Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Day of Secrets and Birthdays

Kael stared at the floor, the echoes of his family's history vibrating in his mind.

"So the hero who saved the world… was my uncle."

The words were a ghost of a whisper, swallowed by the silence of the room. A legacy of blood and light had been laid at his feet, but for a four-year-old, the weight was still a distant thing.

### Two Years Later

Time has a way of blurring the line between myth and reality. Kael was now six years old.

Early that morning, the pale light of dawn filtered through the curtains. Kael's mother entered his room, her footsteps soft on the rug. She nudged his shoulder, trying to coax him from the depths of sleep. Kael, however, was buried deep in his blankets, a stubborn fortress against the morning.

"Mom… good morning… but I'm still dreaming," he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep.

His mother sighed, though her eyes were bright with a secret warmth. "Oh, Kael. Today is your final exam. After this, you'll be promoted to the first grade." She began tidying his desk, glancing back with a playful smirk. "That is… if you actually manage to open your eyes."

Kael gave a slow, sleepy nod. "Okay, Mom. I'm up."

He shuffled toward the bathroom, the cold tiles finally waking his senses. As he began brushing his teeth, the rhythmic *scrub-scrub* filling the silence, a thought flickered in his mind.

*"Cursed… are you there?"*

The response was instantaneous—a dry, raspy resonance inside his skull. *"Yes… but I'm feeling just as sluggish as you are."*

Kael paused, foam dripping from his chin. "So souls need sleep too? I thought you were beyond that."

A soft chuckle echoed. *"Really, Kael? I didn't think you were that clueless. Existence is exhausting, regardless of whether you have a heartbeat."*

Kael rinsed his mouth and wiped his face. "Fair enough. By the way, I'm about to take a bath... so can you manifest in your physical form? It feels weird having you 'in' there."

Dark Smiler didn't skip a beat. *"No. I think I'll stay. I want to see if you actually remember to wash behind your ears."*

Kael didn't flinch. He just shrugged and stepped toward the tub. "Fine. Let's go."

For a moment, there was a stunned silence in his mind—then Dark Smiler burst into a roar of laughter. *"Fine! Fine! You win. Your lack of shame is truly legendary. I'll wait out here."*

In a swirl of gathering shadows near the sliding glass door, the air began to thicken. The darkness coalesced, growing solid and defined until a figure leaned casually against the frame.

He wore a dark, heavy hood that cast a deep shadow over his face. Strands of pitch-black hair escaped the fabric, and his eyes were terrifying—two endless voids that seemed to pull the light from the room. Despite the aura of death surrounding him, his silhouette was undeniably human.

It was the first time Kael had seen him fully manifested in the physical world. In this form, he wasn't just a voice; he was a person.

Kael stepped out of the bathroom, towel-drying his white hair. He stopped dead. "I... is that you, Cursed?"

The figure turned his head slightly. "It is."

Kael stared in genuine awe. "I wasn't ready for... this. But you look incredibly cool."

Dark Smiler reached out, his hand—solid and cold—resting briefly on Kael's head. "In this form, even 'normal' eyes can perceive me. I am no longer just a ghost in your machine."

Kael gasped. "Do you want to stay like this?"

Before the shadow could answer, a sharp *knock-knock* at the bedroom door shattered the moment.

In a blink, the figure dissolved into fine black dust, sucked into the air as if he had never been there. Kael pulled the door open to find his mother looking worried.

"Kael! You're going to be late for the finals!"

"I'm moving, Mom! I'm moving!"

As he scrambled to get dressed, he felt a pull in his mind. *"Kae—"* Dark Smiler started.

"I'm sorry, we'll talk later!" Kael cut him off, grabbing his bag and racing out the door.

### The Final Test

The school was a hive of nervous energy. Kael sat at his desk, stretching his arms until his joints popped.

"Hey, Kael!" a friend called out, leaning over. "Are you ready? I stayed up late studying the history of the Treaty."

Kael smiled, his golden eyes calm. "I think I've got it."

"I know you're the top of the class," the boy smirked, "but don't break my heart by scoring a perfect hundred again. Leave some glory for the rest of us."

Kael rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a bit sheepish. "Oh... I'll try?"

