Chapter 7 - fall

Chapter 6: The Fall

The Morning After

Jay woke to warmth.

Not just from the sunlight streaming through Keifer's floor-to-ceiling windows.

But from his arms.

Wrapped around her waist.

Holding her close even in sleep.

She smiled.

Turned slowly in his embrace.

Faced him.

He was still asleep.

Face relaxed.

Younger somehow without the usual tension in his jaw.

Beautiful in a way that made her chest ache.

How did I get here?

How did someone like me end up with someone like him?

She reached up.

Gently traced his eyebrow.

His cheekbone.

His lips.

His eyes fluttered open.

For a moment, he looked confused.

Then he saw her.

And his whole face softened.

"Hey," he murmured, voice rough with sleep.

"Hey yourself."

His arms tightened.

Pulled her closer.

Buried his face in her hair.

"This is nice," he mumbled.

"Waking up to you."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah."

They lay there.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

The city waking up below them.

Then a tiny voice shouted from somewhere in the house.

"KUYA KAI! KUYA KOYA! AWI! PEH!

WAKE UP!

IT'S MORNING!

I'M HUNGRY!"

Jay laughed.

Keifer groaned.

"Keiran," they said together.

---

Breaktime Chaos

Breakfast at the Watson mansion was an event.

The dining table was huge.

Could seat twenty easily.

This morning it held:

Keiran, bouncing in his chair.

Keigan, reading a book while eating cereal.

Percy, stealing bacon from Aries's plate.

Aries, threatening Percy with a spoon.

Serina—Mamma—pouring juice with a serene smile.

Keizer—Pappa—reading the newspaper like nothing was happening.

And Keifer, sitting beside Jay, their knees touching under the table.

Jay looked around.

At this chaos.

This warmth.

This family.

Mine, she thought.

They're mine now.

Keiran pointed at her with his spoon.

"Kuya Jay!

You sleep good?

Kuya Kai's room is comfy, right?

I sleep there sometimes when I have bad dreams."

Jay choked on her orange juice.

Keifer went slightly pink.

Percy howled with laughter.

"KUYA JAY?

Keiran, what did you call her?"

Keiran shrugged.

"She's Kuya Jay.

She's family.

Family are Kuyas.

That's the rule."

Keigan looked up from his book.

"That's not a rule.

That's just something you made up."

Keiran stuck out his tongue.

"You're not the boss of rules, Kuya Koya."

Jay laughed.

Ruffled Keiran's hair.

"Kuya Jay is perfect.

I love it."

Keiran beamed.

"See?

Kuya Jay gets it."

---

After breakfast, Jay offered to help clear the table.

Mamma waved her off.

"Nonsense, dear.

You're a guest.

Relax.

Enjoy your first full day here."

Jay insisted.

"I want to help.

Please.

I'm not used to sitting around."

Mamma smiled.

Warm.

Proud.

"Then help you shall.

The kitchen is this way."

Jay gathered plates.

Balanced them carefully.

Walked toward the kitchen.

The marble floor was shiny.

Too shiny.

Freshly waxed.

She didn't see the wet spot near the doorway.

---

Her foot slipped.

The plates flew from her hands.

Crashed to the floor.

Shards everywhere.

Jay's body twisted.

Tried to catch itself.

Failed.

Her head hit the marble floor.

Hard.

A sickening crack.

Then nothing.

---

The Fall

Time stopped.

For one terrible second, everyone froze.

Keiran's spoon clattered to his plate.

Keigan's book slipped from his hands.

Aries's face went white.

Percy's smile vanished.

Mamma's hand flew to her mouth.

Pappa dropped his newspaper.

Keifer moved first.

"JAY!"

He was across the room in seconds.

Fell to his knees beside her.

Her eyes were closed.

Her body still.

Blood pooling slowly beneath her head.

"No.

No, no, no, no, no."

He gathered her gently.

So gently.

Cradled her head in his lap.

"Jay.

Jay, wake up.

Please wake up."

She didn't move.

Didn't respond.

Didn't breathe.

---

Percy was beside him.

Hands shaking.

Face ashen.

"Keifer—

Keifer, is she—

Is she—"

"She's breathing.

I think.

I don't—

Someone call 911!

