Chapter 8 - THE FIRST HORDE

The supermarket had become their fragile fortress, a patchwork of barricades and traps stitched together by desperation. For days, Sun Jun and Lin Yue had held the line, their uneasy alliance forged in fire and hunger. But that night, the walls trembled with guttural roars, a sound deeper and more primal than anything they had faced before.

The air grew thick, vibrating with menace. Then the horde came.

Zombies poured in through shattered windows and broken doors, drawn by the scent of life. Their shrieks echoed in the aisles, a chorus of hunger. Lin Yue's traps rattled and snapped, slowing their advance—cans clattered, wires tripped, sharpened glass cut into rotting flesh. Sun Jun stood at the center, lightning surging from his hands. Bolts arced across the ruins, frying dozens at once, the smell of ozone mingling with decay. For a moment, it seemed they might hold.

But the horde was relentless. More poured in, clawing over the fallen, their sheer numbers pressing against every defense. Sun Jun's thunder faltered, his breath ragged. Sweat dripped down his brow as the storm within him strained against exhaustion. For the first time, he felt his power waver.

Then the system chimed in his mind:

[Warning: Boss‑Level Monster Detected]

The words froze him. His heart hammered as the shadows shifted, and from the swarm emerged something far worse than the rest. A towering beast lumbered forward, its body fused with grotesque bone armor. Jagged plates jutted from its shoulders and chest, forming a natural shield. Its roar shook the walls, rattling the shelves, sending dust raining from the ceiling. This was no ordinary foe. This was a predator born of mutation, a monster that dwarfed the others.

Lin Yue's eyes widened. "What… what is that?"

Sun Jun swallowed hard. "Something new. Something dangerous."

---

The beast charged, its massive frame smashing through barricades as if they were paper. Lin Yue's traps snapped uselessly against its armor, sparks flying from broken wires. Sun Jun raised his hands, lightning bursting forth, but the bolts skittered across the bone plates, barely scorching the surface. The monster roared, unfazed, and swung a massive claw that shattered a shelf near him.

Sun Jun staggered back, his chest tight. His thunder had always been his edge, his certainty. But now, against this creature, it felt like striking stone with sparks. He gritted his teeth, forcing more power, arcs of electricity lashing out in a storm. The beast slowed, its movements jerking, but it did not fall.

Lin Yue darted forward, knife flashing. She aimed for the gaps between the bone plates, striking at exposed flesh. Her blade sank in, drawing black ichor, but the monster swatted her aside with terrifying force. She hit the ground hard, gasping, but rolled to her feet, eyes blazing with defiance.

"Keep hitting the weak spots!" she shouted. "The armor isn't everywhere!"

Sun Jun nodded, focusing his strikes. He aimed not at the plates but at the seams, the cracks where bone met flesh. Lightning speared into the gaps, sizzling deeper. The beast roared, staggering, its fury mounting. It swung again, smashing through walls, sending debris flying. The supermarket shook, their fragile shelter crumbling around them.

---

The battle became chaos. Zombies swarmed alongside the beast, clawing at barricades, shrieking in hunger. Lin Yue's traps thinned their ranks, but still they pressed forward. Sun Jun fought like a storm incarnate, lightning flashing, arcs dancing across the ruins. Lin Yue moved with deadly precision, her knife striking again and again at vulnerable flesh. Together, they carved a path through the swarm, but the beast remained, towering, relentless.

Sun Jun's muscles burned, his veins alight with power. He felt the storm within him faltering, his reserves draining. The system chimed again:

[Critical Energy Levels Detected]

He clenched his fists, refusing to yield. "Not yet," he growled. "Not here."

Lin Yue darted to his side, her face pale but determined. "We can't outlast it. We need to finish it—now!"

Her words struck him like a spark. Finish it. Not survive, not endure. End it. He looked at the beast, its armored frame looming, its roar shaking the ruins. And he knew what he had to do.

---

"Cover me," he said, voice steady despite the chaos.

Lin Yue's eyes widened. "What are you—"

"Just trust me."

She hesitated, then nodded. Trust was fragile between them, but in that moment, it was enough.

Sun Jun closed his eyes, drawing deep into the storm within. Electricity surged, not in bolts but in waves, gathering, building. His body trembled, arcs dancing across his skin. The air crackled, the supermarket filling with the hum of raw power. He was burning himself, pushing beyond limits, but it was the only way.

The beast roared, charging. Lin Yue leapt forward, her traps snapping, her knife flashing, slowing it just enough. Sun Jun opened his eyes, lightning blazing within them. He thrust his hands forward, unleashing everything.

A storm erupted. Bolts cascaded in a torrent, spearing into the beast, tearing through armor, ripping into flesh. The bone plates cracked, shattered, exploded under the force. The monster convulsed, its roar turning into a scream of agony. Lin Yue struck at the exposed wounds, her blade sinking deep. Together, storm and steel tore the creature apart.

With a final, thunderous crack, the beast collapsed, its massive frame crashing into the ruins. Silence followed, broken only by the crackle of fading electricity and the ragged breaths of survivors.

---

Sun Jun staggered, his body drained, his hands trembling. Lin Yue rushed to his side, catching him before he fell. Her eyes were wide, her face streaked with grime, but her grip was steady.

"You did it," she whispered. "We did it."

He managed a weak smile. "Together."

The supermarket was wrecked, their shelter shattered. But the beast was dead, the horde broken. For the first time, Sun Jun felt not just survival, but victory. And beside him, Lin Yue's presence was no longer suspicion—it was trust, fragile but real.

The system chimed one last time:

[Boss Defeated. Rewards Available.]

Sun Jun exhaled, exhaustion washing over him. The apocalypse had thrown its worst at them, and they had endured. Not alone, but together. And in that fragile alliance, he felt something stronger than thunder.

Hope.
