Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Open File

The Mountain Pass of the Third Tier did not end in stone. It ended in a drop.

A three-thousand-foot vertical precipice carved from dark obsidian basalt overlooked the Mid-Tier Planetary Sector: The Azure Grid. Below, under the cold light of the twin moons, the landscape didn't resemble natural earth. The terrain was laid out in vast, alternating, twenty-mile squares of glowing silver soil and sunken obsidian trenches—a continental chessboard mapped across two thousand square miles of planetary crust.

Floating above the grid were massive, island-sized mana conduits, hummed with localized anti-grav fields that fed raw, spiritual ether down into the planetary ley-lines below.

Itachi stood at the very edge of the precipice, his black tunic whipping in the high-altitude wind.

[Location: Boundary Threshold — Sector 3 to Sector 2]

[Territorial Grade: Mid-Tier Planetary Grid]

[Environmental Rule: Absolute Spatial Vectors Active]

[Promotion Progress: Rank 1 Pawn — 85% to Rank Crossing]

Behind him, the small bronze scout drone hovered three inches off the dirt, its optical lens clicking furiously as it processed the sheer scale of the territory stretching out to the horizon.

"Master Itachi," the drone's speaker crackled, its voice small against the roaring wind. "We've cleared the outer perimeter. Sector 3's regional node is officially unanchored after Bishop Eric's core deletion. But look at the tactical readout for the central valley..."

A faint, amber holographic projection flared from the drone's lens, mapping out the territory directly below the mountain pass.

A straight, uninterrupted channel of glowing silver squares ran through the very center of the Azure Grid, stretching fifty miles directly toward the secondary spire city of Castell-8. It was a completely vacant, unfortified vector—an Open File.

In classical geometry, an open file was a high-speed highway for heavy pieces. In planetary warfare, it was an invitation to an ambush.

"An open line with zero frontline obstruction," Itachi observed, his golden eyes narrowing as he scanned the fifty-mile stretch of silver soil. "No defensive pawns. No stationary barricades. No mana shields."

"It's a trap, right?" the drone asked nervously. "It's way too clean. The Upper Board knows we just crossed the mountain pass. They shouldn't be leaving an entire vector unguarded."

"It isn't an oversight," Itachi deadpanned, his voice completely flat. "It is a tactical bait. An open file is only an advantage if you control the back rank. If you don't, stepping onto it simply isolates your piece."

He didn't hesitate. He took a single step off the three-thousand-foot obsidian cliff.

WHOOSH.

Gravity seized his frame, plunging him down toward the glowing silver floor of the Azure Grid at terminal velocity. Wind roared in his ears, ripping at his cuffs and pressing his tunic tight against his chest.

Three hundred feet above the silver dirt, Itachi didn't panic. He extended his right hand, pointing his carbon-steel rod straight at the ground.

[Skill Activated: Mass Redistribution (Vector Compensation)]

The downward kinetic force of his three-thousand-foot fall wasn't canceled; it was absorbed and redirected sideways into a sharp, horizontal glide. He hit the silver dirt on a clean, low-angle slide, his boots cutting two shallow, smoking grooves into the soil before coming to a dead stop in the middle of the central square.

TAP.

The moment his soles settled onto the silver earth, the ground beneath his feet hummed with a deep, resonant frequency.

[Square Occupied: File-d, Rank-4 (Neutral Territory)]

[Territorial Control: 0.001%]

[Alert: Spatial Coordinates Broadcasted to Sector 2 Array]

The air across the fifty-mile open file went dead quiet. The wind stopped. The ambient mana floating in the atmosphere froze into rigid, geometric crystals that drifted downward like glass dust.

From the dark, jagged cliffs surrounding the left flank of the file, a low, metallic chime echoed across the valley—not the deep bell of a Bishop, but the sharp, rhythmic clack-clack of heavy iron hooves against stone.

CLACK-CLACK. CLACK-CLACK.

Itachi didn't turn his head. He adjusted his sleeves, his golden eyes fixed on the empty space fifty yards down the line.