NOW!"

Aries was already on the phone.

Voice tight but controlled.

Giving the address.

Describing the situation.

His hands trembled but his voice stayed steady.

Keigan stood frozen.

Watching.

Terrified.

Keiran started crying.

Big, loud, scared sobs.

"MAMMA!

WHAT'S WRONG WITH KUYA JAY?

WHY IS SHE SLEEPING?

WHY IS THERE RED?"

Mamma grabbed both boys.

Pulled them close.

Shielding them.

Her own face pale.

Her own eyes wet.

"She'll be okay, babies.

Kuya Jay will be okay.

Mamma promises."

But her voice shook.

---

Pappa knelt beside Keifer.

Pressed fingers to Jay's neck.

Checked her pulse.

"Strong," he said quietly.

"Pulse is strong.

That's good.

That's very good."

Keifer nodded.

Couldn't speak.

Could only hold her.

Rock her slightly.

Press kisses to her forehead.

"Wake up," he whispered.

"Please wake up.

I can't—

I just found you.

You can't leave.

You can't."

Jay didn't move.

---

The ambulance arrived in seven minutes.

Felt like seven years.

Paramedics swarmed.

Gently took Jay from Keifer's arms.

Placed her on a stretcher.

Checked her pupils.

Shone lights in her eyes.

Asked questions no one could answer.

"Head injury.

Possible concussion.

Maybe worse.

We need to move fast."

Keifer stood.

Stumbled.

Followed them.

"I'm coming.

I'm her—

I'm—

I'm coming."

The paramedic nodded.

"Family can ride along.

One person."

Aries stepped forward.

"Go.

We'll follow.

We'll bring Mamma and the boys.

Just go."

Keifer grabbed his arm.

Eyes wild.

Frightened.

Broken.

"She has to be okay.

She has to."

Aries squeezed his shoulder.

His own eyes wet.

His own heart shattered.

"She will be.

She's a Mariano.

We're fighters.

Go.

Be with her."

---

The Hospital

The ambulance ride was a blur.

Sirens.

Lights.

Hands working on Jay.

Voices calling out words Keifer didn't understand.

He held her hand.

The whole time.

Squeezed.

Prayed.

Begged.

"Stay with me, Jay.

Please stay with me.

I love you.

I know I haven't said it.

I know we haven't figured things out.

But I love you.

I love you.

Please don't leave."

Jay's hand was limp in his.

No response.

No squeeze back.

Nothing.

---

At the hospital, they took her away.

Through double doors.

Into places he couldn't follow.

A nurse guided him to a waiting room.

Sat him down.

Brought him water he didn't drink.

"Someone will update you soon.

Try to stay calm."

Stay calm.

How do you stay calm when your whole world is on a gurney behind closed doors?

---

Twenty minutes later, the doors burst open.

Aries first.

Percy right behind.

Then Mamma.

Pappa.

Keigan holding Mamma's hand.

Keiran in Pappa's arms, still crying.

Percy crossed to Keifer in three steps.

Grabbed him.

Held him tight.

"She's going to be okay, man.

She's tough.

Tougher than all of us."

Keifer couldn't speak.

Could only nod against Percy's shoulder.

Aries sat beside them.

Head in his hands.

"I should have caught her.

I was right there.

I should have—"

Percy cut him off.

"Stop.

You couldn't have.

No one could have.

It happened so fast."

Mamma knelt in front of Keifer.

Took his face in her hands.

Her eyes red but dry.

"Mark Keifer Watson.

Look at me."

He looked.

Those storm-gray eyes shattered.

"She loves you.

I saw it.

Everyone saw it.

She's not going to leave you.

She has too much to live for.

Too many people who love her."

Keifer nodded.

Swallowed.

Tried to breathe.

"I didn't tell her," he whispered.

"I didn't tell her I love her.

She doesn't know.

What if—

What if she never—"

Mamma pulled him close.

Held him like she did when he was small.

"She knows.

Trust me.

A mother knows these things.

She knows."

---

The Waiting

Hours passed.

Keigan sat quietly beside Aries.

Leaning against him.

Finding comfort in his calm presence.

"Will Kuya Jay be okay, Awi?"

Aries put an arm around him.

"She will be, Keigan.

