"My darlings, I'm so sorry..."
She untied their ropes and saw red marks etched into both of the children's wrists.
"It's my fault. I didn't look after you properly," she said, blaming herself.
She was a little surprised to see that Crystal Davenport was stronger than she had imagined. She didn't seem scared, nor had she cried.
"I failed to protect her," Kael Davenport said.
Rosalind Lowell frowned and steadied him. "Kael, you're only a little older than Crystal. You don't have to be so grown-up."
Kael Davenport bit his lip, his eyes fixed on her.
"No, he wasn't! My brother was amazing. I was really scared at first, but he kept talking to me the whole time."
Rosalind Lowell looked at Crystal Davenport and let out a chuckle. 'Crystal is such a little chatterbox herself,' she thought. 'Kael isn't one for talking, so that must have been a trial for him.'
She saw his lips press into a tight line before he suddenly collapsed against her.
"Kael!"
