The claim was nearly impossible to accept.

A new, stable, useful 119th element, synthesized by a private company on its opening day, was the kind of announcement that should have produced, at minimum, an organized chorus of professional skepticism. Several hundred senior energy and physics figures were sitting in the reception hall, and any one of them could have stood up to demand verification.

Not one of them did.

The silence was, in its own way, the most damning evidence of all. The room had run the same calculation Pieter Harris had just run. If there was no new element, then there was no functioning seabed reactor. If there was no functioning seabed reactor, then there was no plausible explanation for the warships, the deployment, the surging storage readout, and the personal appearance of the Director of the National Energy Ministry on the stage to vouch for it all.

Every piece of evidence the room had seen this morning could be explained only by the existence of the impossible thing Ethan had just claimed.

So no one challenged the claim. No one even tried.

On the stage, Ethan made a slow, deliberate gesture with one hand.

The single rotating sphere of light expanded.

It grew outward, the magnification scaling smoothly until the rendered atomic structure no longer floated above the audience but enveloped them, the entire reception hall briefly transformed into the interior of a single atom. Electron orbitals traced themselves through the air. Nuclear bond geometries hung at eye level. Several hundred senior figures sat inside a magnified element none of them had ever seen, and the effect, even on people who did not understand the nuclear physics, was breathtaking.

"It is stable in seawater," Ethan said quietly, his voice carrying through the projection. "Radiation output is several orders of magnitude beyond any conventional fissile or fusible material. These are the properties of the element my company has synthesized."

The audience stared at the lattice around them, the way visitors at a planetarium stared at the projected geometry of a distant galaxy. Something close to obsession moved through several of the older physicists in the room.

"I have given the element a name," Ethan said, allowing himself a small, dry smile. "I have called it mercerium."

He let the name land.

The choice was unsubtle. He knew it was unsubtle. He had been advised, when first registering the discovery, that naming a brand-new element after himself was the kind of decision the global physics community would describe, in private correspondence, as unbecoming. He had considered the criticism, weighed it carefully, and decided he did not particularly care.

It was his element. He had made it. He could call it whatever he wanted.

His explanation, with the name delivered, came to its conclusion. The hall sat in its shocked silence, the audience still absorbing the implications of an element that had not existed a year ago.

Xavier Holt, who had been standing patiently to the side, took the cue.

He stepped forward to the front of the stage.

"There is one further matter," Holt said, "that the Energy Ministry wishes to make a matter of public record this morning."

The room, which had been silent, became more silent.

"The Ministry has formally entered into a deep cooperative partnership with Director Mercer and New Future Technology Energy. Through a combination of capital contribution, technical resource sharing, and personnel allocation, the state holds, as of today, a twenty percent equity stake in the company."

The reception hall produced a small, collective, involuntary sound. It was not quite a gasp. It was the sound of several hundred people simultaneously processing a piece of information they had not previously thought possible.

The Energy Ministry was, in practical terms, an instrument of the state. The Republic of Valoria standing behind a private firm with twenty percent of its equity was, by any meaningful measure, the state declaring itself a stakeholder. What surprised the room more sharply, however, was the structure of the involvement.

In the third row, Pieter Harris had finally sat back down. His expression had darkened entirely.

When the situation is abnormal, Harris thought, there is always something underneath.

He had spent four decades dealing with the Republic of Valoria in commercial and political contexts. He understood the Republic's preferences. The state generally operated in two modes. Either it took full control of an asset and ran it as a state enterprise, or it stayed entirely out of the way and let private firms compete according to law.

What the state had just done was neither. The state had taken equity without taking control. It was an arrangement Harris had never seen the Republic offer to a private firm before.

The arrangement was not, however, opaque to him. It told Harris something specific: the Republic of Valoria regarded Ethan Mercer personally as more valuable than the technology he had produced, and was structuring its involvement to preserve his autonomy because his future output was deemed more important than current institutional capture.

The Republic was, in other words, betting on the man.

And Harris understood, with cold clarity, what that bet meant for everyone in Harris's industry.

Beside Harris, Liam Rouse was no longer paying attention to anything Harris was thinking. Rouse's mind had collapsed into a single tight knot of panic. The newborn company he had spent the morning openly mocking was, in his updated estimate, going to obliterate Sterling Energy within a small number of years. He cared, very much, about whether Ethan Mercer was a man who held grudges.

His memory replayed, unbidden, the parking structure. The slap on the young guard's face. The shoulder-checked sedan. The cold, dismissive one-second look Ethan had given him on the stage.

Rouse closed his eyes.

He wished, with sudden and total clarity, that he had simply waited his turn in line.

On the stage, Xavier Holt continued without acknowledging the room's collective reaction.

"What you saw on the screen earlier today was Seabed Reactor Number Two. Director Mercer named it accurately. There are, in fact, more."

The hall went still again.

"Over the past three months, the Republic and New Future Technology Energy have jointly developed and supervised the production of nine additional reactors. The first is operational on the floor of the Southern Sea. Eight more are, at this moment, being deployed in succession along the southern and eastern coastal waters of the Republic. Once all ten reactors are online, which will occur within the current quarter, the combined output of the array will be approximately three times the total energy consumption of the entire Eastern Region."

