Chapter 16 - How was this possible? And The Master Plan Revealed

Rani stared at him in total disbelief. Tears streamed down her face—a chaotic mix of shock, overwhelming joy, and confusion. Her voice failed her as she struggled to find words. The man reached out and pulled her up from the ground, but Rani's legs still felt like lead.

Rani: "You... but you're..."

Rakesh: "Yes, it's me. The same unlucky, poor Rakesh. You don't even recognize your own husband? Why, are you not happy to see me?"

Rani: "How can I not be happy? No one but me knows how I've spent every single moment of this past year. But how is this possible? Are you the real Rakesh or a ghost? Or someone who looks just like him? If you are really him, then what happened a year ago?"

Rakesh: "How I came to be standing before you today... that is a story your father will have to tell. Go on, Father-in-law, you explain."

Rani's father, who had been standing nearby, stepped forward and began to recount the events of that fateful night.

The Father's Confession

"The news everyone heard about Rakesh's death... it wasn't true," her father began. "The neighbor who came to our house that morning actually told me that Rakesh had injured his head and was admitted to the hospital. In that moment, I made a split-second decision. I kept a cool head and pretended he had died."

He continued, "I took Rani's mother with me so she wouldn't get suspicious, but I didn't take anyone else because I didn't want the truth to leak out. I didn't take you, Rani, because you had left that helpless boy alone that night, leading to the accident. I feared his family would insult you if you showed up. When we reached the hospital and saw Rakesh was stable, I made him a proposal."

The Father's words to Rakesh at the hospital:

"Rakesh, I know Rani did you a great wrong. I apologize on her behalf. I've felt ashamed of her behavior since the wedding. She didn't know you fell when she left, but she still left you alone when you were vulnerable. I believe you both need a year apart. No contact, no news. I have told everyone you are dead so she can realize what life is truly like without the person she loves. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and I want her to grow out of her childish ways. Change your number and wait for my signal."
