Chapter 5: Shells Town
The sun was already high when the little boat bumped against the wooden dock at Shells Town, the impact light but enough to make Coby scramble to steady them. The port was alive in that lazy early-noon way, fishermen hauling crates, merchants arguing over prices, and beyond it all the massive Marine base rising like a slab of white stone arrogance watching the town from a distance. Luffy hopped out first, sandals slapping against the dock, stretching his arms high above his head and grinning at the sight of uniformed marines marching in formation down the main street.
"Awesome," he said, loud enough for a couple of townsfolk to glance nervously in his direction.
Coby lowered the sail and tied the boat properly, glancing toward the base with visible tension. "That's a Marine stronghold. We should try not to draw attention."
Luffy's stomach growled so violently it almost echoed.
Coby looked at him. "We've still got a few thousand berries left. That should cover lunch if we don't go crazy."
"Me? Go crazy?" Luffy laughed and slapped his belly. "I'm starving!"
They started walking toward a nearby restaurant, and halfway there Luffy suddenly began hopping from one foot to the other, throwing light punches into the air, spinning on his heel, then stretching his arms subtly behind his back before snapping them forward again. Outwardly he looked like a hyper idiot blowing off steam after a cramped night at sea.
"Luffy, what are you doing?" Coby asked, trying not to look embarrassed.
"Stretching!" Luffy said cheerfully. "Boat was tiny!"
Inside, he was mapping muscle memory. Testing elasticity. Balance. Speed. The memories fit perfectly. His body moved the way it should. No lag. No stiffness. Good. Very good. If Zoro was coming soon, he needed to be sharp.
They pushed open the restaurant door and the chatter inside dimmed slightly. A few customers glanced up, then went back to their meals. Luffy marched straight to a table and dropped into a chair.
"Oi! I want meat! A lot of it!" he shouted toward the counter.
Behind it stood a woman with dark hair tied back neatly, wearing a green dress over a darker shirt. Her posture was calm but firm, the kind of person used to running a place without letting it fall into chaos. She looked them over carefully.
"That depends," she said evenly. "You have money?"
Coby hurried forward. "We do! Just… nothing too expensive, please."
Luffy leaned back and grinned at her. "You got dumplings? And meat? And more meat?"
A couple of customers at the next table stiffened when Luffy casually added, "We're looking for Zoro too."
Forks paused midair.
One man nearly choked. "Z-Zoro?"
Another muttered, "Don't say that name so loud…"
Coby blinked. "Isn't he being held at the Marine base?"
Someone hissed, "And Captain Morgan commands that base!"
The reaction was immediate. Shoulders tensed. Eyes darted toward the windows like the name alone might summon trouble.
Luffy's grin widened slightly. Good. Same fear response. Same tension. Timeline intact.
"Captain Morgan?" Luffy said, tilting his head with exaggerated innocence. "He strong?"
The room went quiet in a way that answered the question better than words.
The restaurant owner narrowed her eyes slightly. "Eat your meal and mind your business. Trouble finds people who go looking for it."
Luffy's stomach growled again, louder this time, cutting through the tension.
Food arrived not long after. A large plate of dumplings, a generous portion of meat, simple but steaming hot. Luffy didn't wait. He grabbed a dumpling and stuffed it into his mouth, cheeks puffing immediately.
"Hot! Hot! But good!" he said around a mouthful.
Coby watched him with a mix of horror and amusement. "Slow down! You're going to choke!"
Luffy swallowed and slammed a hand on the table, grinning like a man who had just found buried treasure. "This is amazing!"
As he tore into the meat, he listened carefully to the whispers around him. Morgan's cruelty. Zoro's execution scheduled soon. The town living under fear.
Perfect.
Shells Town was exactly where it was supposed to be.
Luffy chewed thoughtfully, outwardly carefree, inwardly calculating. Rescue Zoro. Follow canon. Minimal deviation. Build strength early. Unlock haki faster than expected. Keep the world stable enough for his knowledge to matter.
He grabbed another dumpling and leaned back in his chair, flashing a wide, carefree grin that showed absolutely none of the strategy forming behind his eyes.
This was the beginning.
And he was exactly where he needed to be.
