Asta and Yami had an audience with the Wizard King, then followed the mushroom-haired Marx to the interrogation room.
The eight Magic Knight Captains had gathered.
With the death of the Crimson Lion captain, they were missing the one who used to mediate their disputes, as well as their most hot-blooded member.
Jack clicked his tongue and licked his arm, "Now that the hot-blooded captain is gone, you all look completely unmotivated."
The atmosphere was painfully awkward.
As the youngest here, I have to lighten things up.
Rill, captain of the Aqua Deer, pulled out his brush and painted red eyeshadow across his face.
"Can none of you say anything? Get fired up! The Wizard King definitely has something important to tell us."
The captains' mana immediately pressed down on him.
Yami, with the shortest temper, drew his sword.
"You bastard, what are you acting so cocky for? Just because you're the youngest captain in history, you think you can boss us around?"
So scary. Did I mess up?
Jack sneered, "Yami, are you picking a fight because the Black Bulls are still in last place?"
"You damn mantis, want me to cut you?"
"My Severing Magic could use a test subject."
"Enough," Nozel said coldly as he adjusted his bangs. "Show the dignity expected of a captain."
My friend, rest assured. Now that you're gone, I will maintain order and avenge you, Fuegoleon.
Yami exhaled a puff of smoke. "As expected of a royal. Those weird braids in your bangs don't block your vision?"
How crude. And yet... why did I fall for this man?
Charlotte stiffened internally.
Stay calm. You are the untouchable Blue Rose captain.
Yami is so manly. I love him so much.
Yami glanced at her, "What are you staring at, you thorny, poker-faced queen?"
Charlotte forced herself to respond calmly, "I hope you can show some manners, you rude man."
The atmosphere worsened again.
It seems I'm the only one who can endure this. I, Rill, will do my best for the Magic Knights.
"You brat, don't try to copy me."
Rill froze mid–Yami-style makeup, sweat pouring down his face.
I'm dead. How did he notice?
Marx cleared his throat, "Everyone, please calm down. The Wizard King requests your presence. Please proceed to the interrogation room."
Yami scratched his head, "Mushroom-head, why didn't you say that earlier?"
"This... please just come quickly."
"Yami, have some basic manners. Let's go," Nozel said.
"Got it, Captain Weird-Bangs."
Interrogation Room
"Now that everyone is here," the Wizard King began, his tone serious, "I have unfortunate news. There is a traitor among the Magic Knight Captains."
"I hope they step forward on their own. I would rather not repeat the testimony we just heard."
"What? A traitor?" Jack grinned viciously. "I'll slice them apart."
"Shut up and listen, you dead mantis," Yami muttered.
The Wizard King laughed lightly, but his voice carried weight, "I don't want things to turn ugly. If the traitor steps forward now, I can still guarantee your life."
Silence filled the room.
"It seems cooperation isn't an option. Marx, begin."
Memory Magic: Absolute Memory
Two inverted hourglasses appeared above the captured Eye of the Midnight Sun members.
"There is still a chance," the Wizard King added. "I don't want to lose another captain."
So that's why Asta was brought here, to break the protection magic.
Yami narrowed his eyes.
"Proceed," the Wizard King ordered.
Marx nodded, "Who betrayed the Clover Kingdom?"
The two prisoners spoke in unison, "It was the captain of the Purple Orcas, Gueldre Poizot."
"Slander!" Gueldre shouted, his greasy body trembling. "I would never betray my country!"
Yami scoffed, "Didn't expect it to be you, Ham-face. I heard you were already making money through shady methods."
"That's nonsense! You're just jealous our squad has more stars!"
Marx smiled gently, "Captain Gueldre, Absolute Memory shows only the truth. If you still doubt it, I can personally examine your memories."
Gueldre's expression stiffened.
If he sees my memories, everything will be exposed.
My deals with corrupt nobles, exploiting commoners, reselling magic items, even helping the Eye of the Midnight Sun...
No. I have to escape.
"I'll go find the proof myself. Goodbye!"
Permeation Creation Magic: Invisible Great Mage
His entire body vanished.
Under my magic, I can phase through everything. This is perfect. I'm untouchable.
Permeation Creation Magic: Invisible Army
Invisible soldiers filled the room.
"Damn it," someone cursed.
Yami took a drag of his cigarette, "Relax. We've got a trump card."
"I can't sense his mana. He escaped," another captain said.
Royal Capital Corridor
Gueldre laughed as he ran, "I made it out. As expected of my magic."
A massive sword suddenly slammed into his face, sending him crashing.
"Impossible! Someone broke my magic!"
Asta stood before him, gripping his sword tightly.
"I looked up to the Magic Knight Captains," Asta said firmly. "Aren't you supposed to protect people?"
"Working with the Eye of the Midnight Sun for your own selfish reasons... you don't deserve to be a captain."
Anti-Magic... that brat again.
Gueldre snarled, "You chased me alone? Are you trying to die?"
Painting Magic: Spring of Repose
Colorful swirls spread across the floor, binding Gueldre in place.
Rill beamed, "Got him! This is amazing! Asta, can we be friends? The other captains are kind of hard to deal with."
Asta grinned, "Sure, Captain Rill."
"Just call me Rill."
Suddenly, a rough hand grabbed the back of Rill's neck.
"Who are you calling hard to deal with?"
Rill froze.
Captain Yami... and the others are here too.
The Wizard King stepped in, smiling, "Yami, let him go. He's still young. Now that it's settled, everyone return to your squads."
The captains dispersed.
Marx began interrogating Gueldre, uncovering one crime after another.
Selling kingdom mages, trafficking magic items, colluding with enemies. Even dying ten times wouldn't be enough for someone like him.
"Yami, do you know why I asked you to stay?" the Wizard King asked.
"I don't," Yami replied lazily.
"The Eye of the Midnight Sun is searching for Magic Stones. One of them was the pendant Fuegoleon always wore."
"The attack on the capital was to obtain it. They possess a stone tablet that stores Magic Stones."
"There are still three missing. Once they gather them all, they claim they can return to their true form."
"No matter what, we cannot allow that."
Yami listened quietly.
"I want you to go to the Underwater Temple and retrieve one of the Magic Stones. I don't trust the other squads with this."
Yeah, right. More like we're the only idiots honest enough not to screw it up.
Yami scratched his head, "Anything else?"
"If you encounter any unusual magic, report back to me."
Yami stared at the Wizard King and took a slow drag of his cigarette.
He's the boss. I really need to hold back from hitting him.