A murmur began to rise in the hall.

Holt raised one hand. The murmur subsided.

"To make the implication explicit," he said. "Once the conversion of the Eastern Region's grid infrastructure is complete, the Eastern Region will never experience energy shortage again. The West-East Power Corridor program, which has consumed billions of marks in annual operating cost since its inception, will be retired permanently. It will leave the historical stage."

The reception hall did not erupt.

It collapsed.

The audience had spent the morning suspended in a long sequence of disbelief, recovery, fresh disbelief, and partial acceptance. Each new revelation had been calibrated, deliberately, to be slightly larger than the previous one. Holt's final statement broke the entire structure of the audience's expectations.

The West-East Power Corridor was not a marginal program. It was a generational national infrastructure project, the largest civilian engineering effort in the Republic's modern history, the program that had defined the country's industrial energy strategy for two decades. It moved electricity across the continent in volumes that few other transmission systems on the planet could match. It had been built at staggering cost and was operated at staggering cost.

The reception hall, several hundred of the Republic's most senior figures, finally understood, all at once, what Ethan's earlier promise had actually meant.

When he had said, on this stage, that New Future Technology Energy would resolve the national energy shortage within three months, he had not been boasting. He had not been delusional. He had not been speaking aspirationally about a long-term vision.

He had been describing, plainly and accurately, work that was substantially already complete.

The promise was real.

The promise had been real the moment he made it.

For a long, slow moment, the reception hall sat with the realization.

Then a reporter in the press section stood up.

"Director Mercer," the reporter shouted, his voice cutting across the hall with no regard whatsoever for press-section decorum, "well done."

The praise opened the floodgates.

A second voice from a different section of the press picked it up. Then a third. Within seconds, the entire hall, the reporters, the executives, the cabinet officials, the academy fellows, all of it, was on its feet, applauding.

"Outstanding work. The founding of New Future Technology Energy is going to permanently improve the standard of living of the Valorian people."

"A man who serves both the nation and its people. Director Mercer is, by any standard that matters, worthy of respect."

"It is not an exaggeration to say that, on the strength of the seabed reactor program alone, the name Ethan Mercer now carries weight equal to Hargrove's. And he is eighteen."

"The Republic has produced a generational talent. A scholar of the state, and at his age. We are fortunate."

The applause built into a sustained ovation.

On the stage, Ethan, who was generally composed under public attention, found himself genuinely moved. He bowed in acknowledgment. He kept bowing. The applause continued.

Beside him on the stage, Yvette Caldwell brought her palms together and applauded with the rest of the room. Her applause was measured and elegant in a way the room's was not, but it was, in its way, equally genuine.

She watched her Chairman accepting the room's recognition, and she found herself running, in the quiet space behind her composed face, a small unprompted accounting.

Yvette had, when she joined New Future Technology Energy three months ago, accepted the role partly because Hargrove had asked her to and partly because Ethan had impressed her sufficiently at the dinner to make the gamble seem worthwhile.

But the gamble had been a gamble.

She had not arrived at the company with full conviction. She had, privately, considered the possibility that she had taken a step downward.

By any external measure, the move had not made sense. Yvette Caldwell, before joining New Future, was the principal shareholder of Caldwell Holdings, a multi-billion-mark commercial group she had built herself, from nothing, in under a decade. In her established commercial life, she walked into rooms and rooms turned toward her. Her opinions were sought. Her presence was a signal. She had the kind of professional weight that took most operators a lifetime to accumulate.

In coming to New Future Technology Energy, she had accepted a salary, an equity grant smaller than the holdings she already controlled, and the title of President, which was structurally subordinate to Chairman.

She had told herself, in the first few weeks, that the move was a favor to Hargrove and a sensible diversification of her professional portfolio. But she had also, in the privacy of her own evaluation, allowed for the possibility that she had agreed to the arrangement for sentimental rather than rational reasons. If it had not been for Hargrove, and for the strange, unconventional young man who had climbed through her office window with an offer, she would not have come.

She had never imagined, in her wildest projections, that her Junior Brother would prove to be this.

The company had opened its doors this morning. And by the end of the same morning, the company had, in front of the cabinet and the national press, demonstrated that it was going to solve the energy supply problem of the entire Eastern Region within the current quarter.

Yvette did not need to perform the calculation a second time to know what that meant. New Future Technology Energy was not going to merely enter the Fortune Global 500 within a few years. It was going to enter the top of it. The seabed reactor program alone, fully deployed, would push the company's market valuation into the high hundreds of billions of marks before the end of the first fiscal year.

She had, three months ago, considered herself a wealthy and accomplished woman who had taken a slightly sentimental side project.

She was, this morning, the executive officer of what was about to become one of the most consequential commercial entities on the planet.

She kept her face composed and continued to applaud.

Internally, she allowed herself one private, quiet thought.

Mercer. You have far exceeded my expectations. And I think you are about to lose our bet.
