Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 Firelight

Nightfall changed after sunset.

During the day the territory felt disciplined and organized, almost like a military settlement hidden inside the mountains. Wolves moved with purpose, training fields rang with the sound of sparring, and patrol teams left the valley with quiet efficiency.

But at night…

The pack became something else entirely.

Alive.

Warm golden lanterns illuminated the wide courtyards between lodges. Fire pits were lit across the central clearing, their flames crackling softly as wolves gathered to talk, eat, and relax after the long day of training.

The scent of roasted meat drifted through the cool evening air.

Music played faintly from one of the larger lodges where several wolves had begun playing instruments.

For the first time since arriving in Nightfall, Raven saw the pack not as warriors or observers…

But as a community.

She stood near the edge of the central courtyard watching the scene unfold.

"Different from Silverfang," Mira said quietly beside her.

Raven nodded.

"Very."

Silverfang had been lively too, but it had never been this large. Never this organized. Never this… grand.

Several long wooden tables had been arranged around the largest fire pit. Wolves filled the benches, laughing and talking as food was passed from hand to hand.

Jarek had already claimed a seat with Elias near the center of the group.

He waved when he spotted them.

"Food!" he shouted. "Before Lucas eats everything!"

Lucas scoffed from across the table.

"That only happened once."

"It happened yesterday," Jarek replied.

The surrounding wolves laughed.

Raven smiled slightly.

For the first time since the attack…

The knot of grief in her chest loosened just a little.

As Raven and Mira approached the table, Claude appeared beside them as if summoned by the scent of opportunity.

"I was beginning to think you planned to stand in the shadows all evening," he said.

Raven glanced at him.

"Observing."

Claude placed a hand dramatically over his chest.

"Observing? That's my job."

"You have a job?"

Claude grinned.

"I'm extremely important."

Mira snorted softly and continued toward the table, leaving Raven to deal with him.

Claude gestured toward the open bench beside him.

"Sit."

Raven raised an eyebrow.

"That sounded like an order."

"More like a suggestion."

"And if I decline?"

Claude leaned slightly closer.

"I'll be very disappointed."

Raven shook her head but sat down anyway.

Claude smiled.

"Excellent decision."

Across the courtyard, Marcel stood near the edge of the Alpha lodge balcony.

From there he could see the entire gathering.

Firelight illuminated the clearing below, casting flickering shadows across the wolves seated around the long tables.

His gaze moved across the crowd automatically.

A habit.

An Alpha always knew what was happening within his territory.

But tonight his attention settled in one place.

Raven.

She sat beside Claude now.

The other wolf leaned toward her, speaking animatedly while she laughed softly at something he said.

Marcel felt his wolf surge violently beneath the surface.

Mine.

The instinct slammed through him with enough force to tighten his jaw.

His fingers curled slightly against the balcony railing.

Possessive irritation stirred beneath his calm exterior.

Darius stepped beside him.

"You're staring again."

Marcel didn't answer.

Below them, Claude said something that made Raven laugh again.

Darius followed Marcel's gaze.

"Ah," he said quietly.

"The girl."

Marcel exhaled slowly.

"She seems comfortable."

Darius glanced at him.

"You don't."

Marcel said nothing.

But his wolf remained restless.

Watching.

Waiting.

Back at the table, Claude was thoroughly enjoying himself.

"So tell me something," he said, resting his elbow casually on the table.

"What?"

Claude studied her with clear amusement.

"How does someone your size throw Lucas across a sparring ring?"

Raven smirked slightly.

"I've been asking myself the same question."

"I don't believe that."

"Why?"

Claude leaned closer.

"You didn't look surprised."

Raven shrugged.

"Maybe I'm stronger than I look."

Claude's eyes sparkled slightly.

"I think you're many things stronger than you look."

Raven rolled her eyes.

"That sounded like flirting."

Claude grinned.

"It absolutely was."

Across the table, Jarek groaned.

"Please don't encourage him."

Claude ignored him completely.

"I'm serious," he said quietly to Raven. "You're interesting."

Raven felt heat rise faintly in her cheeks.

Claude had an easy charm that made conversation effortless.

Still…

Something inside her felt unsettled.

Her attention drifted briefly across the courtyard.

Toward the Alpha lodge.

Marcel stood on the balcony.

Watching.

The moment their eyes met, that now-familiar warmth surged through her chest again.

Stronger this time.

It spread through her core like slow-burning fire.

Raven quickly looked away.

Claude noticed immediately.

He followed her gaze.

Then his eyes narrowed slightly.

Ah.

Now that…

Was interesting.

Tomas watched the exchange carefully from the far end of the table.

He had seen Raven glance toward the Alpha lodge.

He had seen Marcel watching her.

And he had seen Claude notice.

Tomas leaned back slightly in his chair.

Something was happening.

He wasn't sure what yet.

But he didn't like the direction it seemed to be heading.

Not because Marcel was dangerous.

But because Raven had already lost too much.

And Tomas knew how powerful wolves could become when instincts took control.

The evening stretched on.

Food was passed around the table while stories were shared between warriors. The atmosphere grew warmer, louder, more relaxed as the pack settled into the comfortable rhythm of shared company.

Claude remained beside Raven the entire time.

Talking.

Laughing.

Occasionally leaning a little closer than necessary.

And every time he did…

Marcel noticed.

By the time Raven stood to leave the table, the strange tension in the air had grown impossible to ignore.

Claude rose with her.

"Walking back to the lodge?" he asked.

"Yes."

"I'll join you."

Before Raven could answer—

A deeper voice spoke behind them.

"That won't be necessary."

Both of them turned.

Marcel stood there.

His presence alone silenced half the table.

Claude's smile widened slightly.

"Alpha Marcel."

Marcel's gaze remained fixed on Raven.

"I need to speak with her."

The words were calm.

Controlled.

But unmistakably an Alpha's command.

Claude leaned back slightly.

"Well," he said lightly.

"That sounds important."

He looked toward Raven.

"I suppose I'll see you tomorrow."

Raven nodded slowly.

Claude walked away, though not before glancing back once at Marcel.

The challenge in his expression was subtle.

But very real.

When the courtyard quieted again, Raven found herself standing alone with Marcel.

The firelight illuminated his features.

His height felt even more overwhelming up close.

"You wanted to speak with me?" she asked.

Marcel studied her quietly for a moment.

"Yes."

The strange warmth in her chest returned again.

Stronger.

"What about?"

Marcel's voice lowered slightly.

"You should be careful."

Raven frowned.

"Careful of what?"

His eyes flicked briefly toward the direction Claude had gone.

"Claude."

Raven crossed her arms.

"He seems harmless."

Marcel's gaze returned to her.

"Most wolves appear harmless."

The tension between them thickened again.

Raven exhaled slowly.

"You didn't interrupt us just to warn me about Claude."

"No."

"Then why?"

For a moment Marcel didn't answer.

Because the truth—

His wolf didn't like seeing another wolf near her.

—was not something he was prepared to explain.

Finally he said quietly,

"Because something about you doesn't make sense."

Raven blinked.

"That's not ominous at all."

Marcel's gaze remained steady.

"You're stronger than you should be."

Raven hesitated.

The memory of the hunt returned.

The speed.

The power.

"I noticed that too."

For a moment they stood in silence.

The fire crackled behind them.

And the strange warmth between them continued to grow.

Neither of them understood it yet.

But something powerful had already begun.

And once it fully awakened…

Nothing in Nightfall would remain the same.
