The next morning, the smell of burnt toast woke me up. I rubbed from my eyes, and walked into the kitchen. Charles was standing by the stove, looking tired.
"Hey," Charles said, looking at me as he flipped a piece of bacon. "Listen... about last night. I shouldn't have lost it like that. I'm really sorry."
"It's okay, Charles. It's fine," I said softly, grabbing a mug. I didn't want to rehash the argument. I knew he cared, but my head was already too full to handle another lecture.
It was the weekend. Which meant no school. But unfortunately, it also meant way more work.
What I had to do today settled heavily in my stomach. I have to give Noel an answer today, I thought, as my chest tightened.
I didn't know what to do. Should I take the shield he was offering or stay in this tiny apartment and keep running myself into the ground? I couldn't decide.
I'll just wait until I see a sign. The universe has to give me something.
