Chapter 20 - The Dutiful Greg

The moment Greg heard the car alarms blaring outside the emergency entrance, his instincts immediately sharpened.

Without drawing attention, he sent a message to the patrol guards.

But as a security guard, his responsibilities required him to leave the booth and check the parking lot himself.

He had good reason to suspect that the situation might be connected to the man who had just arrived at the hospital—Bince.

In Greg's eyes, that man was strange.

A strange aura surrounded him—one Greg had never encountered before.

It carried the unmistakable scent of death.

Greg chose observation rather than confrontation.

Not because he was patient by nature, but because acting rashly would be foolish.

He couldn't confirm the man's identity.

Nor could he confirm whether the man had come here to cause trouble.

The hospital gates were open to the public.

Even though Greg held considerable authority as a security guard, attacking a visitor without justification could easily backfire on him.

Besides, wasn't this exactly the moment for his Nen ability—

"Dutiful Greg."

Greg had dreamed of becoming a security guard since childhood.

He loved Nen abilities.

But even more than that, he loved the perfect security ability he had developed based on his life's goal.

Once a visitor filled out the registration form he held, then within the hospital grounds Greg was responsible for guarding, he could locate the target's precise position through the map printed in the registration book.

Calling the visitor's phone served as the next stage of the ability.

On the surface, it verified whether the contact information was correct.

But in reality, the call allowed Greg to attach his Nen to the visitor's phone.

If the target answered the call, it meant they had agreed to be monitored by Greg within his area of responsibility.

If the target refused the call, it suggested possible malicious intent.

In that case, Greg's Nen would attach remotely to the target's phone and complete the monitoring effect after five minutes of contact or after the call had been rejected three times.

Once activated, Greg could pull up surveillance footage of the target's location on the security monitors in the booth.

Greg was waiting.

Waiting for those five minutes to pass.

He wouldn't keep calling the target.

That might provoke suspicion or resistance.

And worse—

the visitor might file a complaint.

Complaints meant salary deductions.

When Greg stepped out of the booth and left the emergency building, he confirmed Bince's position on the registration map.

As soon as he exited, he noticed the vehicle with the blaring alarm.

He switched on his high-powered flashlight and aimed it toward the parking lot.

A small figure darted away quickly.

A cat?

Greg wasn't certain.

He began walking toward the parking area.

But before he even reached it, he suddenly froze.

It wasn't because he had identified the creature causing the disturbance.

It was because the map in the registration book showed that Bince had left the doctor's office.

The marker had moved.

And it now appeared on the second floor of the emergency building, moving rapidly.

Greg immediately turned back toward the building.

But at that exact moment, he finally saw the creatures clearly.

Several monsters were charging toward him.

They ran on powerful hind legs.

Their forelimbs were sharp.

Their mouths were filled with vicious rows of teeth.

Dinosaurs.

Greg recognized them instantly.

His hand dropped to his waist.

He unfastened his holster and drew his pistol in one smooth motion.

The gun came up.

He aimed at the approaching dinosaurs.

And without hesitation—

he pulled the trigger.

Bang!

The gunshot shattered the quiet of the early morning.

On the second floor, Ivan was moving quickly according to the directional signs.

Then the gunshot suddenly echoed from outside.

The guard's response was far more aggressive than Ivan expected.

It made him question the reason behind such a reaction.

After all, the creatures attacking the guard were Compsognathus-like dinosaurs.

Small predators.

Their size was their defining trait.

They were tiny.

Combined with their incredible speed, using a gun against them was far from the smartest option.

Unless the guard considered himself a master marksman capable of hitting moving targets perfectly every time.

Otherwise, a trained security guard—especially one who was also a Nen user—would most likely choose a baton as their first weapon.

Yet the guard had fired immediately.

The first thought that crossed Ivan's mind was simple.

The guard had already realized Ivan had begun moving.

The gunshot wasn't meant for the dinosaurs.

It was a signal.

A faster way to alert his colleagues.

A hospital this large would never rely on a single guard.

If that was the case, then Ivan had guessed wrong.

The guard must have been able to observe him through the phone's Nen ability.

Now it was a race.

Would Ivan uncover the hospital's secret first—

or would the guards catch him?

The morgue wasn't difficult to locate.

Hospitals followed strict regulations regarding morgue construction.

They were usually located either in the basement or in a separate building designated for bodies.

Confirming this was easy.

Hospitals were filled with directional signs.

Each floor also displayed overview maps.

These maps mainly marked emergency exits, allowing people to evacuate quickly in case of fire or earthquakes.

Ivan moved quickly through the corridors.

He passed through the hallway connecting the emergency building to the outpatient building, entered the outpatient lobby, and descended to the first floor.

There he found the main hospital map.

The morgue was located in a separate small building.

But Ivan also noticed something else.

A somewhat isolated inpatient ward not far from the morgue.

It was also quite close to the ocean.

He frowned slightly and memorized the location.

If the morgue revealed nothing, he would investigate there next.

The label on the map read:

Third Hospital — Psychiatric Ward Inpatient Building 1.

Suddenly, a beam of bright light shone through the glass doors of the outpatient lobby.

It swept across the hall and quickly scanned toward Ivan's position.

Ivan frowned again.

A new thought surfaced in his mind.

The guards had arrived far too quickly.

And their movement was too precise.

Had they located him through surveillance cameras?

Or had his earlier judgment about the emergency guard's Nen ability been wrong?

Ivan's gaze swept over the guards who were unlocking the doors and rushing into the lobby with guns drawn.

None of them appeared to be Nen users.

Of course, they might simply be hiding it.

But at the very least, the guard he had encountered earlier wasn't among them.

Ivan's body began to change.

In his right hand, a tennis ball appeared.

The guards slowly advanced.

When they reached a distance of about fifteen meters, the leading guard received a command through his earpiece.

He didn't hesitate.

He raised his pistol toward Ivan—

and pulled the trigger.

Bang!
