Chapter 4: The Meeting
The Morning After
Jay woke to sunlight and panic.
Not just from the sun streaming through Keifer's floor-to-ceiling windows.
But from her phone.
Buzzing endlessly on the nightstand.
She grabbed it.
Squinted at the screen.
Percy: WHERE ARE YOU
Percy: YOU DIDN'T COME HOME LAST NIGHT
Percy: JAY I SWEAR TO GOD
Percy: ARIES IS PACING
Percy: WE'RE COMING TO FIND YOU
Percy: GIVE US THE ADDRESS
"Oh no."
She sat up too fast.
Her head spun.
Her heart raced.
Beside her, Keifer stirred.
Opened those storm-gray eyes.
Looked at her.
"Hey," he murmured.
Sleepy.
Soft.
Jay's stomach flipped.
Hey?
He says hey like this is normal.
Like waking up together is normal.
It wasn't normal.
Nothing about this was normal.
"I have to go," she whispered.
"My brothers.
They're freaking out.
I never stay out.
I never—"
She stopped.
Because Keifer was smiling.
Small.
Amused.
"Go," he said.
"Before they send a search party.
But Jay?"
She paused.
Looked at him.
"Last night was..."
He trailed off.
Searching for words.
"Something.
I don't know what.
But something."
Jay's heart did something complicated.
Flutter.
Crack.
Flutter again.
"Yeah," she whispered.
"Something."
She didn't know what that meant.
Didn't know what they were.
Didn't know if last night was a one-time thing or the start of something.
Neither did he.
They were both confused.
Both feeling too much.
Both too scared to name it.
---
Two Hours Later
Jay walked into her apartment.
Hair messy.
Clothes from yesterday.
Eyes wide.
Percy was on her instantly.
"WHERE WERE YOU?
WE CALLED A HUNDRED TIMES!
WE THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD!"
Aries stood behind him.
Arms crossed.
Face calm but eyes worried.
"Jay.
Talk.
Now."
Jay held up her hands.
"I'm fine.
I'm safe.
I just...
I stayed at a friend's place.
That's all."
Percy's eyes narrowed.
"Friend?
What friend?
You don't have friends we don't know."
Jay opened her mouth.
Closed it.
She couldn't explain.
Didn't know how.
Aries studied her.
Too observant.
Too smart.
"Jay.
Who?
She shook her head.
"Can we not do this right now?
Please?
I'm tired.
I just want to shower."
Percy looked at Aries.
Aries looked at Percy.
The look.
The one that meant they'd talk about this later.
"Fine," Aries said quietly.
"But we're not done.
You scared us."
Jay nodded.
Guilt twisting in her chest.
"I know.
I'm sorry.
I really am."
She walked to her room.
Closed the door.
Leaned against it.
What am I doing?
What are we doing?
What is any of this?
---
That Afternoon
Jay's phone buzzed.
Keifer: You okay?
She stared at the message.
Heart racing.
Jay: Fine. Brothers are mad but fine.
Keifer: Good. Listen. My friends are coming over tonight. The ones I told you about. Aries and Percy. You should meet them.
Jay's blood went cold.
Jay: Meet them? Why?
Keifer: Because they're important to me. And you're... you're important to me too. Whatever that means. I want you to know each other.
Whatever that means.
The words echoed in her head.
They still hadn't defined this.
Still hadn't talked about what happened between them.
Still didn't know if last night meant anything or everything.
Jay: I don't know if that's a good idea.
Keifer: Please. Just for an hour. If it's weird, you can leave. But I want you there.
Jay stared at the screen.
Her heart pulled in two directions.
Fear.
Hope.
Confusion.
Want.
Jay: Okay. What time?
Keifer: 7. I'll send the address.
---
7pm
Jay stood outside Keifer's building.
Nervous.
Unsure.
Dressed in simple jeans and a sweater.
Nothing fancy.
Nothing trying too hard.
She didn't know what they were.
Didn't know if she should dress up or dress down.
Didn't know if she was his girlfriend or just a girl he liked or something in between.
The elevator ride felt endless.
Floor 50.
Doors open.
She knocked.
Keifer opened the door.
He looked good.
Dark shirt.
Jeans.
Hair slightly messy.
Eyes soft when he saw her.
