the hallway—

Emilia was waiting.

"Well," she said lightly, "that was interesting."

Alexander didn't stop. "You were listening?"

"I wasn't trying to," she replied. "You're just… not subtle."

Alexander exhaled. "…There's nothing to see."

"Mhm."

She walked beside him.

"You know he's watching you, right?"

"I'm aware."

"And?"

"…He's a patient."

Emilia smiled faintly.

"…If you say so."

Back in the room—

Vladimir sat alone.

But his expression—

Wasn't the same as before.

Because now—

It wasn't just curiosity.

It was interest.

Focused.

Deliberate.

And growing.

"…Not just a doctor," he murmured under his breath.

And for the first time—

The game had moved beyond simple control.

It had become something far more complicated.
