Chapter 14 - Chapter 13 — The Watcher in the Dark

Dawn was slow to pierce the canopy of Ironbone Forest.

Silver light barely reached the forest floor, turning the dense undergrowth into shifting shadows. The air smelled of wet soil and decaying leaves, heavy with the scent of beasts returning to their dens.

Kael Varyn moved silently along the winding forest path. His steps made no sound. No twig snapped beneath his feet. Every movement was measured, controlled.

The events of the previous night still lingered in his mind. The Empire's eyes had observed him.

The memory of Arlen Voss's words—"Grow stronger, Kael Varyn. Because if that power becomes uncontrollable, the Empire will be the one that ends you"—replayed with unnerving clarity.

Kael did not fear them.

Instead, he welcomed them.

The Empire's interest was both a threat and an opportunity.

If the powerful factions of the world now knew of his existence, then every move he made must be calculated. Every step, every encounter, every slight action… a message.

Kael paused. He closed his eyes.

The Hollow Abyss within him pulsed quietly, its dark hunger whispering faintly at the edges of his consciousness.

Hunger… more…

The whisper had grown stronger than before.

Kael exhaled slowly. "Patience. Not yet."

Opening his eyes, he scanned the forest. Something was off. Not the usual movement of beasts. Not the regular flow of spiritual energy.

Someone was following him.

Not nearby—no. Far enough to remain undetected, but close enough to observe.

Kael's lips curved into a faint, almost imperceptible smile.

Interesting.

He stopped abruptly, crouching low behind a moss-covered rock. The undergrowth concealed him perfectly.

From above, a faint shadow moved between the branches of an ancient tree. Kael's senses immediately detected it.

Ah… the Empire's watcher.

The figure remained perfectly still, almost blending into the bark. Even without looking directly at her, Kael could sense her breathing pattern, the subtle shifting of weight, the faint spiritual energy masking her presence.

Seris Vale, he thought, remembering the silver eye emblem Arlen had mentioned. A shadow observer… cunning, patient, skilled.

He did not need to act immediately. Let her watch.

Kael began walking again, deliberately slowing his pace. His shadow stretched across the forest floor like a living thing, twisting with every step.

Above, Seris adjusted her posture, moving silently to keep pace without being detected. She could feel it now—the unnatural power radiating from him. A spiritual energy unlike anything she had ever recorded.

Forbidden cultivation… or something far older…

Kael stopped once more, standing in the center of a small clearing. Light barely touched this place, leaving him in near darkness. He exhaled and let the Shadow Core hum within him.

The black mist began to drift outward from his body, swirling like smoke in the cold morning air.

Seris froze.

That energy—it isn't ordinary…

She watched carefully as the mist condensed into thin threads of darkness, coiling and twisting like serpents. Each thread pulsed with hunger. It was alive.

Kael lowered his hand slowly and whispered, "Let's begin."

From the edge of the clearing, a Crimson Fang Boar charged without warning. Its red fur was streaked with dried blood, tusks gleaming in the faint light. The beast's spiritual aura was intense—far beyond ordinary forest creatures.

Kael didn't flinch.

"Submit," he murmured, extending his hand.

The black mist surged forward like water through a broken dam, wrapping around the boar's massive body. The creature roared, thrashing violently, but Kael's presence pressed upon it like an unyielding force.

The Abyss Devour Technique activated. Black tendrils of energy sank into the boar's body, draining its spiritual essence. The forest seemed to dim as the dark mist swallowed the boar's life energy.

Seris's eyes widened. Even she had seen demonic techniques before, forbidden arts capable of draining life, but nothing like this. It was older… primordial… beyond her training.

The boar finally collapsed, defeated, its energy absorbed by Kael's Shadow Core. The dark energy pulsed inside him, stronger, steadier, more obedient.

Kael looked up.

High above, Seris had not moved. Her body remained hidden, but her mind raced. He had noticed her presence… yet he hadn't exposed her. He was aware. Calculating.

Kael smiled faintly.

Yes. Let them watch. Let them think they understand.

He crouched to pick up a small stone, tossing it lightly into the clearing. It bounced softly, making a sound barely audible.

Seris's eyes narrowed. He knows I'm here.

Kael's voice floated across the empty clearing, quiet but deliberate. "You follow, yet remain unseen. Clever. But patience will be rewarded."

The shadow above froze. Seris did not respond, but her heartbeat quickened. This one… he is dangerous beyond what the Empire has prepared.

Kael continued deeper into the forest, moving deliberately toward a faint pulse of spiritual energy he had detected hours earlier.

The forest changed as he moved. The trees grew older, denser, their roots twisting into unnatural shapes. Birds and beasts avoided this region instinctively.

A faint, cold whisper echoed from within the trees.

Hunger…

Kael's eyes narrowed. The Hollow Abyss spoke to him now more clearly than ever.

Soon…

He allowed himself a small smile. "Soon, indeed."

Far above, Seris adjusted her position, keeping him within sight. She realized she had underestimated him.

The Empire thinks it controls him…

But she could feel something dark, intelligent, and patient within Kael—a mind that calculated three steps ahead of anyone in the forest, and a power that would grow beyond her comprehension if left unchecked.

The clearing ended, and a narrow path led deeper into the forest. Kael's steps were calm, measured, as he disappeared into the shadows.

Seris followed silently.

And far ahead, hidden beneath layers of earth and stone, a faint pulse of ancient abyss energy waited to be awakened.

Kael had felt its call for the first time this morning. Its presence was faint but undeniable—a remnant of a world that had existed long before the sects, the Empire, or even human civilization.

The first gate of the Hollow Abyss was opening.

And the game had truly begun.

Kael whispered to the darkness around him:

"Let them watch… let them think they control the board. Because soon, the pieces will move exactly as I desire."

The forest fell silent again, save for the faint rustle of leaves.

Above, Seris's eyes never left him, even as shadows swallowed him completely. She did not yet know that the Empire had already underestimated Kael Varyn.

And in the distance, deep in the hidden roots of the forest, the ancient abyss pulse throbbed faintly, waiting for the one who would command it.

Kael's lips curved in a quiet smile.

The first move has been made… and the Empire is already trapped in my game.