She's strong.

And we're all here waiting for her.

She'll wake up and see all of us and know she's loved."

Keigan nodded.

Satisfied.

Went back to watching the doors.

Keiran had cried himself to sleep in Pappa's arms.

His little face streaked with tears.

His small hand clutching the dinosaur Jay had held yesterday.

Percy paced.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

Muttering prayers under his breath.

Mamma sat with Keifer.

Holding his hand.

Saying nothing.

Just being there.

Pappa made calls.

Arranged things.

Kept the world moving so they didn't have to.

And Keifer waited.

Stared at the doors.

Willed them to open.

Willed someone to come with good news.

---

Finally, a doctor appeared.

Dark circles under her eyes.

But a small smile on her face.

"Family of Jasper Mariano?"

Everyone stood at once.

Surged forward.

Keifer reached her first.

"How is she?

Is she okay?

Can we see her?"

The doctor held up a hand.

"She's stable.

The bleeding was superficial.

More scary than dangerous.

She has a concussion.

Moderate.

She'll need rest and monitoring."

A collective exhale.

Relief flooding the room.

"But," the doctor continued, "she hasn't woken up yet.

That's not unusual with head injuries.

Could be hours.

Could be a day.

We'll monitor closely."

Keifer's heart clenched.

"Can I see her?

Please.

I need to see her."

The doctor nodded.

"One person at a time.

Five minutes.

Then someone else can go."

---

Jay's Room

She looked so small in the hospital bed.

Machines beeping softly.

IV in her arm.

Bandage wrapped around her head.

Eyes closed.

Face pale.

Keifer sat beside her.

Took her hand.

Brought it to his lips.

"Hey," he whispered.

"It's me.

It's Keifer.

I'm here.

We're all here."

No response.

Just the steady beep of the heart monitor.

"I should have caught you.

I was right there.

But I was too slow.

I'm sorry.

I'm so sorry."

He pressed his forehead to her hand.

Tears falling.

Not caring who saw.

"You have to wake up, Jay.

Keiran keeps asking for you.

He wants to show you more dinosaurs.

Keigan wants you to hear him play piano.

Percy is driving everyone crazy.

Aries is trying to keep him calm.

Mamma is being Mamma.

Pappa is handling everything."

He paused.

Swallowed.

"And I'm falling apart.

Because I love you.

I love you, Jasper Jean Mariano.

I should have said it before.

I was scared.

I was confused.

I didn't know how.

But I love you.

So you have to wake up.

Please.

Wake up."

---

The Vigil

One by one, they came.

Percy sat with her.

Told her stupid jokes.

Made her promise to wake up so he could tell her better ones.

Aries held her hand.

Spoke softly.

Told her about the time they almost lost her when she was six and she fought through it.

Told her she could fight through this too.

Mamma smoothed her hair.

Sang a lullaby she used to sing to Keifer when he was small.

Promised her homemade soup when she woke up.

Pappa stood at the foot of the bed.

Quiet.

Strong.

A silent promise that he'd take care of everything.

Keigan came in last.

Held her hand gently.

Whispered:

"Kuya Jay.

I made you a card.

It has a volcano on it.

Volcanoes are strong.

Like you.

Wake up soon, okay?

Keiran misses you."

---

Night fell.

Visiting hours ended.

But no one left.

They camped in the waiting room.

Mamma and Pappa with the boys.

Percy pacing.

Aries watching.

Keifer refusing to leave Jay's side.

A nurse brought him a chair.

He pulled it right next to her bed.

Held her hand.

Refused to let go.

"I'm not leaving," he told her quietly.

"I'm staying right here.

And when you wake up, I'll be the first thing you see.

So you better wake up soon.

Because this chair is uncomfortable."

No response.

Just the beep.

Just the night.

Just the waiting.

---

3am

Keifer's eyes were heavy.

He hadn't slept in almost twenty-four hours.

But he fought it.

Fought the exhaustion.

Fought the pull of sleep.

Then he felt it.

A tiny movement.

A squeeze.

Her fingers.

Around his.

His head snapped up.

Jay's eyes were open.

Blinking slowly.

Confused.

Looking around the room.

Then at him.

"Keifer?"

Her voice was raspy.

