The stairwell was swallowed by darkness.
Lucas gripped the metal pipe tightly.
"Kaelion…"
"…those sounds are getting louder."
Kaelion didn't answer.
His eyes were locked on the darkness of the stairs.
Predator Instinct was going wild.
This wasn't a faint warning like before.
This was an alarm.

Multiple footsteps.
Lucas swallowed.
"That's… not just one."
Kaelion tilted his head slightly.
Yeah.
More than one.
Then something appeared from the darkness.
A hand.
Rotting.
Gray skin.
Black nails.
Then another.
And another.
Lucas stepped back.
"Damn it…"
Three pairs of glowing yellow eyes appeared in the darkness.

The creatures slowly climbed the stairs.
Their heads hung low.
But their glowing eyes were locked onto Kaelion.
Lucas whispered,
"There are two of us…"
"…and three of them."
Kaelion raised his knife.
"Stop counting."
"Get ready."
At that moment Kaelion's vision flickered.
A purple light flashed before his eyes.
Lucas saw nothing.
But Kaelion did.

Kaelion's eyes narrowed.
"A quest…"
Lucas frowned.
"What?"
Kaelion shook his head.
"Nothing."
Suddenly one of the ghouls lunged forward.
Lucas shouted,
"It's coming!"
Predator Instinct screamed again.
Danger!
Kaelion jumped to the side.
The ghoul's claws ripped through the air.
Lucas swung the metal pipe.
The end of the pipe struck the creature's head.
But the ghoul only staggered.
The other two attacked as well.
"Kaelion!"
The second ghoul lunged at Lucas.
Lucas stepped back.
But the creature was fast.
At that moment Kaelion moved.
He lunged forward.
The knife flashed.
The blade cut into the creature's arm.
Black blood sprayed into the air.
But the third ghoul was coming from behind.
Predator Instinct screamed inside Kaelion's mind.
"Behind you!"
Kaelion spun around.
Claws were rushing toward his face.
Kaelion leaned backward.
The claws passed only centimeters above his hair.
Lucas saw the opening.
He raised the pipe with both hands.
Then slammed it down on the ghoul's head.
The creature staggered.
Kaelion didn't hesitate.
He stepped forward.
And drove the knife into the ghoul's neck.
The ghoul collapsed to the ground.
But the other two were still standing.
Lucas was breathing heavily.
"This night…"
"…is going to be long."
Kaelion looked toward the staircase.
Into the darkness.
The remaining ghouls were preparing to attack again.
And Kaelion now understood something.
This was only the beginning.
