Chapter 57 - Echoes in the Light

Days passed.

Seravalle slowly returned to its rhythm.

The vineyards breathed again.

The streets filled with quiet life.

The shadows that once lingered over the town… were gone.

To everyone else—

It was over.

But not for Daniel.

He stood in the bookstore, staring at the empty space behind the counter.

Elena's space.

Nothing had been moved.

Not her books.

Not the notes she had scribbled in the margins.

Not even the cup she had left behind.

Maria leaned against the doorway, watching him.

"You haven't slept, have you?"

Daniel didn't answer.

"She wouldn't want this," Maria said gently.

That got his attention.

"She wouldn't want you to disappear too."

He exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair.

"I keep thinking…" he murmured, "what if there was another way? What if I missed something?"

Maria stepped closer.

"You didn't," she said softly.

Daniel looked down.

"She chose it."

Those words hurt more than anything.

Because they were true.

A quiet breeze drifted through the open window.

Soft.

Warm.

The pages of a nearby book flipped suddenly.

Both of them froze.

Daniel looked up.

The air shifted again—

Not strong.

But noticeable.

A faint flicker of light passed across the room.

Gone in an instant.

Maria blinked.

"Did you—"

"I saw it," Daniel said quietly.

They stood still.

Listening.

Waiting.

But nothing else happened.

Maria forced a small breath.

"Maybe it's just the wind."

Daniel didn't respond.

Because deep down—

He knew it wasn't.

Later that evening—

He found himself back at the vineyard.

At the entrance to the tunnels.

The ground had settled.

Almost as if nothing had ever happened.

But he knew better.

He stepped closer.

Kneeling near the stone.

"I'm here," he said softly.

No answer.

Just silence.

But then—

A warmth.

Faint.

Barely there.

He closed his eyes.

And for a moment—

Just a moment—

He felt it.

Not the same presence as before.

Not overwhelming.

But gentle.

Familiar.

His breath caught.

"Elena…?"

The warmth lingered.

Then slowly faded.

Daniel opened his eyes.

The world looked the same.

But something inside him had shifted.

Hope.

Small.

Fragile.

But real.

Back in town—

Maria stood at the window of the bookstore, staring at the sky.

The stars were beginning to appear.

One by one.

And for a brief second—

One of them flickered.

Brighter than the rest.

Then returned to normal.

Maria smiled faintly.

Because maybe—

Just maybe—

Elena hadn't disappeared.

Maybe she had just…

Changed.
