Friedrich?
When was the last time she thought about him?
"No, mother."
Her mother surprised her by slipping an arm around her waist and guiding her to the bed.
"I know you better than anything else, Everetta. And even more than that, I know the look you have on your face - it is the look of a woman who was served a rejection by her betrothed."
Close…
Everetta adjusted on the bed, squirming slightly at how close they were.
What would it matter if she told a few white lies?
"Friedrich and I… broke our engagement…" The words tumbled out smoother than she had thought they would.
Her mother did not gasp nor did she appear shocked.
"Who broke it? Or was it mutual?"
If she said she did, her mother would want to know why…
"He did… because of a misunderstanding we had. But his father has assured me that things would be amended." She lied between her teeth.