"Hey," he said.
"You came."
"Hey.
I came."
They stood there.
Awkward.
Neither knowing how to greet the other.
A hug?
Too much.
A handshake?
Too formal.
Finally, Keifer stepped aside.
"Come in.
They're not here yet."
Jay walked in.
Looked around his beautiful, cold apartment.
Still no photos.
Still no warmth.
Still lonely.
"They'll like you," Keifer said.
Behind her.
Close.
Too close.
She turned.
He was right there.
Looking down at her.
Those gray eyes unreadable.
"Will they?" she asked.
"I'm just your assistant.
Why would your best friends care about me?"
Keifer's jaw tightened.
"You're not just my assistant.
You know that."
"Do I?
Because we haven't talked about it.
About what we are.
About what last night meant."
The words hung between them.
Heavy.
Honest.
Keifer ran a hand through his hair.
"I know.
I know we haven't.
Because I don't know what to say.
I've never felt like this before.
I don't have words for it."
Jay's heart softened.
Just slightly.
"Neither do I."
They stood there.
Close.
Confused.
Feeling everything and nothing at the same time.
Then the doorbell rang.
---
Keifer stepped back.
Took a breath.
Opened the door.
"Finally!" a voice boomed.
"Took you long enough!
We've been waiting downstairs for—"
The voice stopped.
Jay turned.
Smiled politely.
Ready to meet Keifer's friends.
Then she saw them.
Two men.
One tall with sharp eyes and dark sand-colored hair.
One slightly shorter with a mischievous smile and tousled brown hair.
Her brothers.
Aries and Percy.
Standing in Keifer's doorway.
Looking at her like they'd seen a ghost.
---
The world stopped.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
No one spoke.
Jay's brain couldn't process.
Couldn't connect the dots.
Couldn't understand why her brothers were here.
In Keifer's apartment.
Looking as shocked as she felt.
Percy spoke first.
Voice strange.
Strained.
"Jay?
What are you doing here?"
Aries just stared.
Eyes moving between her and Keifer.
Putting pieces together.
Not liking the picture.
Jay's mouth opened.
No words came out.
Keifer looked between them.
Frowning.
Confused.
"You know each other?"
Percy laughed.
Not a happy laugh.
A disbelieving laugh.
A what-the-hell-is-happening laugh.
"Know each other?
Keifer, this is our sister.
Our baby sister.
Jasper Jean Mariano.
Jay.
The one we've told you about.
The one who sings.
The one we raised.
This is her."
---
Keifer went pale.
Slowly.
Like watching color drain from a painting.
His face lost all expression.
His eyes went wide.
His body went still.
"No," he whispered.
"No.
That's not possible."
Aries stepped forward.
Voice tight.
Controlled.
"That's exactly what we were thinking.
Seeing our sister in our best friend's apartment.
Without any warning.
Without any explanation."
He looked at Jay.
Hard.
Searching.
"Jay.
What are you doing here?
How do you know Keifer?"
Jay's voice finally returned.
Small.
Shaky.
"He's my boss.
I work for him.
At Watson Enterprises.
I got a job there.
Three weeks ago."
Percy's jaw dropped.
"You work for Keifer?
And you didn't tell us?"
"I didn't know you knew him!
How would I know?
You never mentioned a Keifer!
You never said anything about your rich best friend!"
Aires ran a hand over his face.
"This is insane.
This is actually insane."
---
Keifer found his voice.
Rough.
Shaken.
"Wait.
Wait.
Let me understand this.
You two...
Aries and Percy...
Are Jay's brothers?
The brothers she lives with?
The ones she's always talking about?"
Percy nodded slowly.
"The one and only.
Aries Mariano.
Percy Mariano.
Her brothers.
Your best friends.
Small world, huh?"
Keifer looked at Jay.
Something unreadable in his eyes.
Shock.
Confusion.
Something deeper.
Something scared.
"Jay...
I didn't know.
I swear I didn't know."
She nodded.
"I believe you.
How could you know?
I didn't know either."
Aries crossed his arms.
"Okay.
So.
You're her boss.
She works for you.
And she just happened to be at your apartment.
Last night.
Overnight.
Hence the missing sister situation this morning."
Jay's face went red.
Percy's eyes went wide.
