Loreen's POV
From the moment Loreen knew that Candice was sick and that Sairis had walked into the palace wearing Candice's face to protect her and help her keep her place, Loreen had known that ending the engagement was going to land hardest on the person who deserved it least.
Sairis had risked everything keeping Candice safe and getting her to this point. Pulling that apart, even for the right reasons, was going to cost him something.
So Loreen had made a quiet decision to let the process run its course.
Candice was sick. The examination results would show it, whether they liked it or not. The engagement would end on the grounds that nobody could argue with and nobody could blame on anyone in particular.
It was cleaner that way. It protected the crown's reputation and it protected the Taal family name from the kind of damage that came with lady Candice being rejected by the regent without cause.
It was the right way to handle it. He still believed that.
