It was much too late to take back her words. He had heard them…
"You say the oddest things." He said.
Her smile vanished.
"Forgive me… that must have sounded odd. I only meant to say that I cannot conscientiously harm another human being for any reason at all."
He nodded, not meeting her gaze.
Of course, she must sound like a fool to him…
Eve picked up another biscuit and bit into it.
"But… do you eat biscuits without any honey in them?" She said, mostly to change the subject.
He just continued reading his book.
Then, when she thought he would not answer, he said, "My dietary preferences should be the least of your concerns."
She smiled.
Yet after that, she fell silent, eating as silently as she possibly could.
When she was done with all the biscuits on the plate, she set the tea cup down and whispered, "Thank you."
He glanced at the empty plate of biscuits and then at her, his brow slightly arching.