Keifer's jaw tightened.
"It's not what you think," Jay started.
Percy held up a hand.
"Stop.
Don't.
I don't want to hear it.
My baby sister.
With my best friend.
I need a minute."
He walked to the window.
Stared out at the city.
Muttering to himself.
---
Aries was calmer.
Too calm.
The dangerous kind of calm.
"Keifer.
Look at me."
Keifer looked.
Met his eyes.
"What is she to you?
Honest answer."
Keifer hesitated.
Glanced at Jay.
Looked back at Aries.
"I don't know."
His voice was quiet.
Raw.
"I don't know what she is.
I don't know what we are.
We haven't figured it out yet.
But she's...
She's not nothing.
She's not just my employee.
She's not just some girl."
Jay's heart clenched.
Not nothing.
It wasn't a declaration of love.
But it was honest.
Real.
Confused.
Just like she felt.
Aries studied him.
Long.
Hard.
Seeing everything.
"You like her."
It wasn't a question.
Keifer nodded.
Slowly.
"yeah.
I like her.
I don't know what that means.
I don't know where it's going.
But yeah.
I like her."
---
Percy turned from the window.
Face unreadable.
"You like our sister.
Our baby sister.
The one we've protected since she was twelve.
The one we worked double shifts for.
The one we kept alive when our mom died."
Keifer nodded again.
"I know.
I know who she is to you.
I've heard you talk about her for years.
I just didn't know...
I didn't know it was her."
Percy walked closer.
Stood right in front of him.
They were the same height.
Eye to eye.
"If you hurt her—
If you play games with her—
If you break her heart—
I don't care that we've been friends for fifteen years.
I don't care that you're rich.
I don't care about any of it.
I will end you.
Understand?"
Keifer didn't flinch.
Didn't look away.
"Understood.
And for what it's worth...
I would never hurt her.
Intentionally or otherwise.
She's...
She's special.
I knew it the moment she walked into my office."
---
Jay stood frozen.
Watching the three most important men in her life circle each other.
Her brothers.
Her boss.
The man she was falling for.
All connected.
All shocked.
All trying to figure out what happened.
Aries sighed.
Rubbed his face.
The tension leaving his shoulders slightly.
"This is insane," he muttered.
"Completely insane.
What are the odds?
What are the actual odds?"
Percy snorted.
"Apparently pretty good.
Because here we are."
Keifer ran a hand through his hair.
"I need to sit down."
He walked to the couch.
Sat heavily.
Stared at nothing.
Jay sat next to him.
Not touching.
But close.
Close enough to feel his warmth.
"You okay?" she whispered.
He looked at her.
Those storm-gray eyes full of chaos.
"I don't know.
My best friends are your brothers.
You're their sister.
You work for me.
And I...
I have feelings for you.
Feelings I don't understand.
Feelings that are suddenly a thousand times more complicated."
Jay nodded.
"I know.
I feel it too.
The confusion.
The fear.
The...
The something.
I don't know what to call it either."
---
Percy watched them.
Eyes narrowing.
"You two are weird.
You know that?
You're sitting there having some kind of silent conversation.
Like you have your own language.
It's creepy."
Aries snorted.
"Leave them alone, Perce.
They're processing.
So are we."
Percy threw his hands up.
"Processing?
I'm not processing anything!
My best friend likes my sister!
My sister likes my best friend!
This is a nightmare!
A beautiful, confusing, what-the-hell nightmare!"
Despite everything, Jay laughed.
Small.
Nervous.
But real.
Percy stared at her.
Then cracked a smile.
Reluctant.
Genuine.
"You're impossible, you know that?
Making me laugh when I want to be mad."
Jay shrugged.
"Learned from the best."
Percy shook his head.
Looked at Keifer.
"So.
What now?
You like her.
She likes you.
We're caught in the middle.
Where do we go from here?"
---
Keifer looked at Jay.
She looked at him.
Neither had an answer.
"I don't know," Keifer admitted.
"We haven't talked about it.
Haven't defined anything.
It's too new.
Too confusing."
Aries nodded slowly.
"That's fair.
But you need to figure it out.
Because now we're involved.
Now it's not just the two of you.
Now it's all of us."
Jay swallowed.
"I know.
And I'm sorry.
I didn't mean for any of this to happen.
