Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Hates Her

Chapter 8

The tension inside the syndicate had been growing for days.

Everyone could see it.

Ryuji Takeda had been giving Yumi Sato too much attention.

Too much trust.

Too much access.

And in a world like the Yakuza…

That made enemies.

Yumi was walking through the underground training hall when she felt it.

The silence.

The room was empty.

Too empty.

Her instincts immediately sharpened.

She slowly stopped walking.

"Come out," Yumi said calmly.

A soft laugh echoed across the room.

"Your instincts are impressive."

A woman stepped out from the shadows.

Tall.

Elegant.

Dressed in black.

Her long dark hair fell neatly over her shoulders, and her eyes were cold.

Yumi recognized her instantly.

Keiko Nakamura.

One of Ryuji's most trusted captains.

And the woman rumored to have been at his side for years.

Keiko looked Yumi up and down with clear disgust.

"So you're the one," she said.

Yumi raised an eyebrow.

"The one what?"

"The one who thinks she can replace me."

Yumi sighed quietly.

"I'm not interested in replacing anyone."

Keiko smiled.

But there was nothing friendly about it.

"You should be careful with your lies."

Her hand moved slightly.

Yumi saw the knife just before Keiko attacked.

The blade flashed toward her throat.

Yumi reacted instantly, stepping back as the knife sliced through the air where her neck had been a second earlier.

The metal scraped loudly as Yumi grabbed Keiko's wrist.

They struggled briefly.

Then Yumi twisted hard.

The knife clattered across the floor.

Keiko kicked Yumi backward, creating distance.

Her eyes burned with anger now.

"You think you're special because the boss looks at you?"

Yumi steadied herself.

"You're attacking me over jealousy?"

"Jealousy?" Keiko laughed bitterly.

"You have no idea what I've done for him."

Her voice grew sharper.

"I've been at Ryuji's side for years. I helped build this organization."

Her gaze turned venomous.

"And now you walk in and suddenly he's watching you like you're the only person in the room."

Yumi's expression remained calm.

"That sounds like a problem between you and him."

That was the wrong thing to say.

Keiko lunged again.

This time with a gun.

The barrel aimed directly at Yumi's chest.

"You shouldn't have come here," Keiko said coldly.

Yumi's heart pounded.

But she didn't move.

Didn't beg.

Didn't panic.

That only made Keiko angrier.

"You're not even afraid," she hissed.

"No."

"Why?"

Yumi met her eyes.

"Because if you shoot me…"

Her voice was steady.

"…Ryuji will kill you."

For a moment the room went completely silent.

Then—

A slow clap echoed from the doorway.

Both women froze.

Ryuji Takeda stepped into the room.

His expression was calm.

But the air around him felt cold enough to freeze the entire building.

"Correct," he said quietly.

Keiko's face turned pale.

"Boss…"

Ryuji's dark eyes moved to the gun in her hand.

"Put it down."

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

That was enough.

Ryuji crossed the room in a few long strides.

Before Keiko could react, he grabbed the gun and ripped it from her hand.

Then he shoved her hard against the wall.

The impact echoed loudly.

Yumi blinked in surprise.

She had never seen him move that fast.

Ryuji's voice dropped dangerously low.

"Explain."

Keiko trembled.

"She doesn't belong here!"

Ryuji's grip tightened.

"And that gives you permission to kill her?"

"She's manipulating you!"

Ryuji's eyes flickered toward Yumi briefly.

Then back to Keiko.

His voice was colder now.

"Whether she manipulates me or not…"

His grip on Keiko's collar tightened.

"…is not your decision."

The room felt suffocatingly quiet.

Then Ryuji released her suddenly.

Keiko stumbled slightly.

Ryuji stepped between her and Yumi.

Positioning himself directly in front of Yumi.

Protecting her.

The message was clear.

His voice was calm again when he spoke.

"Leave."

Keiko stared at him in disbelief.

"You're choosing her?"

Ryuji's expression didn't change.

"I'm choosing discipline."

His eyes hardened.

"You attacked someone under my protection."

The words echoed heavily in the room.

Keiko's face fell.

Under my protection.

She looked at Yumi with pure hatred.

Then she turned and walked out.

The door slammed behind her.

Silence returned.

Yumi crossed her arms.

"Well… that was dramatic."

Ryuji turned toward her slowly.

His eyes scanned her quickly.

"Are you hurt?"

Yumi blinked.

"No."

"Good."

He stepped closer.

His gaze sharpened.

"You seem to make enemies quickly."

Yumi shrugged.

"I didn't start it."

Ryuji studied her face carefully.

Then something almost amused appeared in his expression.

"Interesting."

Yumi frowned.

"What is?"

Ryuji's voice dropped slightly.

"You didn't run."

"Should I have?"

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then said quietly,

"No."

His eyes darkened slightly.

"People who run don't survive in my world."

Then his gaze lingered on her face.

Just a second longer than necessary.

"And you…"

A faint smile appeared on his lips.

"…are starting to look like you belong in it."

Yumi didn't know whether that was a compliment…

Or a warning.