Another boy laughed, slapping Kael's shoulder. "Relax, he's just jealous. You're going to crush it."

The invigilator entered, and the room went dead silent. "Bags outside. Only pens and pencils. Your future starts now."

Kael looked at the paper. *Easy,* he thought. *Too easy.*

He finished early, walking out into the bright afternoon sun feeling a strange sense of relief. His mother was waiting at the gate. "Mom! I'm done! First grade, here I come!"

As they walked, Kael caught the hushed whispers of other parents nearby. *"Look at that boy... those eyes. They have to be lenses, right?"* He ignored them. He had bigger things on his mind.

"Mom, I'm starving. I skipped breakfast."

"I know, honey," she smiled, ruffling his hair. "I've got something special waiting at home."

### The Five Great Souls

Back in the quiet of his room, Kael sat on the edge of his bed. "Cursed? You wanted to say something earlier. I'm listening now."

The room chilled. Dark Smiler manifested again, his expression uncharacteristically grave. "Kael... it's time you understand the true architecture of this world."

Kael's playful mood evaporated. "Go on."

"There are four other souls bound to the fabric of this universe like I am," the shadow said, his voice dropping an octave. "And some of them... are far stronger than me."

Kael smirked, trying to hide his nerves. "Stronger than you? I haven't even seen what you can do yet."

Dark Smiler didn't laugh. "This isn't a joke, Kael. Listen. The first soul is me—**Dark Smiler, the Cursed.** The second is the **First Demon Lord**, the one who led the invasion. The third is the **Devil King**, a being whose power dwarfs even the demons. The fourth is the **Divine Soul**, the essence of the Gods who struck the Treaty."

He paused, the shadows in the room pulsing. "And the fifth... the most dangerous of all. **The Void.**"

Kael felt a shiver of pure, primal dread. "Wait... what exactly is 'The Void'?"

Dark Smiler's mouth curled into a small, mysterious smirk. "That is a story for another day. But for now... happy birthday, Kael."

Kael blinked, the realization hitting him. "My birthday... I totally forgot."

"I know," Dark Smiler said. "Tonight, I will show you an image of the Five. A glimpse into what you're up against. But first..."

*Knock. Knock.*

Dark Smiler vanished. His mother entered, holding a silk blindfold. "Kael! Come with me."

She led him into the living room, the fabric soft against his eyes. When she finally pulled it away, the room was a riot of streamers and balloons. "Surprise!"

Kael's heart swelled. "Mom... you did all this?"

"I couldn't let my big six-year-old go without a party," she said, handing him a set of fresh clothes. "Now get dressed. Your friends will be here any minute."

### An Unexpected Guest

The party was in full swing when a boy named Tatsuka waved Kael over. "Kael! You're finally here!"

Tatsuka pointed toward a girl standing near the refreshment table. She had long, dark hair and was fidgeting with the hem of her dress. Kael walked up to her, his golden eyes curious.

"Good evening, Shiya," he said politely.

She looked up at him, her face flushing a deep crimson. "K-Kael... happy birthday." She looked around the crowded room, her voice barely a whisper. "Is there... somewhere we can sit? Away from the noise?"

"Yeah, there are seats over by the—"

Before he could finish, Shiya reached out and grabbed his hand, her grip surprisingly tight. "I want to sit with you. Just us."

Kael felt his own face heat up. In the back of his mind, he heard a familiar, annoying cackle. *"Oh ho! She likes you, little king. Your first conquest!"*

*"Shut up!"* Kael barked internally.

He led Shiya to a quiet corner and sat beside her. She didn't let go of his hand. In fact, she held it even tighter, leaning her head toward him.

"Shiya... what are you doing?" Kael asked, his heart thumping.

"I just want to sit like this," she said softly, her eyes fixed on their joined hands. She looked up at him, her expression suddenly serious. "Do you remember... when we first met?"

Kael opened his mouth to answer, but realized he couldn't quite place the memory. It felt like a dream on the edge of his mind.

"Shut up," she said softly, a small, knowing smile playing on her lips before he could speak.

How they had met—and why her presence felt so vital—was a mystery yet to be unraveled. Kael looked at Shiya, then at his own pale hand in hers, wondering just how many more secrets this world was hiding from him.
