Chapter 6 - The Moment Everything Changed

Chapter 6

It started with blood.

Not his.

Someone else's.

Rain hammered against the tall windows of the penthouse as Ryuji Takeda stood in the dim light of his office. Two of his men were kneeling on the floor in front of him, one clutching a bleeding shoulder.

The room smelled of gunpowder and fear.

"Explain," Ryuji said calmly.

The wounded man swallowed.

"She… she interfered."

Ryuji's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Who?"

Before the man could answer, the office door suddenly opened.

Yumi Sato stepped inside.

Her clothes were wet from the rain. A faint cut marked her cheek, and there was blood on her sleeve that clearly wasn't hers.

But the way she walked in…

Confident.

Unafraid.

Made the entire room go silent.

Ryuji's men looked at her with shock.

She ignored them.

Her eyes went straight to Ryuji.

"I handled the problem," she said.

One of the guards immediately spoke up.

"She attacked three men alone!"

Yumi shrugged slightly.

"They were sloppy."

Ryuji didn't speak.

He just watched her.

Really watched her.

The rainwater sliding down her dark hair. The small cut on her face she didn't seem to care about. The steady way her eyes held his without fear.

Most people trembled in this room.

Most people avoided his gaze.

Yumi Sato didn't.

The injured man suddenly pointed at her.

"She's dangerous, boss. She shouldn't be here."

Ryuji slowly walked forward.

The room held its breath.

He stopped in front of Yumi and reached out.

His fingers lightly brushed the cut on her cheek.

Yumi stiffened.

"You're bleeding," he said quietly.

"It's nothing."

Ryuji looked at the blood on her sleeve.

"Not yours."

"No."

Silence stretched between them.

Then one of the men spoke again.

"Boss, she interfered with our operation. We should—"

"Enough."

The word was soft.

But it immediately silenced the entire room.

Ryuji's eyes never left Yumi.

"You fought three armed men," he said.

Yumi met his gaze evenly.

"They were in my way."

Something flickered in Ryuji's expression.

Not anger.

Something darker.

Something fascinated.

For the first time in years…

He felt it.

Interest.

Real interest.

Most people in his world were predictable.

Greedy.

Cowardly.

Weak.

But Yumi Sato stood in front of him with blood on her clothes and defiance in her eyes like she didn't care if he ordered her death.

And that…

Was dangerously appealing.

Ryuji turned toward his men.

"Leave."

The guards looked confused.

"Boss—"

"Now."

Within seconds the room emptied.

The door shut.

Now it was just the two of them.

The rain.

And the quiet tension filling the space between them.

Ryuji stepped closer.

"You're reckless," he said.

Yumi crossed her arms.

"You're welcome."

That made him laugh softly.

The sound was low and unexpected.

Then his hand suddenly moved—

He grabbed her wrist.

Not violently.

But firmly.

Yumi's eyes flashed.

"What are you doing?"

Ryuji studied her face closely.

Like he was trying to solve a puzzle.

"Most people fear me."

"Should I?"

"Probably."

Yumi didn't pull her hand away.

Instead she said quietly,

"I've faced worse things than you."

That was the moment.

The exact moment.

Something shifted inside Ryuji Takeda.

Something dangerous.

Something possessive.

His grip on her wrist tightened slightly.

Not enough to hurt.

Just enough to make sure she couldn't walk away.

"You're lying," he murmured.

"About what?"

"About not being afraid."

Yumi's heart was beating faster now.

But she refused to look away.

Ryuji leaned closer.

Close enough that their breaths nearly touched.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"Good."

Her brow furrowed.

"Good?"

His dark eyes locked onto hers with a strange intensity.

"Yes."

A slow smile appeared on his lips.

"Because if you were afraid…"

His thumb lightly brushed over her pulse.

"…you wouldn't be nearly as interesting."

Yumi felt a chill run down her spine.

And in that moment she understood something terrifying.

