Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 — The Empire’s Shadow

Night settled heavily over Ironbone Forest.

The wind whispered quietly through the tall black trees, carrying the scent of damp soil and distant blood. Above the forest canopy, clouds slowly drifted across the sky, dimming the moonlight.

Hidden deep within the forest, Kael Varyn sat cross-legged beside a dying fire.

The faint orange glow illuminated half of his face while the other half remained swallowed by darkness.

Inside his body, the Shadow Core rotated slowly.

With every breath, dark spiritual energy flowed into his meridians.

The power of the Hollow Abyss had grown calmer since his last battle.

But calm did not mean harmless.

Kael could still feel it beneath the surface.

Watching.

Waiting.

Hungry.

His eyes slowly opened.

The fire crackled softly.

Then he spoke quietly.

"You've been watching long enough."

Silence.

For several seconds, the forest did not respond.

Then—

A voice came from the darkness beyond the trees.

"Your senses are impressive for someone at your level."

A figure stepped into the firelight.

The man wore a long black cloak embroidered with a small silver emblem on the chest.

A single silver eye symbol.

Kael recognized it instantly.

The Empire.

More specifically—

The Imperial Intelligence Division.

Often called "The Emperor's Eyes."

The man's expression remained calm as he studied Kael.

"You are Kael Varyn."

Kael did not stand.

"Yes."

The man's gaze sharpened slightly.

"You're calmer than I expected."

Kael shrugged faintly.

"If you wanted to kill me, you wouldn't have revealed yourself."

The agent smiled slightly.

"Sharp."

Two more figures stepped out from the shadows behind him.

Both carried curved blades at their waists.

Imperial assassins.

Even their breathing was nearly impossible to hear.

Kael observed them quietly.

Three imperial agents.

Well trained.

But none of them radiated overwhelming spiritual pressure.

Meaning they were not here to capture him by force.

Interesting.

The first man folded his hands behind his back.

"My name is Arlen Voss."

"Imperial Observer."

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

Observers were not simple spies.

They were individuals responsible for monitoring unusual cultivators or emerging threats.

Which meant—

The Empire already considered Kael important enough to watch.

Arlen continued speaking.

"You've done something very unusual, Kael Varyn."

"Oh?"

"An outer disciple defeating three cultivators stronger than himself."

"Then disappearing into Ironbone Forest."

Arlen's gaze grew more intense.

"And surviving."

Kael leaned slightly against the rock behind him.

"Is that illegal?"

"No."

Arlen smiled faintly.

"But it's… interesting."

The two assassins behind him remained completely silent.

Like statues.

Arlen continued.

"The Empire monitors unusual talents."

"Especially those not controlled by sects."

Kael understood immediately.

Sects and the Empire had a complicated relationship.

The sects held great power.

But the Empire constantly searched for ways to balance that power.

Independent cultivators were valuable tools.

Kael tilted his head slightly.

"So the Empire is recruiting?"

Arlen chuckled quietly.

"Not exactly."

He studied Kael more carefully.

"We're evaluating."

A faint breeze moved through the clearing.

The fire flickered.

Kael's expression remained calm, but his mind moved quickly.

This was earlier than he expected.

Much earlier.

He had planned to remain hidden for several months before attracting attention.

But now the Empire had already noticed him.

Dangerous.

But also…

An opportunity.

Arlen continued.

"Tell me something, Kael."

"How did you defeat those disciples?"

Kael looked directly into the man's eyes.

"Luck."

Arlen laughed.

"That answer might fool the sect elders."

"But not me."

Silence followed.

The forest seemed to hold its breath.

Finally Arlen spoke again.

"You're practicing something unusual."

Not a question.

A statement.

Kael did not deny it.

Arlen slowly walked closer to the fire.

"You know what happens to cultivators who follow forbidden paths."

"Execution."

"Yes."

"But that only applies if the sect reports it."

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

Arlen stopped a few steps away.

The firelight reflected in his silver emblem.

"The Empire doesn't care how someone gains power," he said quietly.

"As long as that power can be… useful."

Now the real conversation had begun.

Kael could see it clearly.

The Empire was testing him.

Not threatening.

Testing.

He slowly stood up.

The shadow mist around him moved slightly with the motion.

The assassins behind Arlen shifted subtly.

Their hands moved closer to their weapons.

Arlen raised a hand slightly.

"Relax."

Then he looked back at Kael.

"You have potential."

"But potential alone means nothing."

His eyes sharpened.

"Show me something interesting."

The challenge hung in the air between them.

Kael remained silent for a moment.

Then he smiled faintly.

"Very well."

He raised his hand slowly.

Black mist appeared around his fingers.

Dark energy twisted like smoke.

The assassins' eyes widened slightly.

Arlen watched with deep interest.

Kael's voice was quiet.

"Abyss Devour."

The shadows around the clearing suddenly deepened.

For a brief moment, the fire itself seemed to dim.

Arlen's smile slowly faded.

The assassins stiffened.

Because what they felt in that moment was not ordinary spiritual energy.

It felt like standing near a bottomless pit.

Cold.

Endless.

Hungry.

The mist disappeared after only a few seconds.

Kael lowered his hand.

Silence filled the clearing.

Arlen stared at him for a long moment.

Then—

He began laughing softly.

"Interesting…"

Very interesting.

The assassins behind him were far less comfortable.

One of them whispered quietly.

"That power… what is it?"

Arlen shook his head slightly.

"Something new."

He looked back at Kael.

"The Empire will continue watching you."

Kael shrugged slightly.

"I assumed as much."

Arlen turned to leave.

But before disappearing into the forest, he spoke one last time.

"Grow stronger, Kael Varyn."

"Because if that power becomes uncontrollable…"

His voice became colder.

"The Empire will be the one that ends you."

Then the three figures vanished into the darkness.

The forest returned to silence.

Kael stood alone beside the fire.

For a moment he said nothing.

Then he looked toward the direction where the imperial agents had disappeared.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"The Empire's Eyes…"

Good.

Very good.

Because if the Empire was watching him…

Then one day—

They would witness something far greater than they expected.

Kael extinguished the fire with a wave of shadow energy.

Darkness swallowed the clearing.

And somewhere deep within his mind…

The Hollow Abyss whispered again.

"Hunger…"

Kael closed his eyes.

"Soon."

Because the game had finally begun.

And now—

Even the Empire had stepped onto the board.

Arc 1 finish.
