Chapter 2 - The Secret of the Map

Ethan barely slept that night.

The old parchment map lay open across his desk, illuminated by the faint glow of a lantern. Every line, every symbol, every strange marking seemed to whisper a secret waiting to be discovered.

Outside, Raven Hollow was quiet, but Ethan's mind was racing.

The Forbidden Treasure.

The words echoed in his thoughts.

His grandfather had hidden this map for a reason. But why? And what exactly was the treasure hidden deep inside the mountains?

Ethan traced his finger along the map again. The path started in Raven Hollow, passed through the Darkwood Forest, and ended somewhere in the jagged peaks of the Blackstone Mountains.

But there were symbols drawn along the path—symbols he didn't understand.

"Maybe Maya will know," Ethan whispered.

If there was one person in Raven Hollow who loved ancient mysteries as much as he did, it was Maya Rodriguez.

The next morning, Ethan hurried across town with the rolled map hidden inside his jacket.

The sun had barely risen when he reached Maya's house.

He knocked on the door.

A moment later, Maya opened it, still half-asleep.

"Ethan?" she said, rubbing her eyes. "It's barely morning. Did the world end or something?"

"Not exactly," Ethan said. "But you need to see this."

Curiosity quickly replaced Maya's sleepiness.

They moved to the kitchen table as Ethan carefully unrolled the map.

For a moment, Maya just stared.

"Where did you get this?" she asked.

"My grandfather's attic."

Maya leaned closer, studying the markings.

"This isn't just a map," she said slowly.

"These symbols… they're ancient. I've seen something like them in old history books."

Ethan's eyes widened.

"So you can read them?"

"Some of them."

She pointed to a group of strange markings near the mountains.

"This symbol means danger. And this one… it means guardian."

Ethan remembered the warning written at the bottom.

"Those who seek the treasure must face the guardian of the mountain."

Maya's expression grew serious.

"Ethan… whatever this treasure is, someone clearly didn't want it to be found."

Before Ethan could respond, the back door suddenly burst open.

"Why are you two whispering like secret agents?"

It was Lucas Bennett.

He walked into the kitchen carrying a bag of pastries and stopped when he saw the map.

"Okay… what's that?"

Ethan looked at Maya.

Maya looked at Ethan.

Then Ethan sighed.

"Lucas," he said, "how would you feel about going on the biggest adventure of our lives?"

Lucas raised an eyebrow.

"That depends," he said. "Does it involve treasure?"

Ethan turned the map so Lucas could see the title written at the top.

Lucas read the words aloud.

"The… Forbidden Treasure."

His eyes widened.

"Okay," Lucas said slowly. "Now you definitely have my attention."

But none of them noticed the figure standing outside the window.

A tall man dressed in black stood silently beside the street, watching the house.

His cold eyes focused on the map through the glass.

The man pulled out a small communication device.

"I've found it," he whispered.

"The map exists."

A deep voice responded from the other side.

"Good," the voice said.

"Follow them. Do not lose them."

The man smiled darkly.

"Yes… Mr. Draven."

And the hunt for the Forbidden Treasure had officially begun.
