Chapter 4 - 4. Straw Hat Reboot

Chapter 4: Straw Hat Reboot

He woke up dizzy.

Not hospital dizzy. Not concussion dizzy. More like hungover on reality dizzy.

The first thing he felt was the rocking.

Slow. Gentle. Water.

The second thing was the smell. Salt. Wood. Sea air.

Ethan's eyes snapped open.

Night sky. Stars scattered across a dark canvas. The faint sound of waves slapping against wood.

He sat up too fast and nearly tipped the small boat.

Small boat.

Very small boat.

He looked down at his hands.

They were thinner. Lighter. No scrapes from getting pancaked by trucks. No torn sleeve. He flexed his fingers and felt something strange. Loose. Elastic. Like the muscles were coiled rubber bands waiting to snap.

A soft snore came from beside him.

He turned.

Pink hair. Round glasses. Curled up awkwardly in the boat.

Coby.

Ethan stared at him for a long second.

Then he started grinning like a maniac.

"No fucking way."

And then it hit.

Not a headache. Not pain.

Memories.

They flooded him like a dam breaking.

A small village. A red haired pirate laughing. Shanks placing a straw hat on a crying boy's head. The taste of a weird ass fruit. Stretching arms. Getting punched. Learning to fight. Dreaming of becoming King of the Pirates.

Makino's smile. Ace. Sabo. Bandits. Mountains. Sea.

Years of Luffy's childhood compressed into seconds inside his skull.

He grabbed his head and sucked in a breath.

He remembered everything.

Not just Ethan.

Luffy.

Up until earlier that day.

Alvida's ship. Punching that fat bitch into the horizon. Smashing her iron mace. Freeing Coby.

He blinked hard.

"Perfect," he whispered.

He looked around again, heart racing.

This was early early.

Seventeen years old Luffy. Beginning of the journey. Right after Alvida.

Which meant next stop.

Shells Town.

Zoro.

He let out a low laugh.

"Okay. Okay. This is awesome."

He had worried he might wake up mid disaster. Enies Lobby with the government breathing down his neck. Impel Down surrounded by psychopaths. Marineford watching Ace die.

But no.

This was the beginning.

Clean slate.

Meta knowledge fully intact.

He looked down at his body again and stretched his arm slightly.

It extended.

Rubber.

He laughed under his breath.

"I am made of fucking rubber."

Coby stirred but did not wake.

Ethan leaned back and stared at the sky.

One Piece.

Out of all the options.

Dragon Ball would have been insane. Fairy Tail probably even more waifu dense. High School DxD would have been pure chaos and tits everywhere.

But this?

This felt right.

Dangerous. But not casually universe erasing dangerous.

Fun. Free. Wild.

He thought of Nami and smirked.

"Yeah. You are definitely first."

He rubbed his face and the smile slowly faded.

New York crept back into his mind.

The studio apartment. The debt. The loneliness. The escorts. The constant feeling of being one bill away from collapse.

He swallowed.

A single tear slipped down his cheek before he even realized it.

"Fuck that life," he whispered.

The sea breeze hit his face.

"I am not going through that shit again. Not ever."

He clenched his fist and felt the rubber stretch slightly.

"I will do whatever it takes."

He sat there in the tiny boat, the world quiet except for waves and Coby's soft snoring.

Then the strategist in him kicked in.

"Alright. Think."

Should he chase the One Piece exactly as Luffy did?

Should he break the script?

He knew the timeline. He knew who would betray who. Who would die. Who would survive. He knew secrets the world itself did not know yet.

But then a cold realization settled in.

If he changed too much too fast, the world would shift.

Butterfly effect.

Canon collapses.

Meta knowledge becomes useless.

And suddenly he is in a chaotic unknown, which might as well be Dragon Ball levels of unpredictability.

He snorted.

"Yeah. No thanks."

He would make changes.

Of course he would.

Train harder. Train smarter. Unlock haki earlier. Abuse knowledge of future enemies. Prepare for Crocodile. Prepare for CP9. Prepare for the New World.

But he would not shatter the timeline.

Not yet.

Follow the skeleton of canon.

Make subtle adjustments.

Keep events recognizable enough that he could navigate safely.

He flexed his fingers again and felt the power humming in his body.

"Train like fuck," he muttered.

That was the key.

If he could awaken haki early. If he could build his body beyond what Luffy originally did. If he could enter major arcs already stronger than expected.

He could reduce risk dramatically.

He looked over at Coby again.

Poor kid still thought he was useless.

Shells Town was next.

Zoro tied up in the yard.

Morgan's corruption.

That would be his first test.

He smiled slowly.

"This is it," he said quietly.

The Grand Line awaited.

Nami awaited.

The future awaited.

And this time, he was not some broke mathematician in Queens.

He was Monkey D. Luffy.

The sea rocked gently under the tiny boat as he stared at the horizon, mind racing with plans.

For now, Shells Town and Roronoa Zoro awaited.
