"Find what, Lady Whitmore?"
"The string for the…" She trailed off.
That wasn't Candace's voice.
It could not be…
She glanced over her shoulder just to be certain.
It indeed was him.
In flesh and blood.
"Theodore? What are you doing here?" The name slipped out before she could bridle her thoughts.
"My brother asked me to fetch you."
Oh.
Of course that would be the only reason he would come to her chambers in the first place.
And he had left the door open.
How did she tell him that she could not follow him without making it seem as though she disregarded the wishes of the guests waiting below.
"Well, I do not know how best to say this…" She placed her palm at the base of her neck. "My pearl necklace… the string came apart… so Candace went to find another string for me."
When she met his gaze, he wasn't looking at her… or at least not her face. But his cold stare made her shudder inwards.
"Why can you not wear another necklace?"