Weak.

But there.

Alive.

There.

Keifer burst into tears.

"Jay.

Jay, oh my god.

You're awake.

You're awake."

He pressed the call button.

Shouted for help.

But never let go of her hand.

Jay frowned.

Confused.

"What happened?

Why am I here?

Why are you crying?"

Keifer laughed.

Wet.

Relieved.

Hysterical.

"You fell.

Hit your head.

You've been unconscious for twelve hours.

I thought—

We all thought—

"

He couldn't finish.

Didn't need to.

Jay squeezed his hand again.

Weak but there.

"I'm okay," she whispered.

"I'm right here.

I'm not going anywhere."

---

Doctors flooded in.

Checked her pupils.

Asked questions.

Shone lights.

Nodded approvingly.

"Promising signs.

We'll keep her overnight for observation.

But I think she's going to be just fine."

When they finally left, Keifer collapsed back into his chair.

Exhausted.

Relieved.

Overwhelmed.

Jay reached for him.

Cupped his face with her free hand.

"Hey," she said softly.

"I'm okay.

You can breathe now."

He caught her hand.

Kissed her palm.

Pressed it to his cheek.

"I love you," he said.

"I should have said it before.

I was scared.

I didn't know how.

But I love you, Jasper Jean Mariano.

I love you."

Jay smiled.

Tired.

Warm.

Bright.

"I know," she whispered.

"I heard you.

When I was... wherever I was.

I heard you.

You said it over and over.

That's what pulled me back."

Keifer stared at her.

"You heard me?"

"Every word.

Now say it again.

When I can see your face."

He leaned close.

Forehead to forehead.

Those storm-gray eyes locked on hers.

"I love you, Jay."

She smiled.

"I love you too, Mark Keifer Watson.

Now kiss me.

I almost died.

I think I've earned it."

He laughed.

Kissed her gently.

Softly.

Reverently.

When they pulled apart, she was still smiling.

"Much better than unconsciousness."

He snorted.

"Don't ever scare me like that again."

"No promises.

But I'll try."

---

The door burst open.

Percy.

Aries.

Mamma.

Pappa.

Keigan.

Keiran in Pappa's arms, awake and crying happy tears now.

"KUYA JAY!"

Keiran scrambled down.

Ran to the bed.

Grabbed her hand.

"You're awake!

You're awake!

I was so scared!

Peh said you'd wake up but I was still scared!

Don't do that again!

Promise!"

Jay squeezed his little hand.

"I promise, Keiran.

I'll try really hard not to fall again."

Keigan stood beside his brother.

Quiet.

But his eyes were wet.

"Good," he said simply.

"You scared us."

Jay reached out.

Pulled him into a hug as best she could.

"I'm sorry, Koya.

I didn't mean to."

Keigan hugged her back.

Quick.

Fierce.

Then stepped away.

"It's okay.

Just don't do it again."

---

Mamma and Pappa hugged her gently.

Careful of the bandages.

Tears on both their faces.

"My brave girl," Mamma whispered.

"My beautiful, brave girl."

Pappa kissed her forehead.

"Rest now.

We're all here.

We're not going anywhere."

Percy and Aries hung back.

Watching their sister.

Alive.

Awake.

Talking.

When the others stepped away, they moved in.

One on each side of the bed.

Percy grabbed her hand.

"You scared ten years off my life.

I'm billing you for every single one."

Jay laughed.

Winced.

"Don't make me laugh.

Head hurts."

Aries smoothed her hair.

Gentle.

Brotherly.

"Rest, Jay.

We'll be here when you wake up.

Always."

She nodded.

Eyes already getting heavy.

"Love you guys," she mumbled.

"Love you too," they said together.

---

Keifer pulled his chair close again.

Took her hand.

Kissed it.

"Sleep," he whispered.

"I'll be right here."

She smiled.

Eyes closing.

"Stay?"

"Always."

She was asleep in seconds.

But this time, it was normal sleep.

Healing sleep.

Not the terrifying unconsciousness from before.

Keifer watched her breathe.

Steady.

Peaceful.

Alive.

Thank you, he prayed.

To whoever was listening.

Thank you for giving her back.

---

Morning

Sunlight streamed through the hospital windows.

