The chamber beneath the Iron Ocean continued to open.
Each shift of the colossal plates sounded like continents grinding together. Molten iron poured down the exposed walls in glowing waterfalls, illuminating the sleeping Author deeper within the structure.
Inside the submarine, Dave's golden interface still filled half his vision.
The 3% survival thread pulsed faintly.
Jack leaned against the console.
"So let me summarize our situation," he said. "Ancient cosmic writer waking up. Planet-sized prison failing. Mysterious outside reader editing reality. And now you might have to jump into the story like some kind of protagonist."
Dave sighed.
"When you say it like that it sounds bad."
"It is bad."
The System suddenly chimed.
A softer tone this time.
Not a warning.
A notification.
Experience Gained
Core-Born Sentinel Eliminated
Cradle Stabilization Completed
Trial Two Success
Total EXP Acquired: 4,850
Dave blinked.
"…wait."
Jack squinted.
"Did that say experience?"
Ava leaned closer to the display.
"It did."
David folded his arms.
"So the System runs on progression mechanics."
Dave rubbed his forehead.
"Why does everything in this universe run like a game?"
Future Dave answered calmly.
"Because structured progression makes observers easier to evaluate."
Jack muttered, "Of course it does."
The System window expanded.
Level Up Available
Current Level: 7 → 8
Enhancement Options:
• Cognitive Processing +12%
• Narrative Perception +9%
• Neural Stability +15%
Bonus Skill Unlock Chance: Low
Dave stared.
"…I can level up."
Ava looked impressed despite the chaos outside.
"That's useful."
David nodded.
"Increasing neural stability might help with the Reader's Viewpoint."
Jack raised a hand.
"Or we boost brain power so you can out-think the cosmic author."
Dave sighed.
"Why am I the one doing the thinking?"
Simon whispered inside his mind.
"Because the chain chose you."
Dave hesitated.
Then selected Neural Stability.
The System confirmed instantly.
Level Up Complete
Level: 8
Neural Stability Increased
EXP Remaining: 1,320
The effect was immediate.
The pressure inside Dave's head eased.
The overwhelming flood of probability threads from the Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint stabilized slightly.
He exhaled slowly.
"…okay."
"That actually helped."
Ava nodded.
"The skill was straining your brain."
David looked thoughtful.
"The System is adapting to the trials."
Jack crossed his arms.
"So basically the universe just gave you a stat upgrade before the boss fight."
Future Dave glanced toward the opening chamber below.
"Correct."
Outside—
the molten plates shifted again.
The chamber opened wide enough now that the shape of the Author could be seen clearly.
It looked like a massive figure composed of shifting script-like symbols and flowing energy, curled in a sleeping position at the heart of the structure.
Each pulse from it distorted reality slightly.
Dave activated the Reader's Viewpoint again.
This time the strain was manageable.
New data appeared.
Author Awakening Progress
17%
Narrative Instability: Rising
Dave frowned.
"It's waking faster."
Simon whispered.
"The external reader thread is brighter too."
Dave checked.
The probability thread from outside the system had grown thicker.
The System updated again.
External Reader Influence
16%
Jack groaned.
"Stop increasing numbers I don't like."
Ava studied the threads carefully.
"If the external reader keeps interfering…"
"…the Author might wake prematurely."
David nodded.
"And once that happens, the Entity may lose control of containment."
Future Dave finally looked at Dave again.
"You need more experience."
Dave blinked.
"That's your advice?"
Future Dave nodded toward the rising structure below.
"There will be more trials."
The System chimed again as if confirming his words.
Upcoming Trial Detected
Scenario Title:
"Guardian of the Author's Gate"
Difficulty Rating: Extreme
Reward: High EXP
Jack sighed loudly.
"Of course there's a gatekeeper."
Dave rubbed his face.
"So we grind experience by fighting cosmic guardians now."
Simon whispered softly.
"You're getting stronger, Dave."
Dave looked at the glowing interface again.
Level 8.
Reader's Viewpoint.
Narrative threads.
External readers.
Sleeping Authors.
He laughed quietly.
"…I miss normal problems."
Outside—
the deepest gate of the Author's chamber began to open.
Something enormous moved behind it.
The System immediately issued another alert.
Guardian Entity Detected
Designation: Archivist
Role: Protector of the Author
Threat Level: Catastrophic
The molten ocean trembled violently.
The silhouette behind the gate shifted forward.
Jack stared at the viewport.
"…please tell me that's not the thing we have to fight."
Dave looked at the rising shape.
The Reader's Viewpoint labeled the incoming entity.
Narrative Role: Gatekeeper
Required for progression.
Dave sighed.
"…yeah."
"It's definitely the thing we have to fight."
Outside—
the Archivist stepped out of the Author's chamber for the first time in ages.
And the System quietly calculated the experience reward.
To be continued…
