Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: Fish vs Submarine

The Archivist was still emerging from the Author's chamber when the Iron Ocean suddenly changed.

The molten currents stopped flowing normally.

Instead they rippled outward, as if something massive had disturbed the metal sea.

Inside the submarine, warning alarms flickered.

SONAR CONTACT DETECTED

Jack leaned toward the console.

"Oh good," he said flatly. "Another thing trying to kill us."

Dave activated the external sensors.

The sonar screen lit up with movement.

Not one signal.

Not ten.

Hundreds.

Shapes moved rapidly through the molten iron, weaving between the colossal pillars of the cradle's structure.

Ava frowned.

"Those aren't debris signatures."

David zoomed the sonar image.

The shapes sharpened.

Long bodies.

Armored fins.

Dense internal cores that glowed faintly through the metal currents.

Jack blinked.

"…are those fish?"

Dave stared.

"They're huge fish."

The System chimed immediately.

New Entities Detected

Designation: Ferric Leviathan Fry

Common Name: Ironfish

Habitat: Iron Ocean

Threat Level: Moderate

Jack raised both hands.

"I refuse to fight lava fish."

One of the shapes accelerated.

Then another.

Then the entire swarm turned toward the submarine.

Dave's eyes widened.

"Too late."

The first Ironfish slammed into the hull.

CLANG

The submarine rocked violently.

Warning lights flashed.

HULL INTEGRITY: 96%

Jack grabbed the railing.

"Okay those fish hit like trucks!"

Outside the viewport, dozens of massive metallic fish circled the submarine.

Each one nearly the size of a bus.

Their bodies were plated with iron scales that glowed faintly red under the immense pressure.

Ava analyzed the sensor data quickly.

"They're attracted to the energy output."

David nodded.

"The submarine's reactor looks like prey."

Another Ironfish rammed the hull.

CLANG

Hull integrity dropped to 93%.

Jack shouted.

"Dave! Do something!"

Dave grabbed the control panel.

"I'm trying!"

He activated the external defense grid.

The submarine released a burst of electrical energy into the molten ocean.

The shockwave blasted several Ironfish backward.

But the swarm only became more aggressive.

Dozens surged forward at once.

Simon whispered urgently.

"Dave… they're hunting in coordinated patterns."

Dave noticed it too.

The fish weren't mindless.

They were herding the submarine.

Jack saw their trajectory.

"Oh no."

Dave followed the sonar path.

The swarm was pushing them in one direction.

Toward the opening chamber.

Toward the Archivist.

Ava's voice turned sharp.

"They're driving us into the Guardian."

David frowned.

"That can't be coincidence."

Dave activated Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint.

Golden threads filled his vision again.

The fish suddenly had narrative tags.

Ironfish Behavior Pattern

Role: Environmental Pressure

Narrative Function: Force Movement

Dave groaned.

"Great."

Jack glanced at him.

"What now?"

Dave pointed ahead.

"The story wants us to meet the Archivist."

Another Ironfish slammed into the hull.

HULL INTEGRITY: 88%

Jack grabbed the navigation stick.

"Then let's meet it on our terms."

He pushed the submarine engines to maximum.

The vessel surged forward through the molten currents.

Ironfish swarmed behind them like a metallic tornado.

Dave watched the sonar.

"They're faster!"

One of the fish lunged forward and bit the tail stabilizer.

The entire submarine spun sideways.

HULL INTEGRITY: 84%

Jack shouted.

"Okay I take it back! I hate fish!"

Ava activated the magnetic pulse emitters.

A wave of magnetic force exploded outward.

Several Ironfish were thrown violently into the surrounding metal pillars.

But more kept coming.

Dave activated the Reader's Viewpoint again.

This time he focused on the swarm leader.

The System highlighted one larger signal.

Ironfish Alpha

Narrative Weight: High

Eliminate to disperse swarm.

Reward: EXP

Dave grinned slightly.

"Okay."

Jack glanced at him.

"You just made that face again."

Dave pointed at the sonar.

"Big one. Front left."

Jack swung the submarine hard.

The massive Ironfish Alpha surged forward to intercept them.

Its armored head smashed directly toward the submarine like a living battering ram.

Dave armed the forward harpoon launcher.

"Let's go fishing."

The Alpha lunged.

At the last second Jack rolled the submarine sideways.

Dave fired.

THUNK

The harpoon pierced the Alpha's core plating.

Dave hit the second trigger.

The harpoon detonated.

The molten ocean flashed white.

The Alpha fish shattered into molten fragments.

The System chimed.

Enemy Eliminated

Ferric Leviathan Alpha

EXP Gained: 2,200

The swarm immediately scattered.

Ironfish fled in every direction.

Jack leaned back in his chair.

"…that's the weirdest dogfight I've ever been in."

Dave wiped sweat from his forehead.

"Fish fight."

The submarine stabilized.

Silence returned.

Then the molten ocean ahead parted slowly.

The massive silhouette of the Archivist stepped fully out of the Author's chamber.

Towering.

Colossal.

Watching them.

The System updated again.

Guardian Encounter Initiated

Entity: Archivist

Difficulty: Extreme

Reward: ???

Dave checked the experience counter.

Enough for another level.

He exhaled slowly.

"Well."

Jack looked up at the towering Guardian outside the viewport.

"…we killed the fish."

Dave nodded.

"Now we fight the librarian."

The Archivist's eyes opened.

The molten ocean trembled.

And the real battle was about to begin.

To be continued… 🌑