She hadn't just caught the attention of the most dangerous man in Tokyo.

She had awakened something in him.

Something that didn't let go.

Ryuji Takeda had just become obsessed.

And Yumi Sato had no idea how dangerous that would be.

Yumi tried to pull her wrist away.

Ryuji didn't let go.

Not immediately.

His fingers remained wrapped around her wrist, resting right over her pulse as if he could feel every beat of her heart.

"You should release me," Yumi said calmly.

Ryuji watched her for another second before finally letting go.

But the moment his hand left her wrist, he stepped even closer.

Close enough that she had to tilt her head slightly to look up at him.

"You fight well," he said.

"That surprises you?"

"A little."

Yumi crossed her arms.

"You don't look like a man who is easily surprised."

That made something flicker in his eyes.

"You'd be surprised what I notice."

The rain outside grew heavier, drumming against the glass windows of the penthouse.

Ryuji walked past her slowly and picked up a clean cloth from the table.

When he turned back toward her, Yumi frowned.

"What are you doing?"

He stepped closer again.

Then gently pressed the cloth against the small cut on her cheek.

Yumi froze.

"You're bleeding," he repeated.

"I told you it's nothing."

"Humor me."

His voice was quiet.

But there was something firm about it.

Like he expected her to listen.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

The air between them felt strangely heavy.

Dangerous.

Ryuji studied her face carefully as he cleaned the cut.

"You didn't hesitate tonight," he said.

Yumi looked at him.

"Hesitate about what?"

"Fighting."

His eyes moved slowly across her expression.

"Most people hesitate before they hurt someone."

Yumi looked away slightly.

"Most people haven't lived my life."

Ryuji noticed the change instantly.

The tension in her shoulders.

The way her gaze hardened.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

"You hate the Yakuza," he said calmly.

Yumi's eyes snapped back to his.

For a split second…

The truth flashed across her face.

Then it was gone.

But Ryuji had already seen it.

His lips curved slightly.

"So I'm right."

Yumi's voice was cold.

"You're the boss of the organization. Of course I hate you."

Ryuji chuckled softly.

"Honest."

He stepped back, tossing the cloth onto the table.

"I prefer that."

Yumi watched him carefully.

"You're not angry?"

"Should I be?"

"I just admitted I hate you."

Ryuji shrugged slightly.

"Hate is just another form of attention."

Then his eyes darkened.

"And I've already decided I like having yours."

Yumi's heart skipped.

She hated how easily he said things like that.

Like everything was a game.

Like he was always one step ahead.

Ryuji walked toward the large window overlooking the city.

The red neon lights reflected across the glass.

Tokyo stretched endlessly below them.

"Do you know why I let you stay here?" he asked.

Yumi didn't answer.

Because she wanted to know.

Ryuji turned his head slightly.

His eyes found hers again.

"You're dangerous."

Yumi blinked.

"That's not usually a compliment."

"It is in my world."

He walked back toward her slowly.

Every step measured.

Controlled.

"And dangerous people don't belong among ordinary ones."

He stopped in front of her again.

His gaze was intense now.

Almost possessive.

"They belong here."

Yumi's voice lowered.

"With criminals?"

"With me."

The words hung heavily in the air.

Yumi felt a strange mix of anger and something she didn't want to name.

"You don't even know me."

Ryuji smiled slightly.

"You're right."

His eyes gleamed.

"But I intend to."

Yumi stared at him.

"You sound very confident."

"I am."

"Why?"

Ryuji leaned down slightly so their faces were inches apart.

Because once Ryuji Takeda decided something…

He never changed his mind.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"Because you walked into my world, Yumi Sato."

His eyes locked onto hers.

"And people who walk into my world…"

His thumb lightly brushed the edge of her jaw.

"…rarely get to leave."

Yumi's breath caught.

Not because she was scared.

But because for the first time…

She believed him.

And somewhere deep inside her chest…

Something dangerous was beginning to change.
