Chapter 33 - Ch12- The Storm...

Chapter 12 – The Storm Within

It was just past seven in the evening when the group arrived at the library, books in hand, notes and laptops scattered across the tables. The hum of fluorescent lights filled the room, mingling with the faint rustle of paper and the occasional tap of keys. The storm outside had begun quietly, a distant drumbeat against the windows, almost easy to ignore.

The group settled in quickly. Cole, Ben, Daisy, Lyra, Ash, Kevin, Nova, Joong—they each claimed a section of the long oak table, arranging their notes and materials. Care remained in her corner, silently placing her bag beside her chair. Her gaze flicked from her phone to the window and back again, her expression unreadable. She didn't engage with the group's casual chatter, nor did she glance up when Cole whispered jokes to Ben. She just sat there, small and still, a quiet island amid the bustling group.

At first, everyone ignored her. They were content to spread out, to focus on their studies, assuming she was like always—distant, untouchable, absorbed in her own world.

Around 7:30 PM, the sound of a heavy slam made the entire group jump. The janitor, perhaps unaware of the late-night study session, had closed the library door forcefully. The lights flickered as the sudden movement disturbed the building's old wiring.

"Oh no…" Daisy muttered, looking at the door. "The janitor… he didn't know we were staying late."

Cole strode over immediately, checking the lock. "It's fine… just… don't panic. We can get it open." He tugged, but the door resisted.

Care's head lifted slightly from her phone, eyes narrowing at the sudden disruption. Her lips pressed together as the room's energy shifted. Panic, mild at first, rippled through the group.

"We'll have to stay the night," Lyra said softly, setting her bag down again. "Just… settle in. We'll manage."

The group nodded, trying to focus on their materials again, though unease lingered in the air. Thunder rumbled faintly in the distance, and a flash of lightning illuminated Care's pale, unreadable expression.

The storm outside was growing stronger, the wind whistling around the building, rattling the windowpanes. Rain began to strike the glass harder, loud enough to compete with the scribbling pens and typing laptops.

For nearly an hour, the group settled into their work. Notes were passed quietly, laptops clicked in concentration, and every so often, someone glanced at Care. She remained distant, her small frame hunched slightly, watching her phone, barely reacting to the storm outside.

Then it began. The flicker. A sudden dimming of the fluorescent lights, a sharp beep as the backup emergency lights kicked in. For a second, the library seemed suspended, caught between shadows and light.

Lyra noticed first: Care's chair was empty. The bag still rested at the corner, but the girl herself was gone.

"She's… gone?" Daisy whispered.

Kevin moved to the corner. "Maybe she just… went to the restroom?"

Nova shook her head slowly. "No. This isn't her. Look at the way she left her bag."

Before anyone could react further, a sharp pounding sounded against the door. The sound was frantic, erratic, desperate.

"She's at the door!" Lyra said, voice cracking slightly. "But… it's not normal."

Cole's eyes narrowed. "Move. Now."

The group rushed across the library to find Care, and what they saw made their stomachs drop. She was small, drenched from the storm that had blown through a vent near the door, her hands pounding violently against the locked wood. Her frame trembled, shoulders rising sharply with each shallow, ragged breath.

Lyra reached her first, placing a hand on Care's shoulder. Care flinched, gasping through the shallow breaths.

"What's… happening?" Daisy asked, kneeling beside her.

Care's eyes were wide, panicked. She tried to speak but only managed small, harsh inhales. The group quickly understood: it was an asthma attack.

Cole barked sharply, "Where's the inhaler?!"

Care's trembling fingers pointed at her bag in the corner, but her motions were unsteady. Ben grabbed the bag, but the inhaler was missing. His face drained of color.

"She… she's fainting!" Ben shouted, panic seeping into his voice.

Care's body shook violently. Lyra and Ash pressed against her back, whispering soft reassurances, trying to keep her upright. Nova hovered nearby, tense, scanning the room for anything that could help. Daisy knelt at her side, holding her small, wet hands, her own eyes wide with fear.

Cole grabbed his phone and headphones. "Music. She needs music," he said. The group exchanged questioning glances, but Cole didn't wait. He slid the single headphone toward Care. She struggled, but her fingers finally curled around it, the first sign of cooperation in moments that felt endless.

Lyra brushed wet hair from her face. "You're not alone," she whispered. "Not now. Not ever."

Care's trembling slowed, but she was still faint and fragile. Cole carefully lowered her to the library floor, propping her head on his lap, the soft music flowing into her ear.

The storm outside mirrored the storm inside her: thunder clapped violently, rain battered the windows, and lightning illuminated the tense, worried faces around her.

"She's… fragile," Daisy whispered, almost to herself. "The Care we know… we didn't see this side."

Lyra and Ash kept close, whispering constant reassurances. Nova's eyes never left Care, tense, calculating, protective. Ben's hands trembled slightly as he rested near her, finally understanding the depth of the silent storms she had weathered alone for years.

Cole's hand rested gently on her arm, voice low and steady: "Stay with me, Care. Just breathe. Don't leave me now."

Finally, Care's body relaxed slightly, the music calming her trembling. Her shallow breaths became more even, her shivers slowly subsiding. She slipped into a fragile sleep on the library floor, still shivering, still drenched, but finally quiet.

The group huddled around her, silent and vigilant. Their earlier judgments, frustrations, and misunderstandings seemed to dissolve in the presence of this delicate, sleeping figure. They saw her as she truly was—not the distant, arrogant girl they had misjudged, but a fragile human, bearing silent scars and hidden storms.

"She… she's still here," Lyra whispered, voice tight with tears. "The Care we judged… was only the surface."

Ben nodded. "And now we see. We'll be here. All of us. Always."

Daisy leaned close, voice trembling. "She gave herself to us… and we never even realized. The storm she carried… all those years… it was inside her."

Cole's jaw tightened, hand resting lightly on Care's small frame. "No more hiding. From now, we're not letting her fight alone. Not ever."

For the first time, the group understood what it meant to truly see Care. The storm outside raged on, but inside the library, a fragile peace settled. They didn't speak; they didn't move. They simply watched, silent guardians to the girl who had finally allowed herself to be seen.

And in that moment, they knew something fundamental: the untouchable Care was not untouchable at all. She was human. She was fragile. She was strong, yes—but her strength had been forged in solitude, in hidden storms. And now, they would be there..
