I woke up at the fifth alarm today, which was a personal victory considering that normally it took from seven to ten to wake me up.
Slowly, I got out of bed and picked up my phone. I saw that breakfast ended in ten minutes. Shit, I needed to hurry. I quickly put on my uniform, stuffed my bag with some books and a pen and left the room.
When I reached the cafeteria no one was there, and strangely enough, Jack was also missing. After a quick breakfast I went to our first class only to find everyone already seated and waiting for the teacher.
I knew we had an exam on the first hour, but it was surprising to see everyone so well behaved when they normally were always messing around. After searching for a seat, and yet again failing to find one away from Jack, I took the seat nearest him, which today was two seats apart, made sense, since we had an exam.
As soon as Jack saw me he lit up and proudly showed me his cheat sheet. I was actually impressed. He had managed to condense everything into a sheet as small as my finger. Yesterday the cheat sheet had been as big as my fist. He must've stayed up all night perfecting it.
" Where are you going to hide it?" I whispered, but Jack just moved his head and laughed.
At 7:59 Jack finally picked the sheet and placed it on his hand, curling it so that the note wasn't visible. That was one of the worst cheating systems I had ever seen, and I had once seen a kid just bring the sheet to the exam as if he was allowed, but the surprising thing was that almost all the other students had hidden their sheets in the same way.
I was wondering what they'd do when the teacher came when I saw thousands of colors come from their hands and suddenly there was nothing there. Right, magic existed. I had forgotten about that.
At 8:00 the teacher entered the room and started handing out papers. I waited for my turn and when he gave it to me I knew Jack and the rest of the class were pretty much fucked up.
I answered every question, handed in the exam and left the room, all the while Jack looked at me as if I had grown two heads.
I was going to love seeing his marks. I was sure they would be fairly low. Humming I went to my dorm and waited for the time to pass and the next class to begin.
Jack
I had this exam in the bag. With my sheet there was no way I was going to fail, or at least I thought that until the teacher gave us the exam.
Why should you help those in need?
Why do you think murder is wrong?
All the questions followed the same pattern and my sheet didn't have the answer. All it had were things to do or not to do, not why to do them.
While I was thinking of an answer I saw Arun give his exam to the teacher and leave. He probably knew all the answers, but we were far away enough that I couldn't see his answers, and if I used sight augmenting magic Mister Ron would catch me immediately, so I focused on my own paper.
Groaning, I gave up on trying to find the answers on the cheat sheet and was about to write what I really thought when I remembered Arun going on and on about morals or something like that, so I wrote as much as I could think of.
Why should you help those in need?
Because, morally, it's the right thing to do.
Why do you think murder is wrong?
Morally, it's wrong.
I didn't even know what morally meant, but I was sure I remembered Arun talking about it, so I answered all the questions the same way.
Meanwhile, everyone was throwing daggers at me with their eyes, as if it was my fault that the cheat sheets were useless, but it wasn't my fault, it was Mister Ron's for making the exam so gods damned difficult. Said teacher was just looking at the class while smiling smugly from the front, as if he knew he had just made our cheat sheets useless and was thoroughly enjoying it.
After writing morals on every single question I handed in my paper and went to look for Arun.
I found him in our dorm, resting on the couch.
" Yo, Arun, thanks to your yapping yesterday I was able to pass"
" Really, you remembered?" He asked while propping himself up from the couch.
" Well, yeah. I remembered everything" I lied." Just you wait, my marks will be the highest on the class"
" We'll see" Arun said, smiling, and I laid on the other couch, trying to get Arun to laugh, but he just ignored me. I was gonna prank him, and prank him bad.