I didn't plan it.
It just...
Did."
Percy sighed.
Walked over.
Sat on the other side of Jay.
Put an arm around her.
"We know, Jay.
We know you didn't plan this.
You're not exactly the scheming type.
Too honest for your own good."
Jay leaned into him.
Grateful.
Comforted.
"But," Percy continued, looking at Keifer,
"We're watching you.
Closely.
Every move.
Every word.
Every look.
If you're going to be in her life, you do it right.
Understood?"
Keifer nodded.
"Understood.
I wouldn't have it any other way."
---
Aries sat in the chair across from them.
Studying the scene.
His sister between his brother and his best friend.
Strange.
Surreal.
But not entirely terrible.
"Okay," he said quietly.
"So.
We're all here.
We all know the truth.
Now what?"
Percy shrugged.
"Now we order pizza.
Because I'm starving.
And we figure out how to exist in this new weird reality."
Jay laughed again.
More relaxed this time.
"Pizza sounds good."
Keifer nodded.
"I'll order.
Any preferences?"
Aries raised an eyebrow.
"You're asking us?
In your own apartment?
After we just invaded your life and complicated everything?"
Keifer almost smiled.
Almost.
"You're still my friends.
Complicated or not.
And you're her brothers.
That means something.
Even if I don't know what yet."
Percy grinned.
"Look at you.
Getting all soft.
Who knew all it took was our sister to crack that cold heart of yours?"
Keifer's face went slightly pink.
Jay noticed.
Her heart did a little flip.
Soft.
He's soft because of me.
---
They ordered pizza.
Sat in Keifer's living room.
Four people bound by coincidence.
Talking.
Laughing.
Navigating the strange new space between them.
At one point, Percy pulled Jay aside.
"You really like him?"
he asked quietly.
"Not because he's rich.
Not because he's your boss.
But really like him?"
Jay looked at Keifer across the room.
Talking to Aries.
His guard down.
His smile real.
His eyes warm.
"Yeah," she whispered.
"I really do.
I don't know what it is yet.
I don't know where it's going.
But yeah.
I really like him."
Percy studied her.
Saw the truth in her eyes.
Sighed.
"Fine.
But if he breaks your heart, I break his face."
Jay smiled.
"Deal."
---
Later, when Aries and Percy left, the apartment felt empty again.
Jay stood at the door.
Keifer beside her.
"That was...
Something," she said.
"Yeah.
Something."
They looked at each other.
Confused.
Hopeful.
Scared.
Feeling too much and not enough.
"I should go," Jay whispered.
"Give you space.
Give us space.
Figure out what this means."
Keifer nodded.
Slowly.
Reluctantly.
"Yeah.
Probably."
Neither moved.
Finally, Keifer reached out.
Took her hand.
Squeezed gently.
"Jay?
Whatever this is...
Whatever we're feeling...
I'm not running from it.
Okay?
I'm scared.
Confused.
All of it.
But I'm not running."
Jay's eyes stung.
Tears she didn't expect.
"Me neither."
He lifted her hand.
Kissed her knuckles.
Soft.
Sweet.
Gentle.
"Go home.
Rest.
We'll talk tomorrow.
Figure this out.
Together."
Jay nodded.
Not trusting her voice.
She walked to the elevator.
Turned back.
He was still there.
Watching her.
Those storm-gray eyes full of something she couldn't name.
The doors closed.
She leaned against the wall.
Heart full.
Head spinning.
What are we?
What is this?
Where do we go from here?
She didn't have answers.
Neither did he.
But for the first time in her life, that didn't scare her.
It felt like the beginning of something.
Something big.
Something life-changing.
Something she couldn't wait to discover.
---
Across town, Aries and Percy sat in their apartment.
Staring at each other.
"Well," Percy said.
"That was the weirdest night of my life."
Aries nodded.
"Same."
"Our best friend.
And our sister.
Who knew?"
"No one.
That's who."
Percy grinned suddenly.
"But you know what?
He's good for her.
I think.
Maybe.
We'll see."
Aries almost smiled.
"Yeah.
Maybe.
We'll see."
They sat in comfortable silence.
Processing.
Accepting.
Moving forward.
Their sister was falling for their best friend.
And somehow, impossibly, it felt right.
