Chapter 4 - Crimson Baptism

The voice that whispered his name vibrated through the pavement and up into Do hyun's broken bones. It was not a sound heard with ears, but a frequency felt in the marrow. The creature lingered over him for a moment longer, savoring the scent of his fear and blood, before it slowly turned its head toward the alley entrance. Me ri stood frozen there, her hands covering her mouth, tears streaming down her face as she watched Do hyun kneeling in the pool of his own life. The monster moved with unnatural speed, bypassing the broken boy to snatch the girl who mattered most to him.

Me ri screamed: "Let go of me!"

The shadow beast wrapped a clawed hand around her throat, lifting her feet off the ground as if she weighed nothing. Her fingers scrabbled against the charred bark of its arm, leaving no marks. Do hyun felt something snap inside his chest, louder than the bone in his wrist. It was not physical pain this time, but a primal rage that drowned out the agony in his shoulder. He tried to stand, but his legs buckled under him. He dragged himself forward using his good arm, leaving a trail of blood on the asphalt. The rings on his fingers began to glow white hot, searing his skin with a pain that was worse than the broken bones.

Do hyun shouted: "Put her down!"

The creature did not even look back. It tightened its grip on Me ri, who was gasping for air, her face turning pale in the darkness. Do hyun clenched his fists, the metal bands digging into his flesh. Smoke began to rise from his hands as the heat intensified. He could feel the seals his mother had placed on him years ago beginning to fail. The protection was becoming a prison, and the thing inside him was scratching at the bars. He looked at Me ri struggling, her eyes locking with his in a silent plea for help that he was too weak to answer.

Yoo han yelled: "Do hyun, stop! You will burn your hands off!"

Do hyun ignored him. He could not stop. The rage was a fuel that burned hotter than the metal. He focused all his will on the rings, demanding them to break, demanding the power to flow. The pain was blinding, turning the world into a haze of red and black. He gritted his teeth, blood dripping from his bitten lip onto the glowing metal. The vibration became a scream, a high pitched whine that shattered the silence of the alley. The creature paused, sensing the shift in energy, and turned its head slightly toward the boy on the ground.

The first crack in the ring drew a thin line of violet light across the alley.

It started on the index finger of his left hand. A hairline fracture appeared in the silver, leaking pure energy that hissed like steam. The light was not warm; it was cold and heavy, pressing against the shadows around them. Do hyun watched the crack spread, spiraling around the band like a vein of lightning. The pain in his hand vanished, replaced by a numbness that spread up his arm. He felt something ancient waking up in the blood beneath his skin, something that had been sleeping since birth. The creature dropped Me ri, realizing the threat had shifted from the girl to the boy.

Me ri coughed: "Do hyun, run!"

Do hyun did not run. He stood up. His broken shoulder hung limp, but he did not feel the pain anymore. The violet light from the ring illuminated his face, casting sharp shadows across his features. The second ring on his right hand shattered completely, exploding into fine dust that floated in the air like glitter. The force of the explosion knocked the creature back a step. Do hyun looked at his hands, where the metal had been. There were no wounds, only glowing runes etched into his skin that pulsed with the same violet light. The darkness beneath his feet began to ripple like water disturbed by a stone.

Cypher shouted: "The energy readings are critical!"

The ground beneath Do hyun split open. It was not the earth breaking, but the shadow itself tearing apart. From the fissure in the darkness, a cold wind erupted, carrying the scent of old blood and iron. The shadow beast hissed, backing away toward the wall. It recognized the power now. This was not just a half blood waking up; this was a king returning to his throne. Do hyun felt the shadows reaching up to him, not to attack, but to bow. They coiled around his legs, forming a armor of living darkness that hardened into plates. His breathing slowed, becoming rhythmic and deep.

Do hyun said: "You should have killed me when you had the chance."

His voice was different. It layered over itself, sounding like two people speaking in unison. The human tone was there, but beneath it was a growl that belonged to the abyss. He took a step forward, and the shadow armor moved with him, silent and fluid. The creature lunged again, desperate to finish the job before the transformation completed. Do hyun did not dodge. He raised his left hand, and the shadows around him surged forward like a wave. They collided with the beast, wrapping around its limbs and dragging it down. The monster shrieked, a sound that shattered the remaining windows in the alley.

Okasaki groaned: "What... is happening..."

Do hyun did not look at his friend. He focused entirely on the beast struggling in the grip of the shadows. He walked closer, his movements predatory and precise. The violet light in his veins spread to his neck, climbing up toward his face. He could feel his humanity slipping away, replaced by a cold calculation that viewed the monster as nothing more than fuel. The rings were gone, but the constraint remained in his mind. He had to decide whether to stop or to let the hunger take over. He looked at Me ri, who was huddled on the ground, watching him with terror in her eyes.

Do hyun asked: "Are you afraid of me?"

Me ri did not answer. She could not. The face looking at her was partially his, but the left side was changing. The skin there was darkening, cracking like dry earth to reveal something glowing beneath. Do hyun reached out toward the creature, which was now immobilized by the shadows. He grabbed its head with his bare hand. The violet light flared intensely, illuminating the entire alleyway in a brief, blinding flash. The creature stopped struggling. It went limp, its energy being drained into Do hyun's palm. The process was silent and horrific, like watching a flower wilt in fast forward.

Yoo han whispered: "He is absorbing it."

Do hyun dropped the remains of the creature, which dissolved into ash before hitting the ground. He stood alone in the center of the alley, the shadows receding slightly but still clinging to him like a cloak. He raised his head, looking at the group. The left side of his face was no longer human. The skin was red and scaled, and the eye was gone. In its place was a orb of pure violet fire that burned without heat. He blinked, and the fire pulsed. He walked toward a puddle of rainwater near the curb, drawn by a reflection he needed to see. The friends watched in silence, too afraid to move or speak.

Do hyun's left eye ignited and he doesn't recognize the face reflected in the monster's gaze.