I was waiting for the exam to start when a delightful fragrance entered my nose. I immediately knew who had just come in without needing to check, but I ignored it, like I had been ignoring my instincts for two days now and focused on casting a spell to hide my only chance of passing this class.
I was pretty confident I would pass until they gave me the exam, and immediately knew I was cooked.
I spent some time searching for the answers to no avail, getting slightly distracted every time that perfect fragrance entered my nose when I stopped smelling it altogether all of the sudden. The instinct to follow my nose until I found that fragrance, and the person associated with it, was strong, but I tried to ignore it and focus on the exam.
That was easier said than done. Every instinct in me was screaming at me to leave in search of that person, and every shifter knew better than to ignore their instincts and gut feelings. If we did that for too long we'd end up snapping at any given moment and making it worse, but for once I was sure my instincts were wrong, there was just no way that could be true.
Giving up on passing the class I just did the same as in the other two exams and just wrote because on every single question. At least that way I knew I would get a 1, just like in the previous exams. When it was time to hand in the exam I gave mine to a smiling professor, he definitely knew what he was doing, and left the room.

Once the teacher handed the exams I read one question and immediately looked at Jack. That bastard had given us useless sheets, but he just ignored my death glare and went back to his test.
I was going to get back at him later.
' Yes, dissect him, or better yet, mess with his hair. That vain guy would rather die than lose his source of pride'
Ignoring my inner voice I focused on the exam. This was impossible. I was going to fail, and rank low and then....
' Then we'll murder them all' The voice said, but I ignored it.
' Let me out. I know the answers' He claimed, but there was no way that was true. Once out he would just try to murder everyone and once I gave him control I wouldn't even see what was happening until either he gave it back or someone made him give it back, and from my experience it was usually the later.
Looking both at the exam and at the useless piece of paper I thought I could cheat with, I wrote whatever I could think about.
A while later I gave the teacher my paper and left the class to go to the next one, but that was when I saw our new roommate, whose name I still didn't know, walking with Jack towards our next class.
My inner voice, self proclaimed Oscar, started happily staring at him.
' He's not your plaything' I thought, but the bastard just ignored me and continued focusing on the new guy. I would have to do better at avoiding him from now on.
' Why do you like him so much?' I asked Oscar, but instead of answering he just hummed, and after a while whispered.
' Because I know something, and that something is interesting and very fun'
I knew better than to ask further questions. He would just deflect, or completely ignore me, so I just walked to our next class, ignoring the way Oscar wouldn't stop looking at him and trying to get control.
I was dying to know what he knew to act like this, he normally ignored everyone and everything, but he wouldn't answer, so I could only guess.

The next classes for the day were pretty boring, and except for the fact that the combat teacher tried to do a mortal and ended up breaking his feet and having to go to the infirmary, nothing else happened.
Unfortunately, Jack stuck to me all day, so that meant that I couldn't go search for the gem, but he was less annoying than usual, so I considered that a small victory.
After a light dinner I returned to our dorm, with Jack, of course, and was about to enter my room and proceed to ignore everything living when Jack stopped me.
" Do you wanna play poker with me and the guys? We have poker night almost every night, unless we have an exam, like today, or we don't feel like it, like the day after yesterday, then normally I just go play with my other friends, but now that you're here I could play with you." He must've seen my face because he added. " Don't answer that just yet, but do you want to play right now?" He asked, looking hopefully at me. I had already told him no yesterday, but apparently the guy had a very bad short term memory.
" No. I don't want to"
" There'll be money" That idiot had me. Money was my only weakness and apparently he had realized that.
I followed Jack into the common room, where Orus and Mark were sitting on the floor and I took the spot next to Orus, but the guy just opened his nostrils, made a face and left to get a seat opposite to me.
'I don't smell that bad', I thought. Secretly I smelled my armpit. Yeah, no. I smelled fine, that guy had a problem.
Jack sat next to me and began giving cards, then we started playing.
A few hours later I had enough money to buy food for a few months. I had won 2,000 dollars, apparently this guys either didn't care about money or had way too much.
Once I had that much money I didn't want to risk it so I said goodnight and went to bed.
Although I couldn't look for the gem today I had made a lot of money, which was now hidden inside my Cheetos bag, alongside with today's panties, which I would have to clean soon. I would have to ask Jack to teach me that cleaning spell. So overall I considered today a good and productive day.
' I wished tomorrow was just like today' I thought and drifted off to sleep.
