Chapter 31 - Chapter 33 Wedding Plans and Hidden Shadows

The sun hung low over the estate, painting the walls gold as David and Precious moved among invitations, flowers, and carefully selected decorations. For the first time in weeks, the air felt light, almost ordinary, but a shadow lingered—a quiet whisper reminding them that danger never truly rested.

David held an invitation between his fingers, frowning. "We need to send these by tomorrow," he said. "But… something doesn't feel right. Ever since the river… I can't shake the feeling that someone is watching."

Precious placed a hand on his arm, her touch grounding him. "Let's not spoil this day before it even begins. Our wedding… it's supposed to be a celebration. The rest… we'll handle together."

Her words were soft, but David could feel the strength in them. They were building a life together, despite the shadows that had followed them through every twist of their families' history.

The Shadow of Sonko

Unseen in the streets nearby, Sonko moved with quiet purpose. He had already learned that the family was planning a wedding, a symbol of unity and hope—but he was never one to allow happiness to flourish without challenge. The market had been the beginning. The meeting with Kenty, seemingly accidental, had been carefully orchestrated. Sonko recognized in Kenty both opportunity and threat: a man hungry for control, clever, and capable of following plans with precision.

"Your sister is too happy," Sonko had said to Kenty when they first met in the bustling market. "And your family… they have forgotten what danger looks like. You could change that."

Kenty had laughed quietly, a low, restrained sound, hiding years of resentment. "She always thinks she can forgive everything," Kenty said. "But the past isn't that simple. She took everything from me. Everything I should have had. I can't… I won't let her forget."

Sonko nodded, his eyes sharp. "Then we remind her. Together."

It was a bond formed quietly, unseen by the rest of the family, one that promised to bring storms into the celebrations David and Precious dared to plan.

The Wedding Preparations

Inside the estate, the atmosphere was a mixture of excitement and careful control. Precious's father moved among the rooms, adjusting decorations, smiling, but ever watchful. He had long suspected that Kenty's return would stir old conflicts, and now, with Sonko's involvement, he realized the family's happiness was at risk.

Yet he allowed the preparations to continue. "They need this," he thought. "They need a moment of joy before the storm. But I must be ready… ready to intervene if shadows cross the threshold."

David and Precious worked together, placing flowers, arranging chairs, and laughing at small missteps that lightened the tension. For a few hours, life felt normal, and for a few hours, hope seemed stronger than fear.

Secrets Revealed

Later, as they reviewed the seating arrangements, David hesitated. "I… I need to know something," he said, looking at Precious. "How… how did Kenty meet Sonko? And why is he against your sister? Did your father know he's back… and that Sonko is involved?"

Precious paused, her eyes reflecting both pain and determination. "It's… complicated," she said. "Kenty… he's always been angry about what he lost. About recognition, inheritance, respect. When he saw Sonko… he found someone who could help him… someone who understood ambition and knew how to manipulate fear. My father suspected Kenty was back, yes, but he didn't know Sonko was part of it. Not until recently. And even now… he hopes to keep the worst from us, at least until we're ready."

David absorbed this silently, the weight of history and betrayal settling over him. "So our wedding… our joy… it's already threatened," he said, his voice quiet but firm.

Precious nodded. "Yes. But that's why we face it together. Shadows may come… but we have each other. And love… love cannot be broken by the past."

Foreshadowing the Storm

Meanwhile, Kenty watched from the distant hilltops, Sonko by his side. The market encounter had been the seed; now it was growing, ready to bloom at the perfect moment. "The wedding," Kenty said, voice low and almost reverent. "It's perfect. Everyone's guard is down. They think this day belongs to them."

Sonko smiled faintly. "And that's when we strike," he said. "Let the celebration begin… and let the reckoning follow."

Back in the estate, David and Precious clasped hands, unaware of the storm brewing just beyond the horizon. But in the quiet moments, they promised themselves one truth: together, they would face whatever came, no matter how deep the shadows ran.

The river outside reflected the first moonlight of evening, calm and peaceful… yet beneath its surface, currents twisted with secrets, waiting to sweep through lives, revealing truths, betrayal, and courage that would be tested as never before.
