Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 — After the Line

The hospital returned to its usual rhythm.

Or at least, it tried to.

Machines beeped. Nurses moved. Patients spoke in hushed voices.

Everything looked normal.

But for Alexander Kazafi—

It wasn't.

Because now, every time he stepped onto that floor, there was a subtle awareness at the back of his mind.

A presence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Vladimir Volkov.

Alexander didn't like it.

Not because he was afraid.

But because he was… aware.

Of him.

That morning, Alexander deliberately delayed his rounds.

He checked other patients first. Took longer than necessary reviewing charts. Even stopped to assist an intern with something trivial.

Anything—

To avoid going back to that room too soon.

It was unnecessary.

Unprofessional.

And he knew it.

"…You're avoiding him."

Alexander looked up sharply.

Dr. Emilia stood across from him, arms folded, a knowing expression on her face.

"…I'm not," Alexander replied immediately.

She raised an eyebrow. "You've walked past his ward three times."

"…I'm busy."

"Mhm."

Alexander exhaled slowly. "He's a difficult patient."

"That's one way to put it."

Emilia leaned slightly closer. "The nurses are saying he hasn't moved since morning."

Alexander paused.

"…Hasn't moved?"

"Not even once," she said. "No wandering. No trouble. Nothing."

That didn't feel right.

"…I'll check on him," Alexander said.

And just like that—

He went.

The walk to the ward felt longer than usual.

Slower.

Every step echoing a little too clearly in his ears.

When he reached the door, he paused.

Just for a second.

Then—

He opened it.

Vladimir was exactly where Emilia said he would be.

Sitting on the bed.

Still.

Silent.

But the moment Alexander stepped inside—

Gray eyes lifted.

Locked onto him instantly.

"You're late."

The words were calm.

Measured.

But they landed heavier than they should have.

Alexander closed the door behind him. "…I had other patients."

"You always do."

"Yes."

Silence.

Alexander moved forward, setting his clipboard down.

"You didn't leave the room today."

It wasn't a question.

"No."

"…Why?"

Vladimir leaned back slightly, eyes never leaving him.

"…I was thinking."

That—

Somehow felt more dangerous than anything else.

"About what?" Alexander asked.

A pause.

Then—

"You."

Alexander froze.

Just for a fraction of a second.

Then he recovered.

"…That sounds unproductive."

A faint smirk.

"It wasn't."

Alexander ignored that.

"Lie back," he said.

This time—

Vladimir didn't argue.

He lay back slowly, almost deliberately.

Like he was testing something.

Alexander stepped closer, professional as ever, reaching for the stethoscope.

But as he leaned in—

He felt it.

That gaze.

Not casual.

Not teasing.

Focused.

Studying him.

"You're distracted," Vladimir said quietly.

Alexander didn't look up.

"I'm not."

"You are."

"No, I'm not."

A pause.

Then—

"…Your hand is colder than usual."

That made Alexander stop.

Just for a second.

Then he continued.

"…Observation doesn't equal understanding."

Vladimir's lips curved faintly.

"…Maybe not. But it's a start."

The silence stretched again.

But this time—

It wasn't sharp.

It was… heavy.

"You're thinking too much," Alexander said finally.

"And you're avoiding things."

That hit closer than expected.

Alexander straightened, pulling back slightly.

"I don't avoid anything."

Vladimir's gray eyes flicked up to meet his.

"Then why did you hesitate outside the door?"

Alexander's chest tightened.

"…You're imagining things."

"No."

The word was quiet.

Certain.

"I heard your footsteps," Vladimir continued. "They stopped."

Alexander didn't respond.

"Why?" Vladimir asked.

The question wasn't aggressive.

But it wasn't light either.

It was direct.

Alexander exhaled slowly.

"…Because you're a difficult patient."

A pause.

Then—

"…That's not the real reason."

Alexander's gaze sharpened. "And what is?"

Vladimir didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached out—

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Not grabbing.

Not forcing.

Just—

Brushing his fingers lightly against Alexander's wrist.

The same place.

The same spot.

Alexander froze.

This time—

The touch was lighter.

Barely there.

But somehow—

More noticeable.

"…This," Vladimir said quietly.

Alexander pulled his hand back immediately.

"That won't happen again," he said.

"Why not?"

"Because it's inappropriate."

Vladimir tilted his head slightly.

"…And yesterday?"

"That was different."

"How?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Because he didn't have one.

"…It just was."

Vladimir watched him closely.

"…You didn't pull away yesterday."

"And I did today."

"Yes."

A pause.

Then—

"…Interesting."

Alexander frowned slightly. "What is?"

"You're reacting now."

"I'm always reacting."

"No," Vladimir said softly. "Before, you were in control."

Alexander's chest tightened slightly.

"And now?" he asked.

Vladimir's gaze darkened, just slightly.

"…Now you're aware."

Silence.

Alexander turned away, picking up his clipboard again.

"That changes nothing."

"Doesn't it?"

"No."

But his voice—

Was just a little tighter.

Vladimir noticed.

Of course he did.

"…You're not as unaffected as you think," he said.

Alexander didn't look at him.

"…And you're not as in control as you think."

That made Vladimir pause.

Then—

A slow smile spread across his face.

"…Maybe," he admitted.

Another silence settled.

But this one—

Felt different.

Less like a battle.

More like… a shift.

As Alexander finished the check-up, he moved toward the door.

"Doctor."

He stopped.

"…What?"

A pause.

Then—

"Don't avoid me."

Alexander frowned slightly.

"I'm not."

"You were."

"…I had work."

"Excuses."

Alexander turned slightly, irritation flickering in his expression.

"I don't owe you explanations."

"No," Vladimir agreed. "You don't."

A beat.

Then—

"…But I'm still asking."

That—

Caught him off guard.

Just slightly.

Alexander studied him for a moment.

Trying to read something in that expression.

Something beyond the usual control.

But Vladimir gave nothing away.

"…Focus on your recovery," Alexander said finally.

And then—

He left.

The door closed.

And once again—

Vladimir was alone.

But this time—

He wasn't thinking about control.

Or power.

Or games.

He was thinking about something far more complicated.

The way Alexander had reacted.

The hesitation.

The awareness.

The shift.

And for the first time—

Vladimir Volkov realized something important.

This wasn't just a game anymore.

And that made it…

Infinitely more interesting.
