Instead of heading to my room, I made my way downstairs. I heard Nancy and Lillian talking before I saw them.
I needed to tell Nancy about the marriage registration, but I wasn't sure if I was allowed to tell Lillian. Was it a secret, or was it okay to tell her?
When I finally got downstairs, I realized I had no reason to worry in the first place. Nancy was holding a champagne bottle while Lillian was waving at me with the biggest grin.
"Here comes Mrs Carter," Nancy said in a sing-song voice that had me cringing.
To make matters worse, Lilli joined her.
"Behold the latest addition to the Carter family."
I rushed to them and grabbed the bottle from Nancy. "I don't know what you guys heard, but this is a…"
Lillian cut me off by throwing her arms around me for a tight hug.
"Jamie explained everything to us, but there are maids around; we can't make this seem too official."
I was relieved to know that I didn't have to hide the contract from Lillian.
