Chapter 5 - Fangs of Oblivion

The violet light pulsing in Do hyun's left eye cast a strange glow over the wet asphalt of the alley. The air around him grew heavy, pressing down on the group like a physical weight. Cypher dropped his device to the ground, clutching his ears as a high pitched whine filled the space. The sound was not audible to the human ear alone; it was a frequency that vibrated in the teeth and bones of everyone present. The shattered remains of the rings on Do hyun's fingers began to swirl in the air, defying gravity. They spun faster and faster, merging into two distinct shapes that glowed with a menacing purple hue.

Cypher shouted: "My equipment is frying! Turn it off!"

Do hyun did not respond. He was no longer fully present in the moment. His mind was adrift in a sea of crimson rage, guided only by the instinct to destroy the threat before him. The swirling metal solidified into two jagged daggers, their blades resembling cracked obsidian infused with lightning. They hovered in his open palms for a second before the handles slammed into his grip with a sound like a closing vault. The daggers hummed with a frequency that makes Cypher's devices scream static. The shadows around Do hyun surged upward, wrapping around the blades and extending their reach like extra limbs. He looked at the creature, which was still struggling against the shadowy bonds holding it to the wall.

Okasaki asked: "Is that... is that him?"

Me ri shook her head slowly, tears still wet on her cheeks. She wanted to say that it was Do hyun, but the figure standing in the center of the alley did not feel like the friend she knew. The posture was wrong, too predatory, too still. The human Do hyun fidgeted and slouched; this creature stood with the rigid perfection of a statue carved for war. She took a step forward, her instinct to help overriding her fear, but Yoo han grabbed her shoulder firmly. Yoo han knew that intervening now would be suicide. They were witnesses to a transformation that belonged to a different world, one they were not equipped to understand.

Yoo han said: "Stay back. Do not move."

Do hyun moved. He did not run; he vanished. One moment he was standing near the puddle, and the next he was behind the bound creature. The speed was unnatural, bypassing the laws of physics that governed the human body. The left dagger slashed upward in a smooth arc, while the right dagger thrust downward. There was no resistance from the creature's bark like skin. The blades cut through the shadow flesh as if it were wet paper. A spray of dark ichor erupted from the wounds, sizzling where it touched the ground. The creature shrieked, a sound that was cut short as Do hyun spun around it, a blur of violence and light.

Me ri whispered: "Stop... please stop..."

Do hyun did not hear her. The hunger in his blood demanded completion. He severed the creature's arm at the shoulder, and the limb dissolved into smoke before it hit the ground. He did not pause to admire the work. He stepped into the creature's guard, driving both daggers into its chest. The violet light flared blindingly bright, illuminating the brick walls of the alley in stark relief. The creature convulsed, its form destabilizing as the daggers drained its essence. Do hyun twisted the blades, and the sound of tearing energy echoed like thunder. He was efficient and merciless, dismembering the beast with a precision that suggested he had done this a thousand times before.

Cypher asked: "How is he doing that?"

Yoo han did not answer. He was watching Do hyun's face, or what was left of it. The human side was expressionless, while the demonic side was twisted in a grimace of pure ecstasy. The shadows were feeding on the kill, growing thicker and darker with every drop of ichor spilled. The alley was no longer just a street in the city; it had become an altar for an ancient ritual. Do hyun pulled the daggers free, and the creature collapsed into a pile of ash and fading embers. The silence returned, heavier than before, broken only by the hum of the weapons in Do hyun's hands. He stood over the remains, his chest heaving as the violet light began to fade from his veins.

Okasaki said: "It is done."

Do hyun turned slowly to face them. The daggers dissolved into mist, flowing back into his skin until only the glowing runes remained on his hands. The armor of shadows receded, peeling away like burnt paper until he was just a boy in bloody clothes again. The transformation reversed, but the damage was done. The left side of his face remained scarred with dark markings, and the eye still glowed faintly, though the fire was dimming. He looked at his friends, and for the first time, confusion replaced the rage in his expression. He looked at his hands, then at the ash on the ground, and finally at Me ri. He took a step toward them, but his leg gave way.

Do hyun whispered: "I did not... mean to..."

He collapsed forward, hitting the ground with a dull thud. The energy that had sustained him vanished instantly, leaving him hollow and unconscious. The friends rushed forward immediately, dropping to their knees beside him. Me ri checked his pulse, her hands trembling violently. It was weak, but it was there. Yoo han scanned the perimeter, ensuring no other threats were approaching while Cypher tried to restart his damaged equipment. Okasaki lifted Do hyun's upper body, supporting his weight with a gentleness that contradicted his size. They were alive, but the dynamic of their group had shifted irrevocably in the span of a few minutes.

Cypher said: "He is stable, but his energy levels are critical."

Me ri cried: "We need to get him out of here. People will hear the noise."

Yoo han nodded and stood up, taking charge of the situation. He gestured for Okasaki to carry Do hyun. They moved quickly, leaving the ash and the blood behind in the alley. As they turned the corner to leave the scene, none of them looked back at the pile of remains. They wanted to forget what they had seen, but the image of Do hyun wielding those blades was burned into their minds. The ordinary world they knew was gone, replaced by a reality of shadows and blood. They reached the main street where the lights were still functioning, blending into the crowd of late night pedestrians to escape unnoticed.

Back in the alley, the wind picked up, swirling the ash into a small vortex. The darkness remained thick, clinging to the walls where the fight had taken place. From the pile of dissolving monster remains, a wisp of black smoke detached itself. It did not float away into the night like the rest of the creature. Instead, it slithered across the ground, moving with purpose against the wind. It reached the spot where Do hyun had fallen, lingering on the bloodstain he had left behind. The wisp coiled around itself, forming a small, shapeless figure that bowed low toward the empty space.

The last shadow of the dead monster crawls toward his feet as if bowing.