"They didn't send a line unit," Itachi noted softly.

Out of the shadow of the western cliffs stepped a figure that defied standard linear geometry.

It stood eight feet tall, encased in sleek, midnight-blue plate armor decorated with silver filigree. Its head was not human—it was a heavy, metallic horse skull forged from dark star-steel, its eye sockets burning with two violent, cold blue fires. Instead of a standard weapon, it carried a massive, curved executioner's scythe, the blade vibrating at thirty thousand hertz.

[Target Identified: Knight-Major Vane (Level 45)]

[Class Authority: Knight-Rank Vector (Non-Linear Mobility)]

[Special Property: Phase-Jump / Geometry Bypass]

Knight-Major Vane didn't stand in the file. He stood two squares to the left and one square up—a classic, off-axis threat positioning.

"Pawn," the Knight's voice echoed through the valley, sounding like two grinding tectonic plates overlaid with a metallic resonance. "You walk down an open file as if the board belongs to you. You operate on simple straight lines. Forward. Backward. Linear logic."

The Knight raised his heavy scythe, the star-steel blade cutting through the air with a high-pitched, spatial whine.

"A Knight does not respect linear space," Vane hissed, his burning blue optical fires flaring. "I do not need an open file to reach your square. I jump over your lines. I ignore your barriers. I strike from the blind spot of your geometry."

Itachi stood in the exact center of the d4 square, his carbon-steel rod resting loosely at his side. His expression remained entirely unbothered, his pulse steady at fifty-four beats per minute.

"Non-linear movement is arrogant," Itachi deadpanned. "It relies entirely on the assumption that the landing square is safe."

"The landing square is wherever I choose it to be!" Vane roared.

SHIVER.

The Knight-Major vanished.

He didn't slide across the dirt. He didn't leave a speed blur. He completely bypassed the intervening spatial coordinates, his eight-hundred-pound frame dissolving into a dark, L-shaped spatial ripple that vanished from the physical spectrum entirely.

[Warning: Non-Linear Attack Initiated]

[Target Trajectory: Off-Axis Jump (L-Vector)]

[Targeting Coordinate: Blind Spot (Behind Left Shoulder)]

In less than a hundredth of a second, the dark spatial ripple tore open directly behind Itachi's left shoulder. Eight hundred pounds of star-steel armor materialized out of thin air, the heavy scythe already mid-swing in a horizontal arc designed to sever Itachi's spine and core in a single, unblockable stroke.

To any standard unit, an attack originating from outside the linear line of sight was an immediate, fatal check.

Itachi didn't look back.

He didn't turn around to block with his rod. Instead, he took half a step backward with his right foot, pivoting his body precisely twelve degrees to the right while driving the heel of his boot into the silver soil.

[Skill Sync: Pawn Block (Interposition)]

[Rule Applied: Control of the Adjacent Square]

CLANG!

The massive, thirty-thousand-hertz scythe blade didn't hit flesh. It struck the tip of Itachi's carbon-steel rod, which Itachi had casually tucked behind his own back without looking—pinning the vibrating blade against the side of his own hip at the exact point of zero kinetic torque.

The sheer force of the eight-hundred-pound Knight's arrival blew a twenty-foot crater into the silver dirt, but Itachi's frame remained perfectly upright, his left hand still tucked casually inside his tunic pocket.

Knight-Major Vane's blue optical fires flared in sudden, shock-filled erratic pulses. "What... You blocked an off-axis phase jump without turning around?!"

Itachi slowly turned his head, his cold, golden eyes locking onto the Knight's metallic horse skull from three inches away.

"Your movement is L-shaped," Itachi said, his deep voice slicing through the ringing metallic echo of the block. "Two steps in one direction, one step at a right angle. It is unpredictable to an amateur. To a mathematician, it is simply a fixed matrix with three potential landing coordinates."

He tightened his grip on the carbon-steel rod.

"And you picked the coordinate I reserved for you."
