Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The Unknown Girl

### The Inner Circle

Kael turned toward Tatsuka, his movement slow and deliberate. For a single heartbeat, the warmth in his eyes didn't just fade—it died. What remained was a pair of molten-gold irises, cold and surgical, studying Tatsuka not as a friend, but as a puzzle to be solved... or a threat to be neutralized.

### The Hollow Meeting

**The Next Day**

The room was starved of light, an architectural void where the air felt heavy and suffocating. A single bulb flickered above a circular table, casting long, warped shadows that seemed to crawl across the walls.

Three chairs. Two were already occupied.

*Click.*

The door creaked open, and Tatsuka stepped in. He stopped instantly, the atmosphere pressing against his chest like lead.

"…So it's true," a distorted voice rasped from the gloom, sounding like gravel grinding against silk. "Is the task complete?"

Tatsuka lowered his head, his usual arrogance stripped away. "…Yes, sir." He paused, his voice trembling. "But… why? Why did you make me do that?"

A broken laugh echoed through the dark—dry, jagged, and devoid of humor. "You still don't understand, boy." Two crimson eyes ignited in the void. "Kael… had a brother."

Tatsuka's breath caught in his throat. "…That's impossible. He's an only child. I've seen his life. I've tracked everything."

"Not everything," the voice whispered. The shadows shifted, leaning closer. "His real mother is—"

Tatsuka froze. His face drained of all color, leaving him looking like a ghost in the dim light. "…Her?! You mean... *that* woman?"

Silence followed, thick and suffocating. Tatsuka slowly turned toward the second chair, where Shiya sat as still as a statue.

"…I didn't expect this," Tatsuka muttered, his voice barely audible. "Sister."

Shiya's gaze remained fixed on the table. "…Does he know?" she asked quietly.

A long, agonizing pause followed. "…I don't know."

### The Veil Lifts

Kael walked toward school, his thoughts looping in an endless, dizzying circle. The void sky. The empty chair. The way reality itself seemed to have… glitched.

*Thud.*

A hand tapped the back of his neck. Lighter than usual, yet the contact felt like a lightning strike.

"Kael? You spacing out again?"

Kael blinked, forcing his features to soften. "Oh… just thinking."

Tatsuka smirked, but his eyes were sharp. "Thinking about Dark Smiler?"

Kael froze. His heart slammed against his ribs. *"Cursed… do you know him?"* he projected frantically.

Inside his mind, Dark Smiler's voice was like ice. *"…No. And that is a problem."*

Kael forced a calm he didn't feel. "…Who's Dark Smiler?"

Tatsuka's smirk didn't fade; it deepened. "Don't bother with the act. I already know. You're hosting a soul." He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a whisper. "A Cursed one."

Kael leaned in, his golden eyes flashing. "…Please. Don't tell anyone."

Tatsuka paused, studying him for a moment. "…Relax. I won't."

"…How do you know?" Kael pressed, his mind racing through a thousand possibilities.

Tatsuka opened his mouth to answer, but a soft voice cut through the air like glass. "Hi, Kael."

Shiya. She stood a few feet away, her expression unreadable. "You're late," she said simply.

Kael exhaled slowly. "You too."

Her eyes lingered on him, searching for something. "…What were you two talking about?"

"Nothing," both boys said instantly.

The walk continued in a strained silence until Shiya spoke again. "Kael... those daggers. The black ones. How do you summon them from nothing?"

Kael stopped walking. He slowly turned, his golden eyes narrowing until they were mere slits of light. "…You remember that? Why are you asking me this now?"

Tatsuka and Shiya exchanged a look—a silent, heavy communication that Kael was excluded from. "…Forget it," Tatsuka said, breaking the tension. "We won't ask again."

"…Promise?"

"…Yeah."

"…Promise."

Kael watched them walk ahead. He didn't believe a word of it.

### The Omen

At the school gate, reality broke.

A figure stood in the middle of the road. It was pure black—not a shadow, not a human, but a hole in the world. It was watching him with an intensity that felt like a physical weight.

Then, it was gone.

"…What the hell…?" Kael muttered. A streetlight buzzed overhead, flickering in the morning sun, but no one else reacted. He turned to Tatsuka. "…Did you see that?"

"…No," Tatsuka snapped. The answer was too fast, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles were white.

### The Revelation

**After School**

Under the shade of the old oak tree, the air was unnaturally still.

"…Tell me the truth," Kael said, his voice echoing. "How do you know about me? The daggers. The soul. All of it."

Silence.

Tatsuka and Shiya looked at each other, and then, in a terrifying unison, they spoke.

"We are—"

The words hit Kael like a physical blow, a secret so heavy it felt like something was breaking inside his chest. He staggered back, his breath hitching. "…What?"

They nodded. No hesitation. No regret. The lines between friend and enemy, human and monster, didn't just blur—they disappeared entirely.

### The Crimson Letter

Night had fallen, and Kael's room was a cavern of shadows.

"…You knew," Kael said quietly to the corner of the room.

Dark Smiler stood by the window, his form half-swallowed by the night. "…Yes."

Kael's jaw tightened. "…Then why didn't you tell me?"

No answer. Only the cold silence of the room.

"Kael! Your friend is here!" his mother called from downstairs.

Kael rushed down and flung the door open. Nothing. Only a white envelope resting on the mat.

"…Mom, no one's here."

"That's strange," she said, looking over his shoulder. "A girl was just there. Red eyes. Crimson hair. She was very pretty... I thought she was a classmate."

Kael's pulse spiked. "…What?"

"She left just as you were coming down."

Kael grabbed the letter, his hands shaking. Back in the safety of his room, he stared at the seal. "…Should I open it?"

*"Open it,"* Dark Smiler whispered.

Kael tore it open.

> *Hi Kael,*

> *I am **DEMON LORD**. (45131514 1215184)*

> *You are the one who lives with the Cursed—Dark Smiler. Come to City Park. December 25th. I have something to tell you.*

> *— Your best friend.*

>

Kael's hands trembled so hard the paper rattled. "…Eight months. She wants me to wait eight months?"

Behind him, Dark Smiler was smiling. But his eyes—the voids within his hood—had gone completely, terrifyingly dark.

"…Do you know her?" Kael whispered.

"…No."

The answer was too quick. Too smooth. The smile didn't fade.

In that moment, Kael finally understood. The Demon Lord wasn't a legend from a history book. She wasn't distant. She had already walked onto his porch, and she was closer than he could ever imagine.
