Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 – The Bond That Shouldn’t Exist

Aria's body trembled as she knelt on the cold ground, her hands pressed against the earth as if it were the only thing keeping her from collapsing completely. The pain from the broken mate bonds still burned deep inside her chest, leaving her breath uneven and her mind spinning. Around her, the Moon Festival slowly returned to life. Wolves whispered to one another, some staring openly at her while others quickly looked away. A few laughed quietly, their cruel amusement cutting deeper than the rejection itself. The celebration that had once filled the clearing with joy now felt distant and hollow. Aria tried to steady herself, but every breath reminded her of the same terrible truth—both Alphas had rejected her without hesitation. To them, the bond meant nothing. To her, it had been everything.

Yet the strange voice inside her mind remained.

"So… the Alphas rejected the future Queen."

The words echoed again, calm and almost amused. Aria froze, her fingers digging into the dirt beneath her. Wolves had instincts that allowed them to sense danger or emotion, but this was something entirely different. The voice didn't feel like her wolf. It wasn't the familiar presence she had known since her awakening. This voice was older, deeper, carrying a weight that made her heart pound with uneasy curiosity. Aria slowly lifted her head, her silver eyes scanning the clearing as if she might somehow find the source of the voice among the crowd. But no one seemed to notice anything unusual. The wolves around her were too busy gossiping about what had just happened, whispering about the girl who had been publicly rejected by two powerful Alphas.

Aria pushed herself up slightly, ignoring the weakness in her legs. Her wolf stirred faintly inside her mind, confused and hurt by the broken bonds. Why would they reject us? the wolf murmured softly, its voice filled with pain. Aria didn't have an answer. The bond between mates was sacred among werewolves, chosen by the Moon Goddess herself. Rejecting a mate was rare and dangerous because it left scars that never truly healed. Yet Kael and Lucian had done it without hesitation, as if breaking fate itself meant nothing to them. Aria clenched her fists, trying to stop the tears threatening to fall. She refused to cry in front of the pack. She refused to give them the satisfaction of seeing her completely broken.

But then the strange warmth in her chest grew stronger.

At first it was subtle, like a small spark buried deep within her heart. But within seconds it spread through her entire body, pushing against the emptiness left behind by the shattered bonds. Aria gasped softly as the sensation intensified. It wasn't painful like the rejection had been. Instead, it felt powerful—ancient and alive, like something that had been sleeping inside her for years and had finally awakened. Her wolf reacted immediately, growling in confusion and excitement at the same time. What is that? it asked, clearly sensing the unfamiliar energy. Aria had no answer. She pressed a trembling hand against her chest, feeling the strange pulse growing stronger with every heartbeat.

"Interesting…"

The voice returned, clearer this time.

Aria's breath caught.

"You can feel it now," the voice continued quietly. "The power they were too blind to see."

Her heart raced as the words echoed through her mind. This wasn't her imagination. Something—or someone—was speaking to her. But how? And why now? Aria's gaze lifted toward the glowing full moon hanging above the forest. For a brief moment, the silver light seemed brighter than before, almost as if it were responding to the strange energy inside her. The warmth in her chest pulsed again, stronger this time, sending a ripple of energy through her body that made the air around her feel strangely heavy.

Aria struggled to stand, her legs shaking as she forced herself upright. The wolves around her continued whispering, but she barely heard them anymore. Her attention was focused entirely on the voice inside her mind. "Who… are you?" she whispered under her breath, hoping no one nearby would notice. For a moment, there was only silence. Then the voice answered slowly, its tone filled with quiet amusement.

"Someone who has been waiting a very long time."

A chill ran down Aria's spine.

Waiting… for her?

Before she could ask another question, the strange warmth inside her chest suddenly surged, sending a sharp pulse of energy through her veins. Aria gasped as the ground beneath her feet seemed to tremble slightly. The torches around the clearing flickered violently for a brief moment, drawing confused looks from several wolves nearby. Aria stared at her hands in shock as faint silver light shimmered across her skin for just a second before disappearing.

Her heart pounded harder than ever.

"What… was that?" she whispered.

The voice inside her mind gave a quiet laugh.

"That," it said slowly, "was only the beginning."

Aria's breath stopped as the voice continued, its tone suddenly darker and far more serious.

"Because the bond the Alphas rejected… was never the real one."