Jay woke slowly.

Head sore.

Body tired.

But alive.

Definitely alive.

Keifer was asleep in the chair beside her.

Still holding her hand.

His face relaxed.

Peaceful.

She smiled.

Watched him breathe.

Counted the seconds between each rise and fall of his chest.

Mine, she thought.

He's mine.

The door opened softly.

Mamma peeked in.

Smiled when she saw Jay awake.

"Good morning, sleepyhead."

Jay smiled.

"Morning, Mamma."

Mamma walked in.

Kissed her forehead.

Looked at Keifer with soft eyes.

"He hasn't left.

Wouldn't eat.

Wouldn't sleep.

Just sat there holding your hand."

Jay's heart swelled.

"I know.

He's stubborn."

"Like his mother."

They shared a quiet laugh.

---

Keifer stirred.

Opened his eyes.

Immediately looked at Jay.

"Hey," he said, voice rough.

"You're awake."

"I'm awake.

And you need to eat and sleep properly."

He shrugged.

"Later.

Right now I'm just glad you're okay."

Mamma slipped out.

Giving them space.

Jay pulled his hand to her cheek.

Held it there.

"I love you," she said.

"Just so you know.

In case you forgot overnight."

He smiled.

Real.

Warm.

Bright.

"I love you too.

In case you forgot while you were unconscious."

"I didn't.

I heard you.

Remember?"

He leaned in.

Kissed her.

Soft.

Sweet.

Full of promise.

"Never doing that again," he murmured against her lips.

"The almost losing you part.

Not the kissing part.

The kissing part we're definitely doing again."

She laughed.

Winced.

"Ow.

Don't make me laugh.

But also don't stop."

He grinned.

"Never."

---

Later that day, Jay was discharged.

Doctors cleared her.

Concussion protocol.

Rest.

No stress.

No sudden movements.

Someone should stay with her for the next 24 hours.

Keifer looked at Mamma.

Mamma looked at Keifer.

Keifer looked at Jay.

"She's staying with me," he said firmly.

"In my room.

Where I can watch her."

Mamma raised an eyebrow.

But didn't argue.

"Fine.

But I'll be checking in.

Every hour."

Keifer nodded.

"Fair."

Jay smiled.

Tired but happy.

"Guess you're stuck with me."

Keifer kissed her forehead.

"Best kind of stuck."

---

Back at the Mansion

Keiran greeted them at the door.

Attacked Jay with a hug.

Carefully.

Gentle.

Like Mamma taught him.

"Kuya Jay!

You're home!

I saved you a dinosaur!

Rex wanted you to have him!

For protection!"

He pressed the little T-Rex into her hands.

Jay's eyes filled with tears.

"Thank you, Keiran.

I'll keep him with me always."

Keigan nodded approvingly.

"Good.

Dinosaurs are strong.

Like you."

Aries and Percy hovered.

Making sure she was comfortable.

Getting her water.

Adjusting pillows.

Being annoying in the most loving way possible.

Mamma made soup.

Insisted Jay eat every drop.

Pappa read aloud from the newspaper so she didn't have to strain her eyes.

And Keifer never left her side.

Not once.

Not for a second.

---

That night, they lay in his bed.

City lights outside.

Keiran's dinosaur on the nightstand.

Keifer's arms around her.

"How are you feeling?" he asked softly.

"Tired.

Sore.

Happy."

"Happy?"

She turned in his arms.

Faced him.

"Yeah.

Happy.

I have you.

I have your family—my family now.

I have my brothers.

I have people who love me.

I almost died and I got all of this."

He kissed her forehead.

"You almost died and you're being philosophical."

She laughed.

Quiet.

Careful not to jostle her head.

"Shut up.

Let me be grateful."

He smiled.

Pulled her closer.

"Okay.

Be grateful.

I'll be grateful with you."

They lay there.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

Alive.

"Keifer?"

"Yeah?"

"I'm glad you caught me.

Not just today.

But every day.

You keep catching me."

He kissed her hair.

"Always will.

That's my job now.

Catching you when you fall."

She smiled against his chest.

"Good.

Because I think I'm going to keep falling for you.

Over and over again."

He held her tighter.

"Then I'll keep catching you.

Every single time."
