Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 The Pairing

The training hall buzzed with quiet conversation the next morning.

Nightfall warriors gathered along the edges of the large wooden structure while the Silverfang survivors stood near the center of the room. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows lining the walls, illuminating the polished floor and the large map table positioned near the front.

Raven could feel the anticipation in the air.

Today was the first official day of Nightfall's training observation.

And apparently it would begin with pairings.

Lucas leaned against one of the wooden support beams beside Raven, arms folded across his chest.

"I'm calling it now," he said.

"Calling what?" Raven asked.

"That we're partners."

Raven glanced sideways at him.

"You sound very confident."

Lucas grinned.

"You already threw me across the ring once. Clearly we have good chemistry."

Raven laughed softly.

"I'm not sure that's the word I would use."

Across the hall, Claude stood with several other warriors. He noticed Raven laughing and tilted his head slightly.

His attention drifted between Raven and Lucas.

Interesting.

Claude had been in Nightfall long enough to recognize the early signs of competition.

And he had never been one to avoid a challenge.

Selene stepped forward to the front of the hall.

The quiet conversation died immediately.

Beside her stood Garrick and several other high-ranking warriors.

"Today's exercise will test coordination," Selene announced.

Her voice carried easily through the room.

"You will be paired with a Nightfall warrior and sent into the forest for a short-range hunt."

Raven blinked.

"A hunt?"

Garrick nodded.

"Observation includes field behavior."

Lucas leaned closer to Raven.

"Told you."

Raven raised an eyebrow.

"You told me we'd be partners."

"Still might be."

At the far side of the hall, Marcel stood near the map table reviewing the list of pairings.

The sheet of paper in front of him contained the original assignments Selene had prepared.

Lucas — Raven.

Claude — Mira.

Garrick — Tomas.

Marcel studied the page silently.

His wolf stirred again beneath his calm exterior.

Mate.

The instinct had grown stronger every time Raven entered the same room as him.

Stronger every time she laughed.

Every time she moved.

Yet she still showed no reaction.

That alone continued to puzzle him.

Mate bonds were supposed to be unmistakable.

Both wolves felt them.

Both wolves reacted.

But Raven…

Nothing.

Still.

His wolf remained certain.

Mine.

Marcel exhaled slowly.

Then he picked up the pen beside the list.

And changed one name.

Selene began reading the assignments.

"Garrick and Tomas."

The two warriors nodded.

"Mira and Claude."

Claude smiled faintly and gave Mira a polite nod.

Mira crossed her arms.

"Wonderful."

The hall filled with quiet amusement.

Selene continued down the list.

Lucas leaned forward slightly beside Raven.

"Next one's us."

Raven rolled her eyes.

"You're very confident."

Selene read the next pairing.

"Lucas and Elias."

Lucas blinked.

"…wait."

Several warriors laughed.

Lucas straightened.

"That has to be a mistake."

Elias looked equally confused.

"Apparently we're partners now."

Lucas glanced toward the table where Marcel stood.

The Alpha didn't look up.

But Lucas had been in Nightfall long enough to understand exactly what had happened.

He slowly turned toward Raven.

"Well," he said.

"That's suspicious."

Selene read the final pairing.

"And Raven…"

She paused briefly.

"Alpha Marcel."

Silence filled the training hall.

Raven blinked.

Several Nightfall warriors exchanged surprised looks.

Even Claude's eyebrows lifted slightly.

Lucas stared openly now.

"Oh," he said slowly.

"That's very suspicious."

Raven felt heat rise to her cheeks.

She looked toward the front of the room.

Marcel stood there calmly, as if nothing unusual had just happened.

Their eyes met.

That familiar warmth stirred again deep in her chest.

Then Selene spoke again.

"Prepare your equipment. You leave in ten minutes."

The forest beyond Nightfall territory was quieter than Raven expected.

Tall pines stretched toward the sky, their thick branches forming a canopy overhead that filtered the sunlight into soft green shadows. The ground beneath their feet was covered in moss, pine needles, and patches of frost that had not yet melted in the cool mountain air.

Raven walked several steps behind Marcel.

Not intentionally.

He was simply… large.

His stride covered ground quickly, forcing her to move faster than usual to keep pace.

Up close, his size was even more obvious.

His shoulders seemed impossibly broad.

The black shirt he wore stretched across muscle that looked carved from stone.

Raven looked away quickly.

She had already been caught staring once.

No reason to repeat the mistake.

Marcel slowed slightly.

"You can walk beside me," he said calmly.

Raven cleared her throat.

"I wasn't trying to lag behind."

"I know."

She moved up beside him.

For a few minutes they walked in silence.

The forest smelled of pine and damp earth.

Birds called softly somewhere in the distance.

Raven became aware of the strange warmth again.

Stronger now.

It settled low in her chest.

Her wolf stirred slightly.

Uncertain.

"What exactly are we hunting?" she asked.

"Nothing specific," Marcel replied.

"This exercise is about observation."

"Observation of what?"

"You."

Raven frowned slightly.

"That sounds ominous."

Marcel almost smiled.

"Nightfall studies its allies carefully."

Raven considered that.

"Are we allies?"

Marcel looked at her.

"That depends on what happens next."

The warmth in her chest deepened slightly under his gaze.

She quickly looked ahead again.

Walking beside him felt strangely intense.

Not dangerous.

Just… charged.

As if something invisible existed between them.

Marcel felt it too.

His wolf surged beneath his control.

Mate.

The word echoed through his instincts again.

Mine.

But Raven still showed no sign of recognition.

And that mystery only made the pull stronger.

Marcel exhaled slowly.

This situation was becoming more complicated by the minute.

Back in the training hall, Claude leaned against the doorway watching the forest where the pairs had disappeared.

Lucas walked up beside him.

"You noticed it too, didn't you?"

Claude smiled faintly.

"The Alpha changing the pairings?"

Lucas nodded.

Claude's eyes remained fixed on the forest.

"Yes," he said quietly.

"I noticed."

Lucas crossed his arms.

"That's trouble."

Claude chuckled softly.

"Only if Raven finds him interesting."

Lucas looked toward the trees.

"You don't think she will?"

Claude's smile widened slightly.

"We'll see."

Deep in the forest, Raven walked beside the Alpha of Nightfall.

And neither of them realized yet…

Just how powerful the bond between them truly was.
